Offline Voice Search?

So I am not understanding how to use offline voice actions. Seems like every time I try, it tells me it can't reach google.

I've tried the voice search bar up at top. I've tried the voice command button in swiftkey. but they all try to go online.

In my setup, I have google voice typing and swiftkey 3 checked off (swifkey 3 that I have is pro version but not HD)
Under voice search it shows english (us) 22 mb installed.

So what else do I need to do to enable it?

Seeing as how I have not received my Nexus 7 yet, my only experience is on my dad's GNex with a 4.1.1 ROM. I think you enable the offline voice typing by opening up the Google Search app (or by going into Google Now), finding the menu button, and going into settings. If I remember correctly, there should be a box for you to check/enable for offline speech recognition. Hope that helps.

Try going into Settings > Language & Input > Voice Search > Download offline speech recognition.

See it that works for you to use it offline.

I have all that enabled. By default english is downloaded for offline.
I did notice that swiftkey was a problem with dictation. Their keyboard voice dictation still goes online. When I switched to jelly bean stocked keyboard, it allowed offline dictation.

Maybe my interpretation of what the N7 can do in terms of offline voice is wrong? I always assumed that it can do regular voice actions offline. But so far its always telling me it can't go online.

I'll add another voice here for the offline voice stuff not working and other items not working like they maybe should.

I've noticed that voice dictations get slower as my connection gets slower. Something that shouldn't be happening if it is all on the device. I've seen this on both my N7 and GNex. I've also got the message about not being able to connect to Google with voice dictations. Seemed odd.

I'm assuming voice actions still require a connection though as those tend to not go through unless I'm connected. Also, I've tried sending texts with voice commands and they no longer actually send. I can get it to work one up but I never see it pop into my GVoice queue like a regular message would.

Hmmm this is very strange. I will do some research today - I will test on my Nexus as well and see what happens.

Check back later for some results!

The only voice ability I have been able to do offline is voice dictation with the stock keyboard. Swiftkey does not do offline dictation. maybe the update does.

Voice commands I have not been able to do offline. Perhaps there is a different icon that we have to launch because the one at the top of each page certainly doesn't do it even with everything set as mentioned earlier.

I have a Samsung Galaxy S3 with Jelly Bean 4.1 installed and did have the same problem. I purchased the S3 in the UK where I live. The language setting was set to English (US), and the 'Download offline speech recognition' under the 'INSTALLED' section was also showed 'English (US)' 22MB.

I press the 'ALL' tab and then selected 'English (UK)' 15GB, which then started to download.

My S3 now shows both "English (US)' 22MB and 'English (UK)' 15MB.

I have retested my S3 in Flight Mode (which had no Internet access) and it works fine now.

I hope this helps.

By the way, the default 'Download offline speech recognition' cannot be uninstalled, but you can uninstall other languages under the 'ALL' tab that you have selected.

Hi,

Quite late as just got my jelly bean but hope it still helps:

settings > language and keyboard >google voice typing settings > choose input languages > English (US).

It's defaulted to automatic so you'll want to change it to English (US)

I have all those settings even as far back as when I originally posted this.
But none of that changes the fact that when you have no data connection and you go to Google Now and say "Google", it will return "can't reach google at the moment retry"

After many many searches online of people having the same issue I don't think this is doable. Unless one of you have been able to put your device on airplane mode and still issue voice commands. Not voice dictation but voice commands.

when you say "it works fine now", are you doing searches by voice? What voice commands are you giving it?

I have tried (not just my N7 but also my galaxy nexus) and it will always say "can't reach google...". I have tried downloading UK english even french and chinese along with my u.s. english and google now would never give me any kind of ability to issue voice commands.

you have to realize that Google now and Google search are online functions, voice recognition for those will only work if you are online since there is no ability to search if you are not online. If you are using another application that allows entering text you can use the keyboard speech recognition button to speak text if you are offline. Be sure that you have use them online before you go offline to use them, it seems like it may cache the voice recognition dictionary.
