Skype/VoIP on Android

Here is what I would like to do:

I have an HTC Magic and I have a couple of contacts who I frequently talk with on skype. Is there anyway to talk with them skype-to-skype on the Android phone?

The Skype Lite app does not allow calling.

I don't mind either calling using my local minutes OR using my data plan.

Are there any other applications that could assist me with this?

Thanks!

I use Sipdroid directly connected to Gizmo5 and I am in Vietnam calling the usa for 2 cents a minute. Get the full version at sipdroid.org so you can use it over 3g/edge as well as wifi. Works for me...

People at Skype are crap! In fact they are in court and may lose their ripoff program. Did you know that they are using your computer to pass others peoples calls through it? Gee they don't seems to tell you that...

Short answer: you can't.
There is no properly functioning Skype app out there yet for Android.
I suggest emailing Skype as I have done requesting they get on this and port the same one that is already available for the iPhone. The more people that complain/suggest, the quicker they'll get one released.

I actually cant believe this. I have an android phone on the way, & voip was one of the main reasons of "upgrading". I didnt even bother to research as to whether it was possible on android cuz i just thought it was a given! And no, i dont want google voice before anyone asks. I want my skype, with my skype contacts, for free. If it isn't resolved in the very near future it's gonna mean i'm gonna have to get a different phone altogether and leave android having only just joined :(

I couldnt find an email address, do you have one?

I can't believe this either..... I read something earlier on about this and have found this forum which confirmed it. I've just cancelled my HTC hero order as it really was one of the things that I needed and just assumed would be on there :(. I guess I have to get an iphone now :(

Is there no work around anywhere?

apparantly there's an app called sipdroid which is proper voip, and i think skype contacts-useable. I'll give it a go when my phone comes and let u know if it works!

Apparently iSkoot have an app out for the Android but I can't find it in the UK market. They provide a Skype app for all other platforms (Symbian, etc.).

How does Skype work on a phone (like the iPhone) that can't multi-task anyway? Can you still receive Skype calls if you've got another app launched? Like a game?

You can on SymbianOS, and you would be able to on Android.

As far as i know iskoot isnt proper voip - it allows u to do it over ur networks 3g, but eats up your normal phone minutes - so it's not really free, just the price of a local call no matter where you call..
