First off, this is unofficial and unless the admins say otherwise the 'new' user rankings will NOT get updated.

Now with that out of the way, on with the actual issue -

History:
Some weeks ago, the admins felt it to be a good idea to change the user rankings from the defaults of senior, junior, .. etc. Personally, I like the idea and I hope a lot of you feel the same. What happened is that the new rankings were disappointing. A few discussions (here and here) later, now the admins have agreed to change the 'rank names'.

I proposed a vote and the idea interested the admins. To quote,
We might just do something like.. the names of the official builds, or just go back to default and be done with it, I dunno.. but perhaps a vote would be fun!

Now rather than wait around, why not just start a vote? The first step is to have some candidates and here is my lot (shamelessly copied from tomshardware.com)

  1. Newbie
  2. Scout
  3. Regular
  4. Addict
  5. Veteran
  6. Resident
  7. Master

I'm thinking of collecting suggestions over a few days and then putting them for a vote. So, post your ideas for rank-names below !!

Trying to be helpful,
chronodekar

PS - suggestions are; Of course, welcome!

How about something like this...
...
ps. this is a joke

:) It gave me a good smile !! (was stunned for a minute though... )

@Caddyman,

Sure , then the list would look like,

  1. Newbie
  2. Scout
  3. Regular
  4. Addict
  5. Resident
  6. Veteran
  7. Master
@IOWA,
I'm not one to say no, but we need (I think) 7 titles and we have only 5 android releases so far... So, if you could fill in the other 2, I think we'll have another candidate list for voting.

We're still open for more suggestions !! (and hopefully, we can start the voting by hmm... 27th or 28th perhaps ?)

Why don't we just add Applesauce and Butterscotch?
So: Applesauce, Butterscotch, Cupcake, Donut, Eclair, Froyo, and Gingerbread.

You are making me hungry.

Do you guys think that if the titles are android release names, it would be too obscure to people who were new to android or more enticing and encourage them to learn more?

Are you guys (men) secure enough to have a title like "Cupcake"? If so, I just have to hope that they don't come out with a released named "Hairy Legs."

Hairy Legs isn't a dessert, so I think we're safe. The worse I can imagine would be... "Honey," "Icecream," and "Jam."

I'd be interested in knowing just how many people actually care what the ranks say.

My input: the ranks are not necessary. Post count is there in the small user profile to the left, as is the join date. Those two things, as well as the "premium" designation banner, don't need to be quantified further by an artificial, redundant "rank" in the same area, the data speaks for itself.

I'm (mildly) against this whole ranking schema. I say mildly because I know it's fun to do such things, also it is quite wide-spread; nearly every forum is doing it, this one might as well follow the trend (holding back from inserting eye-rolling smiley here).. ... aarrrrggghhh.. :D

the user titles should be used to encourage posting, as in, the 0-xxx posters have a intro rank name, as they post more, you get a "cooler" or nicer rank in your name.

example, on my DE site we have this for user titles

title - minimum posts
visitor - 0
moving in - 21
getting settled - 51
citizen - 151
here to stay - 301
TD Fanatic - 601

post counts should not be important, but they should be shown, when im new on a forum and ask a question and get 5 answers, i will look at post counts to see who has more and take their advice first.....USUALLY more post = more experience....USUALLY (but not always).
