1.5 users, a little morale boost for you: an old review

My favorite part:

"The Droid Eris by HTC runs on version 1.5 of the Android Operating System... [it] supposedly might get a jump to version 2.0 sometime next month."

That's from November. Ha ha.

Yep. I got my phone on Nov. 27th. I remember the date I was eligible because it was black friday. When I got the phone the sales person told me it would be upgraded on Dec. 11th
That would have been nice.

Thanks for that, Frisco. I was right there with you, holding onto 1.5...not jumping on the first leaks (or the leaks that followed), using restraint when the rooted ROM was discovered, being patient when Bob's-uncle's-friend-who-worked-at-a-VZW-store-last-year said that the OTA was imminent, not salivating over the latest apps that were 1.6+ only...

...until yesterday, when a bout of spontaneity came over me and I rooted to the latest 2.1 ROM. I'm enjoying it, but honestly, if I never got an update, I would still love this phone. I was at my local Verizon store on launch day, and I went in thinking I was getting a Droid. After spending a few minutes with the Eris, I was sold. It was exactly what I needed, nothing I didn't, and I saved $100 (being young and newly married, $100 is a fortune) by not going with the phone backed by an ad campaign. There's not much that feels better than being completely happy with the decision you made.

Congratulations. I agree wholeheartedly with that sentiment.

On another note, and related to my reasons for posting this thread, I'm wondering how many here honestly purchased their Eris with a future upgrade in mind, and how many of them discussed the upgrade at the time of purchase.

I went into the Verizon store, after fooling around with the Palm Pre and a few other non-Android devices in a Best Buy here in town, to try out the Droid and the Eris.

The Droid was out of the running after only a few minutes of coming to the conclusion that it was mechanically just a big mess (I think the Palm Pre feel was better as far as the keyboard went, and it too seemed toy-like to me).

So, I played with the Eris and that was that; no mention or thought of any upgrade to the software.. it was fine as-is, and still is.

+1
Though I knew that the upgrade was promised, it was merely icing on the cake.

Very interesting thought and one that brings me back to November 3rd. I spent a lot of time with these 2 devices, the Moto and Eris, and eventually wound up with the lighter, sleeker Erii. But the sales rep, who btw had a Droid, said a big diff was that the Moto had a more powerful processor. He also said the Eris would be getting an OS upgrade but that didn't mean much to me at the time. I, therefore, cannot claim "future upgrade in mind" as a reason for purchase. However, there is no way I would ever go back to 1.5 after tooling around with 2.1. Had I known then what I know now, it would certainly have played a part.

Edit: the rep also showed me his Droid with the slid out keyboard. I said, "wow that's cool" and he said, "I never use it." Moto out of the running at that point.

Thanks for reaffirming my decision. I am an over 60 woman who upgraded from a basic phone. OK, it did have a camera. After reading reviews and reading a lot of posts from here, I got the Eris. Price, size, feel -- they were all considerations. I don't need turn by turn directions as I have a GPS in the car. I wanted to read e-mail and facebook on the road (a grandma has to keep up with the grandkids), play solitaire while waiting at the doctor's office, tentatively venture into texting, and even do a little geocaching. I got what I bargained for. I am extremely happy with 1.5, and maybe by the time I am fully conversant with the features I already have, I'll want more. But I am not ready to start messing with a good thing.

Most of these reviewers didn't use the phone for more than a couple days. I'm sure they didn't use it long enough to see all the little things that give us all headaches on a daily basis. The Eris is a good phone, but most of the reviews of it when it came out made it sound better than it is.

I obviously disagree with that assessment of the Eris. "..give us ALL headaches on a daily basis."

If that were the case it'd be a resounding failure of a cell phone. Nobody would have kept it for long at all, and it would not have been successful sales-wise no matter the promotions. Mixed reviews are one thing, but implying that all users are having problems with the Eris is gross exaggeration, to say the least.

If it's so bad, why do you have one? Why did you stick with it and wait for an update? Why did you not just return it?

It's a fine phone, although as I've posted before I do wonder about quality control at the factories given some of the persistent complaints across 1.5 and 2.1 having to do with sound, etc.

I've had mine since January and I'd write pretty much the same review that I posted the link to here; that's why I posted the link.

I'm not a fanboy for anything, but I think the Eris is in fact a great little smartphone.
