Help Supersensitivity Attack :) Have you seen it?

Just had this happen - Running Stock V6 not rooted before/ nor restored before - the Spectrum went super sensitive - the capacitative buttons on the bottom would register several touches to one (know cause it vibrated several times and the screen actions were repeated) - Also seen on the Screen - - Touch one thing - another goes off - just went bonkers.

So with much difficulty - backed up some stuff/ and got ready to wipe all and res-install when I noticed the insanity had stopped - so the only thing different was it was not plugged into charging. Hmm - Charging cable issue??? changed charging cable - and it all abated to no more supersensitivty to the point of being unusable - so I did not proceed with major re-do of the phone.

So for now - it looks like it was the cable doing that ?? if that's possible. I certainly do not look forward to reinstalling all apps and resetting the phone to how I like it. OTOH Among other things such as a bonked touch screen - I really like the idea it was just the cable.

So problem averted - were back without major reformat and reinstall. Happy Ending (for now at least). Morale of the story - dont buy crappy cables (I actually hadnt - but it went bad I guess).

I swear my phone registers things at times before my finger even makes contact with the phone. Electrostatic?

Possible however more probable is light touch - especially if you do not have a cover on the screen - Gorilla glass or no Gorilla glass I'll stop using covers when they can guarantee no scratches to me. So installing a cover reduces such accidental touches.

This has happened on every android I've owned, especially when using stock or close to stock chargers.

I to have just recently started getting double registers on the softkeys and my touchscreen has been acting strange in general. I find it difficult to even explain what it's doing without writing a short story so I'll refrain. Just annoying because it interferes with swype :'[

I was thinking, possibly you had something creating a lot of electromechanical interference on your AC that was somehow being coupled to the phone via the charger or a poorly shielded cable. Or perhaps a lot of static build-up on the exterior of the phone because of the holder you may have on it or something like that.

But more than likely, an OS or application flakey.

In otherwords, I highly doubt it's your cable.

For all the complexity in the Android OS and I think the open-nature of what we can load onto these things - the possibility that those programs may contain bugs in terms of memory management or memory, file, interrupt access, I think your screen freaked out and appeared hypersensitive because of a set of conditions set up over time.

I always do a power cycle every few days. I've used Froyo and GB on a few phones, and even with GB on the Spectrum, power-cycling every few days seems like good medicine. All upside, and no downside.

Power cycling is always good. I did it on my Droid Incredible and I do it on my Galaxy Nexus. Its simple 'preventative maintenance'

As for the EFI (electromechanical frequency interference), I definitely think its possible, cable was either poorly shielded, or the shielding broke/wore down from use. And it could have just built up and fed it back into the phone, and fingers coming into contact with the capacitive touch screen (which uses your body's capacitance from your fingers to register touches) just caused a overload until discharged, (IE unplugging it from the charger, and a couple touches later...). It just never 'discharged' completely while plugged in because of the constant flow of electricity and interference.

While it is possible that it was from different buggy apps and build up of set conditions over time and such, I would say its much more probable that it was EFI.

I never had any issues with my HTC Evo (once the home screen releasing issue with sense 1.0 was resolved by flashing a Rom with sense 2, and I would go 700 - 998 hours with out powering my phone down. (There might still be a screen shot of the about -> battery screen showing the 998 hours still on the Evo forums here at android forums, but I don't feel like looking for it.)

The Rom was built on android 2.3.6, which I believe is the same we are using for the spectrum.

Three observations

Device original never flashed.
Repeated reboots did not clear the issue.
Changing cable did complete resolution.

So my impression stayed with cable fault. Or charger issue. For now at least.

Wait, rebooting didn't clear the issue?

Then likely, it's HW related, i.e. your screen is bad in one area and it will fail like this again, regardless of the cable you use. Or the holder / case you have it in is somehow exerting pressure on the screen.

That's my theory and I'm sticking to it. :smokingsomb:

As we know, sometimes powering down, even pulling the battery doesn't fix things, and you need to do an FDR.

I mean, if the phone got zapped, I could see how it acted flakey afterwards, and that flakiness was persistent across soft boot cycles.

However, I just think that unlikely.

Im hoping nothing happens to this phone for at least another 6 months. I'm just not in mood to blow money My Galaxy Nexus Experiment did not end well - so this is the only phone I have at this time. I've also sold the Rezound - which was an overheating piece of crap - so you can see I don't have a lot of options

Well, there is always replacement. However, they probably have to duplicate the problem... And your issue sounds like it's hard to predict or re-create.

badrsj, I think you are right about the cable thing. I have 3 chargers which are all different and only with one of them do I get the soft key and touchscreen problems. I never get it while it's unplugged.

Thanks for your thread here because it's what made me realise what was causing my problem. I thought I was going to have to return my phone for a refurb

You're welcome, now that you wrote this I recall, on a previous Android phone, when a certain charger was plugged it would just lock the screen got rid of that fast.
