Preloaded ringtones/wallpapers/verizon animation boot screen/Verizon only apps... stuff like that?

Yeah, that would take up a part of it.

My calculation is that the 8GB chip shows up as around 7.8GB's. From there, the OS should take up around 300MB (HTC's with 512MB flash chips have around 200MB free for apps and such), so then theres around 7.5GB's. So...whats on the last 900MB or so, that only 6.6GB's are showing up? And if the OS is on a separate flash memory chip (why they'd bother to throw in another 512MB chip I wouldn't understand), then theres 1.2GB or so unaccounted for, which is VERY odd.

Well, it'd still only come out to about 7.8GB's and 0.9765GB's, so theres gotta be something on there. My guess is the OS, at least, is on the flash. Maybe it comes with a free movie or something too? lol. Since the OS shouldn't be taking up more than 300 or so MB's...

lol not to be harsh or anything but did you read my post??

Just like a hard drive or something. Straight out of the box, go out there and find me one that will give you the exact amount of space they say. Completely wiped out hard drives with nothing on it are still not their exact 320gb or w/e. I'll be honest, i don't know the exact reasoning behind this and never really cared to learn about it but for all the years i've been building computers. I've yet to receive a hard drive that i bought which is stated to be 500gb actually come with 500gb. It's always like 480-490gb or something.

Same seems to go for phones, PMP's, etc...My iPod touch which is 8gb (got the first gen the day it was released) did not come with 8gb of storage for me to use. Of course there is the OS and stuff already pre-installed but it came in at around 7.6gb with the OS and default apps. Though this argument isn't as good as the PC Hard drives, it still kind of makes sense.

The test device could have a number of things we can't account for, maybe the person put some songs on it? so it came out to 6.6gb. Either way, im just gonna say. It's like a PC Hard drive and you won't get the full 8gb stated, you will get less even if it is completely wiped out and i have no clue why, it just is, i just never thought much about it all the years i've been building computers and frankly, i still don't really care.

I know, which is why I started at 7.8GB's instead of 8. Even so, unless only one guy is leaking specs (there seem to be at least 2 or 3 different reports of the 6.6GB storage), its a weird number.

I'm pretty sure it's because manufacturers measure gigabytes as 1,000mb when it's actually 1,024mb to a computer. And then they measure each mb as 1000kb when they are actually 1024 each. All of this adds up. If this is correct than it's honestly false advertising since they are using an incorrect measurement.
