Evo 4G LTE or Galaxy S3

I Ordered a Galaxy S3 for Sprint, but received a Evo 4 LTE. After having the HTC for a week and finally getting the S3, I am very disappointed with the S3. The UI is absolutely horrible, and the shutter sound is IMPOSSIBLE to turn off with the Sprint version.
If the Evo had 2 Gigs of Ram like the S3, i would readily keep it in place of the S3.
I have until 8/16 to decide which to keep.
The only thing keeping me from returning the S3 right now is that i feel like it is more future proof than the Evo.
But in all honesty if the Evo were to be able to get Jelly Bean this year, and maintain the smooth UI it now has WITHOUT rooting, That would be enough.

Any advice?

The 2gb of ram isn't required to run jb smoothly.
The evo is only going to get faster with sense 4.1 and 4.0.4

Other than that I'm biased for the evo.

Although it looks like your leaning on the s3 considering you posted this here :p
I posted it in the S3 and EVo forums.
Just trying to get the best info from both sides.

Yes, i didnt figure it was required, considering the Nexus phones have 1g.

But as a past apple owner, I know that just because a phone can be updated to the latest version does not mean it can run it smoothly.

And i have also read that HTC has a bad track record for updating their CDMA products.

I just don't want to be stuck with a device that is already blocked from future updates right at the beginning of my two-year contract.

well... i personally own both phones. galaxy s3 on verizon, and htc evo 4g lte on sprint of course. ive only had the evo for a couple days and ive had the samsung for over a week now. ive watched many review and comparison videos prior to buying them, and i saw positives in both

pros and cons for each as follows:
evo pros
-build quality. used actual metal in structure.
-kickstand comes in handy for my use.
-some of the widgets stock on sense.
-swype comes stock
-folders are easy plus folders available on the bottom (i forget appropriate term)
-sims free play available on this phone (yeah i know im a loser)
-beats audio (i havent used it yet but i know its nice)

evo cons
-no removable battery
-slightly smaller screen (not noticable to be honest)
-not a fan of the white background in the messages and contacts app for example
-battery life not as strong
-no menu button (comes up as 3 dots on display screen and uses valuable space)
-charger port on side. i prefer on top or bottom

galaxy s 3 pros
-charger port on bottom
-LED screen display is AMAZING
-stock internet browser is great. actually prefer over using chrome
-i like a lot more stock widgets on here such as the calendar, assistive lighting, alarm clock.
-home screens roll unlimited. evo stops at each end
-soft buttons at bottom are more user friendly and i actually like the center hard buttom
-removable/replaceable battery
-GREAT battery life. i havent killed this battery in one day yet
-better front face camera quality
-customizing of different text choices
-comes with headphones
-2gb of memory!

galaxy s 3 cons
-plastic structure. decent build but not great, could be better
-stock keyboard seems to be a knockoff of swype. i personally dont like it and i also dont like adding swype beta if phone didnt include it stock
-doesnt currently support sims free play (again, yes im a loser)

PROS FOR BOTH
-cameras are great. very fast and clean picture
-screen sizes may seem oversized but they fit great in my hand (and my hands are not large)
-battery life is good on both, just better on samsung
-android software is up to date and runs very smooth
-screen shots available stock on both without rooting

bottom line, both are great but using both regularly i really like the samsung better, even tho it is plastic and not as well built. i obviously dont have much complaints about it. ive even considered selling the evo and replacing with the samsung on sprint and using samsung on both lines

sorry for the lengthy reply but i figured it would help to cover as much detail as possible

Good write up

In the evos defense, rooting removes the menu bar and it's already been fixed on the one x, we will get the update that removes it soon enough.

Infinite home scroll as well and landscape are standard root options as well. :p I do understand not everyone wants to root but this is android and you are on an Android forum after all :)

You really can't go wrong with either

yeah i dont care to do rooting, ive owned androids since the original verizon motorola droid 1 and ive never rooted. good to know that an upcoming update will fix that issue.

and glad i was able to give some strong insight

I simply got fed up with HTC and their quality control. People keep lauding their build quality but the og evo had the most fragile screen ever with screen separation and light leaking, the 3d had even worse light leak and from the looks of things a lot of the ltevos have issue too with the build or.fit and finish.

Plus the new sense is the worst ever imo. Didn't make any sense whatsoever to me with that stupid menu button and on screen recent apps. Combine all that with the reported lag and multi tasking issues and I just wasn't interested.

Despite the fact that Samsung still has pretty weak talk/web radios. It has the neat motion enhancements, amoled and I think touchwhiz has surpassed sense in terms of user friendliness.

I loved my evo, didnt care much for sense, but CM7 was wonderful on it. just need to know some pros and cons, maybe someone can point outs some serious flaws or great capabilites for me. I'm deciding today, had my upgrade for a month and I've narrowed it down to the two i listed in the thread title.

do either of them have problems rooting? any signifigant gain or loss with LTE, since its a new connection for the phone and sprint hasn't been all that great with their mobile internet lately. most importantly the one with a mobile hotspot wins. I don't have cable and i can't buy it, so this would be my only source of internet. with LTE on the rise I feel like it would be considerably faster, maybe someday soon we'll be as fast as broadband.

Any really good roms out there for them yet? I love bare bones roms like CM7 or i guess it would be 9 on these phones. anything really crazy you can do with root on these great new phones? I know DS emulation is becoming more and more doable with our awesome dualcore, quad core and 1gb+ ram phones.

With reference to the screens.. a co worker of mine has the S3 and while its a nice screen in its own right, when she put it side by side next to mine it was game over. The colors pop in an almost unrealistic way on the S3 while the EVO LTE screen is alot brighter, a tad sharper and the colors pop with a natural tone. The screen on the EVO and ONE X has been called the best screen on a phone ever by more than a few website reviews. Also the EVO received an OTA update a couple of days ago which made an amazing phone even better.. faster, smoother.. But whats important to me(screen and looks) may not be very important to you, when phones like these 2 are so close in spec and hardware its the little personal features that are going to set them apart. You cant go wrong with either one :)

I have 2 EVO LTE's, they are good phones. I looked at the S3, it seems to have a better screen & smoother. I bought 2 EVO LTE'S in June, i'm now on my 5th & 6th phones for 2 lines preious were defective & got replaced. I'm working with Sprint to get out of my agreement. If i do i'm going with Verizon & the S3. My next concern is the data cap. I have wi-fi at home/work. I don't d/l music or movies, just check email, weather & sports, etc. Will 1gb on 2 lines using wi-fi be enough? I've read on line most users don't use that much data, i know it will be on the Verizon LTE network.
