Spilled coffee on my Droid...

So today I got out of the car holding my phone and a cup of coffee in one had and tilted my had just enough to get a few drops onto the phone. But not just onto the outside it went into the slider mechanism after cleaning it as best as I could the phone's slider gets stuck constantly and isn't smooth anymore.

I'm debating taking the phone apart to clean in the slider mechanism. Anybody do this? I'm kinda nervous because if I break it I'm f*****.

Any ideas?

This made me laugh so it lightens my mood a little lol.. ugh. I think i might have to go out on a limb and take it part. Maybe. If I do I'll try to post a walkthrough

I read somewhere that you can drop it into a pot of dry rice and it will dry, clean, and root the phone for you. Afterwards, the rice can be steamed and layered over shrimp or served with a side of calamari and maybe some pineapple.

What about some rubbing alcohol? Doesn't it evaporate after a little while? Or possibly air in a can like I use for cleaning my electronics. With the rubbing alcohol maybe you could pour a very very very small amount into the rails for the slider and move it back and forth.

Rubbing alcohol should work well; we rub it all over CPUs to clean off thermal grease all the time, and it's not conductive and evaporates quickly so it shouldn't short anything in the device even if it gets in there. The problem with the coffee is that it might cause shorts somewhere in your phone, but the slider mechanism doesn't really lead anywhere besides with some ribbon cables for the screen, so it shouldn't be TOO bad. If you can deal with the slider being sticky, just deal with it.

When I was like 7, my friend had a Game Boy Advance and his mom spilled coffee on it. It continued working perfectly but the L button was just sticky.

I tried rubbing alcohol actually but it didn't really help. The coffee got so far down there and then it evaporated and left sugar behind.

1 thing I have learned from this is I need to start drinking black coffee. Maybe then this wouldn't have happened.

Stay AWAY from solvents such as benzene, gasoline, or xylene.
Organic solvents should only be used in a proper ventilated environment and with an organics respirator, gloves, and proper waste disposal.
Go for the 90% isopropyl alcohol after rinsing with distilled water. You can find 99% isoproply alcohol at chemical supply stores for even purer work.



The best way to drive water out of a PCB or computer is to use “potentiometer cleaner.” You can still get this stuff at Radio Shack or any other place you can buy TV repair parts. It is a pressurized can of liquid solvent that is sprayed through a little tube (like a Dust-Off can) that’s intended to be sprayed into dirty potentiometers to drive out the dirt. It evaporates cleanly and has no effect on the plastics used in circuits or electronic components.
