Good day,

I would like to use Apps2SD for my fresh-cdma-hero-2.0b2 install. It is not included from what I read in the image as the owner did not get time to test it before going on vacation. Can anyone confirm if they have gotten it to work and explain how? I have copies of my SD card and have already partitioned it to 1GB ext and 15 GB fat32. I just need help installing the app and scripting it so it moves/sees data on the SD card (assuming it even works on this rom...)

Thanks!!!

Could you expand on that a bit I haven't found any real negative info on it.

Don't ever take your SD card out while your phone is on. Or turn your phone on while the SD card is out.

exactly... taking the card out while powered up or powering on the phone with the card out can result in a phone that is useless.. also what happens if the SD card fails? don't say that won't happen because it does happen.. if the apps that are on the SD card sudden no longer work, you can end up with a phone that is in a constant force close state. correcting it might be as simple as putting the SD card back in a rebooting.. but there have been some that required a RUU to get a working phone again.

You could always make a shadow sdcard. You know, take it out of the turned off phone, put in an empty, partition another while in recovery. Turn off the phone, use a computer to copy from one to the other.. Now you could either copy the ext partition contents or not. If you don't you should backup market, so you can use it to reload your apps.
While you're at this you could even choose to omit the ext partition. If you omitted it you could then restore your apps from a backup or from market.
Well the risk does seem to be that one has to think about what the phone is doing with the sd memory ( system/sd/...)
So I have some slow 4gig sd as a backup and the origin sdcard as a non-app2sd sd. A class 6, 8 gig for everyday.
The real risk is in moving "android system" apk's into the sdcard. That's a rush!!

and how are you going to copy from on SD to another in your computer when the apps are residing in a partition that is not native readable by Windows?

remember, most people aren't going to be running Linux (although they should)

Good point.
Those people should use a back up program, like titanium. They could always just backup market. Apk.
Like I said it requires thought.

of course it requires thought... and while apps2sd is a great idea.. it also requires each person to weigh in on how much effort they want to put into providing a failsafe. even then, I'm not even sure that the sym links would be backed up correctly or even recoverable. If it does work, what happens when the SD card fails, and you aren't near the backup card? these are all things that each person needs to evaluate before jumping in with both feet and not knowing that they could have a paper weight if something goes wrong.

I don't know simply because I don't want to run apps2sd and didn't want to test it out. maybe you'd like to give it a shot... pull your card while powered up.. or power up with no card present... then place a backup card in and see if it comes back..

like I said, there have been a couple that had to RUU to get back to a working phone after pulling the SD card... apps2sd works great...until it doesn't...then its an epic fail. me personally, I don't see a need to have 70+ apps installed... if I like it and use it.. then it stays.. if I don't like it or don't use it.. then it goes.. I currently have used 64mb of my 159 internal memory... no where close to running out of space for apps yet..

How about powering up with the backup card in place?
That I've done. The symlinks to the apps launcher had to be recreated by an install. It took about 15 min to recreate the links in the apps2sd partition (/system/sd/... ) So the issue is not one of security of the media. It's one of being cognizant of the possibilities.
But in fairness to those who don't have the back ground or want a simple device, don't use apps2sd. It's not enough of a reason unless you use the hero to do work which require a suite of apps. IMHO

WOW!!! Thanks for all the information. I was under the impression only "apps" got moved to the card not system files and therefore it would not cause the phone to crash hard. I'm in IT so cloning cardss is not a big deal nor is linux but another device to manage and backup such as this seems like a lot of work for little benefit. Thank you all for the great information its extremely helpful and you all raise great points. I think I may have to pass on this one though as the time backing up and making sure not to make a mistake really donesnt seem worth it. I do have appmanager and titanium backup both backing up my apps. not sure which one is better but running both as fail safes at the moment.
