Help New GS3 owner living in a Apple world.

Hey everyone! This is my first post on this forum so I hope you'll all be kind.
I recently saw the GS3 at my local Bestbuy and fell in love!
They were out of the white one so I ordered one with my carrier and anticipate delivery this Friday.

I've had every iteration of the iPhone and pretty much own all apple products. I quite enjoy living in the apple ecosystem however, I had become somewhat disenchanted/bored with my iPhone over the last year.

So I need some help with the transition. Their are a few features that I use constantly that I feel I'm going to sorely miss.

AirPlay -
Stream seamlessly to my apple tv videos/pictures of my kids for the family to enjoy.

iMessage -
All my close friends/family or on iOS, so now I have to pay for MMS when sending videos and pics.

System wide Intergraded dictionary -
I'm a terrible speller and English is not my first language so it's nice to quickly tap on a word to make sure it's properly spelled or verify its meaning.

Shortcuts for keyboard-
I use this feature very often given I use several email add or use the same messages when replying to emails. I just type 'ggg' and in pops my gmail add 'yyy' my Yahoo acc and so forth.

Remote app for my Apple TVs-
I use this app to control my 3 apple TVs & iMac on a regular basis.

Given my ignorance of Android (to be remedied) I'm not sure if those comparable features/apps are available for the GS3.

Having played with the GS3 for about 15 min, I have the feeling that I'm going to enjoy the challenge. I just need a little help to handle the transition.

if anyone can suggest alternatives to the features mentioned above or an article/post about folks living in an apple world with an Android device, it would be greatly appreciated.

DoubleTwist implements Apples AirPlay for music. Not sure about other media.

I'm surprised it isn't implemented by more apps.

It will also keep your library on your pc synced to your android via wifi which I don't think idevices do yet so your only wireless sync solution with idevices is apples cloud which is not very mature yet.

For free texting I use Google Voice. Probably the best service (IMHO) Google has. For pic sharing I use Google Drive. It works seamlessly between my iDevices and all my family.

Also I have Sony TV's (wireless capable tv's) that I can control with the Sony app. I have the DISH App that I can control my DVR from anywhere (record and see schedule). You can also watch your recorded shows anywhere with the Slingbox App if you have sling box. I control my Roku with the Roku Android App. Supposedly I can even stream from my current Droid Charge to my Sony TV, but I haven't tried it yet. I have not found anything yet that I cannot do with Android that I want to do on my iPhones. I am anxiously awaiting my S3!

Also, I just typed "keyboards with shortcuts" in GPlay and got a number of keyboards. Maybe one of them has what you want?

And yes, you can swap keyboards and make them your primary keyboard fairly easily. You just have to go into Settings > Input/language and enable them first. Then you can switch it the next time the keyboard is active by selecting the icon on the notification bar. It will keep that keyboard active until you change it. Also, Android will pop up with a security message when you enable the keyboard. It just tells you that third party keyboards could be keylogging your passwords. So, only get major name keyboards with a good review history.

I just got the phone this morning and it’s a beauty! However, I’m having major issues tho… I can’t connect to my Airport Extreme or tether my iPad. I’ve done some research on line and can’t find any solution to fixing these issues.

All the article that I’m finding are over a year old and don’t seem to relate with Lion.


I had no idea how segregated these two ecosystems were… quite frustrating to be stuck in the middle of bad divorce.

I know I’m asking a lot of help here… I’m a little desperate, can someone guide me on how to resolve these issues?

On my Airport Extreme I have one locked down and the other a guest network. I can see both from any device i've used, to include Roku and wireless televisions.

Turn off your wi-fi on your phone and activate your hotspot feature in your settings after setting it up (again, I assume you have it on your account). Now it is all up to your iPad. In the settings does it see your new network created by your GS3? Just connect and use the password you entered for the hotspot functionality.

I absolutely see my Airport extreme, it even tries to connect but when it does I get an "authentication error occurred"message.

When it comes to the iPad tethering, it also connects to S3 (or at least appears to) however nothing works. I managed to get a few emails push through with no content.

Is tethering allowed by your provider? If not, this would explain why you can connect to the S3 but not use the internet. Some providers make it easy, and others difficult, charging you a premium for the facility. If your provider doesn't allow tethering on your current contract, then as someone suggested, try the Fox-Fi app as it is supposed to be able to provide free tethering.

If (when) you decide to root you'll be able to tether easily. My carrier forces me to pay unless rooted. BTW, rooting will be easy and very low risk pretty shortly, I'm waiting for someone to post a 1-click method. I'll be surprised if it doesn't come out this weekend!

You can use Whatsapp for instant messaging, uses data not sms. Google talk also works for instant messaging across platforms.

As far as "segregated ecosystems" I can assure you it's not Android driving the segregation. Most Android apps will work across platforms, it's the Apple proprietary stuff that doesn't port well. It's my biggest beef with Apple- my wife's an iphone user, it's a great device but it doesn't play well with others. Sorry for the digression, I don't mean to make this a bash Apple thread.

I have tried a lot of apps and found that for getting files to and from your new Galaxy S3 wirelessly with Mac computers it is hard to beat WiFi Transfer Pro. Easy interface and reliability. Easier than syncing an iPod with iTunes. Then for streaming to your Airport Express I find Twonky exceptionally good. It's slightly buggy in that sometimes it drops the connection and you can't change the volume with the Galaxy's side control but if you connect and leave it alone it performs quite well. I value simplicity and these two apps deliver. Once you learn the ropes you will have no problem visiting the Apple universe.
