Root Should i Root??

i know the perks of rooting and i know that it isnt very hard now but im just debating on to really do it or not. I know i wont brick my phone im a very geeky tech type of guy modded tons of 360's but i just dont know should i just wait for the OTA when it finally decide to rear its ugly head? or just just to the cynogen 5.05 rom which is looking pretty amazing?

i also know its about preference but i have no preference lol

I dont think there is anything that the OTA can offer that current roms cannot but there is much that current roms offer that the OTA cannot. In other words I would say since you arent scared of bricking root.

If you enjoy tinkering and pushing past normal limits jump right in. There are real world advantages (tethering, faster performance) and frankly, it is just good old fun seeing the daily innovations in the new ROMs.

Is there anything you want to do that requires root (ie wifi tether)? Then Yes.
Are you just looking for someone to validate your decision to root? Then Yes.

If not, then no.

well and the other problem i have is i cant find a good detailed guide i have looked and cannot find one for the CM and i want to root just really need to find a good guide that explains in detail how to do it. Im planing on doing it today like right now if at all possible lol im at the library and have nothing else to do lol funny im at school and cant get anywork done thanks DRoiD!!!!

There are a number of good guides, but what convinced me were some of the Droid Life video guides, particularly the one on installing Koush's Cyanogen....their guides are fairly simplistic and won't help you out if you run into problems, but they give a quick & dirty look at how simple it is....that and the continued 2.1 delays convinced me to root a couple of weeks ago....

Just installed Koush's 5.05 and rockin' the 24K Metamorph theme and my Droid is fantastic....

there are a number of sites with great guys and gals (Phandroid included) that are quick to help out....my only previous experience was installing leaked and custom OS's on my Blackberry Storm, so I am a bigtime noob....

i think im just going to wait until the 2.1 OTA comes out and then root my droid and that way i wont have to worry about and update for awhile

The 2.1 update won't add anything drastic that any ROM doesn't. If there is something, somebody will incorporate it into their ROM. However, ROMs offer so many things that stock will not. Tethering built in, apps2sd (Cyanogen ROM), overclocking. Honestly, just the overclocking is worth it for me.

If you are able to root, and want any of the features that come with it, then I say just do it. The 2.1 update doesn't even cross my mind.

If you just want to overclock you don't need a custom ROM. Of course, custom ROMs are fun and amazing, but if its just overclocking that you're after you can install custom OC kernels on the stock Droid ROM

What recovery are you using? You can only use ROM manager with Koush's clockwork recovery, and only use nandroid on SPRecovery. I havent used Rom manager but i think it can all be done within the app. With SPRecovery you want to place the nandroid in a folder called "nandroid" on your SDcard.
Go to backup/restore, advanced backup, and create a backup of everything. Then Wipe data at least twice, and restore the Cyanogen nandroid and Reboot

One thing you should realize is that Cyanogenmod is different from all of the other custom ROMs. The only way they're really the same is that you need root to use both of them. Cyanogenmod can only be used with ClockworkMod Recovery and the other ROMs all use SPRecovery. They are not interchangeable, though you can switch between all of the non-Cyanogen ROMs as often as you'd like by just flashing a new Nandroid.

You're welcome. Is the nextheme just an update.zip? If so you just boot into recovery go to install>allow update.zip>update.zip (depreciated) and then reboot and you're set. Again, I would make a backup in case something goes wrong or you don't like the theme
