No root, Tethering and Chrome OS?

I have not looked at Chrome OS yet so I am looking for some feedback on how to tether with it.

Using a non-rooted Droid, is it possible to tether with Chrome OS?

I know there are ways to tether your non-rooted Droid with Linux/Windows/Mac, but the software required will not run under Chrome OS (for example, one of the Linux solutions requires you have the SDK installed).

Chrome OS is Linux. If you find instructions for any Linux distro you should be able to use them under Chrome with little to no modifications; you just might need to get the necessary dependencies if Chrome OS doesn't have a package manager, which it probably doesn't.

Can you install the Android SDK in Chrome OS?

All of the videos I have seen make it look like a very basic browser. I haven't seen any terminal in Chrome OS (which you could use to un-tar and edit the SDK).

I don't think there's enough access to the back end of Chrome to get wired tethering to work. You'd probably be able to get wifi tethering to work, but you need root for that at the moment. One other problem is the current Chrome Os preview is built on top of Ubuntu, which I think they aren't going to use once it's out of pre Alpha.

I don't know anything about Chrome OS but the Android SDK should be possible to install. You might have to hunt around for dependencies though.

Per this list, you should be able to drop a terminal in Chrome OS by pressing Ctrl+Alt+T.

EDIT: Of course... installing so many dependencies is probably more of a hassle than downloading one update.zip and gaining root for your Droid so you can project a WiFi Hotspot. Are you sure that's not an option? The process of simply rooting (without installing Busybox, flash_image, a custom ROM, etc.) takes all of 2 minutes. You download the 10MB update.zip on your phone and reboot into recovery and press Apply update.zip

I am actually asking this question for someone else. I was trying to find a non-root solution, but seeing as it is not clear that there is one, they might root if they absolutely need this feature.

Look into using Proxoid, perhaps. I think we have a how-to somewhere on this site and it works on Linux (Chrome OS is probably included).
