LCD turns off during calls

I do indeed understand that if I check the box for "turn on proximity sensor", ( in the call settings),that when I bring the phone up to my ear, the LCD will turn off. The intended purpose sounds good as if you can imagine if you were on a long call, there would be no reason to be wasting the battery by having the LCD on. BUT...I do not want the LCD to turn off so I unclicked the box. Here's the problem. If I "unclick" the box ( therefore not having the LCD turn off), it "still" turns off ANNNNNND it doesnt come back on when I bring the phone back to a horizontal position. I have to push the on/off button to get the screen back on and at that point I'm not in my phone mode. Anyone else have this issue???.
My solution to that problem was to put the proximity sensor back on to avoid that problem, but I really don't want it on

I have the problem however I want the proximity sensor to function like any other phone, where the screen turns off, when something is in "close proximity" to the screen. Mine turns off, and stays off, until I press the power button.

Sorry for resurrecting an old thread here but on my phone as long as I don't have it set to speaker mode when I move the phone away from my ear the screen comes back to life, no need to press the power button or anything..
