Root Dear ADF - I could use some help rooting my HTC TB

So first off, I'm very new to rooting android Devices, but I am not new to the term "rooting" as I know that
Android is a derivative of Linux - and to gain "root" access is to gain administrative control over your device/utility/whatever you're working with.

So here's a few reasons as to why I want to root my device and a few of my worries about doing so - a list of "why I want to" and "what's keeping me from doing so".

Why I WANT to root my HTC Thunderbolt

  1. I'd like to be able to use my phone to it's full potential
  2. I've noticed HTC hasn't been doing much development for the Thunderbolt and I don't want to have to keep up with a new device when mine is perfectly fine.
  3. Bloatware is a pain.

What's keeping me away from rooting my HTC Thunderbolt

  1. Bricking it beyond repair
  2. Malicious applications gaining root access to my phone and accessing my personal data along with phone data
  3. not being able to revert back to stock - aka unroot.

Here's what my phone is running so far as version of Android and HTC information:
Android Version: 2.3.4
HTC Sense Version: 2.1
Software Number: 2.11.605.19 710RD

Any help with this is appreciated - and would love to hear responses.

Hey folks,

So I'm looking to root my Stock Thunderbolt for the first time, and I was curious if I could get some help with it. I run Ubuntu (Linux) so if there's a way to root through Ubuntu or any tools I can use through Ubuntu that'd be really nice.

Also - a few questions I have:
  1. How would I make/revert back to a Stock Rom if I wanted to?
  2. What are the ramifications of running an OTA update on a Rooted device?
  3. Are there any noob friendly tools that/instructions for rooting the HTC TB through Ubuntu?

Android Version: 2.3.4

1)make a backup with a custom recovery. then restore it
2)ramifications are anything from a recoverable bootloop to a non-recoverable brick

So would you be able to help me with doing this another way? I'm using the latest OTA update for my TB, will your device work through a Virtualbox on a 32 bit box.

why dont you just borrow a windows laptop,or go to a friends house and use their desktop? the tools and drivers are small downloads, and very unintrusive, and the process is quick. 20-30 minutes tops to use manual methods or trter's tool to:
-temp root .19
-run revolutionary/install recovery
-flash root files in recovery

failing that,do you have the sdk setup on your PC? there is a linux download for the revolutionary tool, and the adb commands to manually run fre3vo are very basic and straightforward. you can find them in the OP of http://androidforums.com/thunderbolt-all-things-root/418539-thunderbolt-root-unroot-thread.html

Does trters tool work on 32 bit or just 64 bit? and when I use it, what do I do exactly? do I just basically let it run? I do have the SDK on my computer and know how to use it somewhat.

What are the instructions to rooting with your phone using the latest OTA update - the 2.11.605.19 710RD update - how would I perform this on a Windows computer?

;)

My tool will presumably work on 32 bit. I haven't tried.

It will root any version and no Need to temp root its part of the process

So basically, just make sure I don't have HTC Sync installed - disable firewall, No EasyTether or Doubletwist - keep my phone in Dev mode with Stay Awake - so then what's the process afterwards?

What do I do first? it shows me 1,2,3,4, - do I just type in any of those?

Yep you don't need to do anything that it doesn't walk you through

So - does this also disable OTA updates? and if I wanted to flash a new rom - say the CM7 TB JellyBean rom that just got released - would I need to do something special?

I've been reading through these threads: http://androidforums.com/thunderbolt-all-things-root/418539-thunderbolt-root-unroot-thread.html and been sort of confused on what to do. Some say I need to go through Revolutionary, some say I need to use the adb - I'm a total noob at this and just want to get familiar with how to do all of this.
