Root how good is Droidmod 1.0

How good is Droidmod in rooting the Droid? Is there any major bugs or problems with Droidmod? What am I really getting with it, pinch and zoom for the web like my Eris? I watched the 3 part video over at Droid-life.com and it looks really easy to root and get the live wallpapers. I have an Eris right now but planning on picking a droid up on Sunday, the rooting seems so much easier for the moto droid than my Eris, any reason why?

droid is made by motorola and eris is made by htc so they have different root exploits. using droidmod to root is easy but you should do it the manual way, check the sticky or goto rootyourdroid.info doing it manually affords you way more choices for what rom you flash and you also learn a lot about how everything works.

DroidMod really isn't that good at all anymore. You should look into newer roms like Pete's Bugless Beast, ChevyNo1's Simply Stunning, and Koush's CyanogenMod. DroidMod hasn't been updated in forever.

Droidmod is stable and was great until all of the ESE53 ROMs came out. Now it's just lacking in many ways. Like shadowdude said, get Bugless Beast or another ESE53 based ROM.

Im looking for something that is really stable and easy to install, which droidmod looked that way. I'm not the smartest when it comes to manual command prompts. I kinda just want live wallpapers and pinch to zoom on the web. plus with this couldnt I always return to stock and then manual root?

I think droidmod is a great way to get into the root game. That being said you want to fully understand what your doing, how you do it, and why. You might also want to look into RomManager (app) which will give you a choice of different roms and will also give you the cleanest install (opinion). As the guys above have said DroidMod is now deficient in a number of ways. You will get pinch to zoom throughout your phone if you use a rom based off the ESE53 update but I dont think you will get native pinch to zoom with DM. DroidMod is how I first got root but since then I have learned how to do things my own way using ADB shell and so on. My suggestion would be to get rommanager and find a rom that suites you. Every person on here has a different rom that they prefer but you have to find one thats looks like it has everything you want + more. Just my $.02 . You can always go back to stock if you dont like it.

Again, Droidmod is really a subpar experience compared to the other ROMs. In terms of "get it done easily", CyanogenMod is the new DroidMod. If you need to get back to stock, this is the easiest and best way to do it and it works regardless of what ROM you're on.

The easiest way for a beginner to root and still end up with a decent ROM is to get the rooting update.zip, use DroidRootHelper to get busybox and flash_image. This guide is fairly old but it's what I used. If you follow this guide exactly as provided, you'll end up with an old version of SPRecovery (bad) and a decently new version of Bugless Beast.

What you want to do is follow it up until the "now to download bugless beast" line. Stop there and go download ROM Manager from the market and do as follows:

1) Open ROM manager and "Flash ClockworkMod Recovery"

2) Go into "Download ROM" on ROM Manager and choose CyanogenMod and then pick the latest version (at the time of this writing it's CyanogenMod 5.0.5.3). Make sure you check off Google Apps in the popup box otherwise you won't have a Market anymore!

3) Let it download and then it'll ask you if you want to make a backup and if you want to wipe data/cache. I highly recommend checking both of these boxes and then hitting OK.

4) Let the phone reboot and that's it. CyanogenMod is installed.


I just started using CyanogenMod (I used to use Bugless Beast) but the two are very similar and CyanogenMod is easier for beginners to use in that you can do most of it from the phone, rather than messing with your computer back and forth.

It's not that DroidMod is "not that good anymore," because it hasn't gotten any worse. It's just older than all of the others. CyanogenMod is the "new thing," so everybody is flocking over to it at the moment, but if you read around it certainly has some issues which in my opinion make it worse than DroidMod.

Newer isn't always better, people. Fast is fast. But you do have some options, which is always a good thing. Really, you could take a pick from any of the current ROM's and be much happier than stock.

I completely agree. DM1.0 may not be as up to date as all the newest Roms but I've found that it works best for my needs. I've tried some different roms but also end up flashing back to my trusty Dm1.0 with smoked glass theme. It just has everything I need and works flawlessly for me. Granted it may not be as pretty as the competition. But try them all out, and go ahead and root with DM. Just make sure you read up and understand what you're doing when you start changing stuff up. You don't need to build your own car to know how it works. But if something goes wrong just make sure you've made yourself knowledgeable enough to maintain it.

I used DM for a long time and 1.0 is very stable. Still I am running Bugless beast right now and its just as stable. If I were you though I would just get Rom Manager and the DM updater and see which one you like the best. Both root the phone for you if Im not mistaken(I know DM updater dose) and Rom Manager allows you to check out another rom besides DM.

Im on BB v9 and have had no problems. Besides no one really knows how long till the 2.1 is released and they already said there were not going to do an update till then.

I think it really depends on how much you want to play. All the ROM's generally have the same offerings. Overclocking, wireless tether, kernel replacement.. etc.

I think we've all come to understand that even though our phones are the same.... they are all very different. What do I mean?... Why BB runs great for some... then others can't get it to work. Why CyanogenMOD is slow on some... and quick on others. The fact is there are to many variables to determine... e.g., user input, environment conditions, overall experience and perceptions.

I rooted and Rom'd my phone originally because I wanted wifi tether... I didn't really care about the other things. I've work very deeply in the tech field for a long time and I didn't really want something that was going to burn more of my time. But once I did it.... and started following along... I started seeing that there was a great community out there.... sharing info... sharing techniques. So many developers working so hard to push the limits of an otherwise stacked piece of hardware.

That's when it became more than wifi tethering for me. And I have a feeling I'm not the only one.

I agree with DroidSuks when it comes to rooting being more than gaining a feature here or there. You can now make your phone YOURS! There are a lot of options out there for ROMs. If DroidMod does it for you...great. Personally, DM feels like one small step above stock. That's just me...I want more (cause I know I can get more). I'm on Cyanogen but if/when something surpasses that (in my opinion...no one else's opinion matters ) I will switch. You came from the Eris...okay, so maybe the HTC sense ROMs that a few devs are working on may speak to you (they are not ready for everyday use yet...but I'm sure they are coming soon).

As to your original statement...I want to offer some advice that I'm sure some people are tired of hearing from me...

While it is simple to root your phone with DroidMod...(seriously, "so easy a caveman could do it" ) ...DroidMod cannot help you if something goes wrong. Do yourself a favor...read through the rooting posts and do it yourself. This will give you insight into all of the things you will need to know After you root...for example...to switch ROMs, make nandroid backups, apply updates via update.zip files, etc.

DroidMod 1.0 may not be the latest and greatest at the moment, but it is very stable. I've been using it since the day it came out.

If you care about understanding the rooting process, read the sticky's and do it manually. If you really really really really don't care, then the droidmod DM updater will do it all for you.

The browser on DM 1.0 has pinch zoom, as does the latest version of google maps/nav (which is available in the market). I believe the live wallpapers are an option you can select at the boot loader mode options they give you (not sure about this...haven't done it in so long). if not, I know there's a hack to get it on there.

I ran DroidMod for a while when I first started, but soon moved on to AdamZ's Smoked Glass. For some reason DroidMod wouldn't let me connect via USB to move files back and forth. I really love how Smoked Glass lets you customize the rom to your liking and have been very happy with it so haven't ventured on to anything else yet.

I rooted first using the old Sholes version of the current Droid Mod. I downloaded ROM Manager the other day and have since played with Cyanogen, Ultimate Droid, and Bugless Beast. There are some differences in them, but they are all a lot more similar than different. The launcher2 capabilities of the newer than DroidMod is about the only difference, and that difference is more cosmetic in the way the app drawer is presented than different in a manner that says you can do more with any of them. DM Updater runs better for me than ROM Manager. I keep having problems with Ultimate Droid. The only OC kernel it will even load is AdamZ'z low voltage 1.0 GhZ. Nothing wrong with that, 1.0 is fast enough for me. I have never had a single issue with anything on Sholes/DroidMod. I went through all of that starting with Sholes 2.0.2. My Droid ran the launcher2 app that everyone had so much trouble like it was made to use it.

So, my advice is get both DM Updater and Rom Manager, pick a ROM and get used to what you can do with a rooted phone. You can really make a rooted phone unique to you as a individual. Some part of your uniqueness will focus, someplace along the line, as "...this is the ROM for me".

Or you will eventually wind up trying everything out there and will have a series of several you will rotate through. Who knows.

Bacl on track, the only thing that I have used DroidMod for was the DM Updater to get back to Sb from Clockwork.

I'm using Droidmod and love it. It's stable. I also have live wallpapers on my phone and OCing and pinch to zoom on the browser,wifi tethering. What else do I need,really? Well..how bout a EQUALIZER! Man,that's needed in the worst possible way. EVERY day I think 'when will they get a workable EQ on this thing?'. Music sounds ok but lacks punch and bass and adjustability....badly...someone please work on this!

There's a thread by Fabolous somewhere in this forum about a beta of the Milestone Equalizer ported to the Droid. I haven't tried it yet. I desperately want it too, but I figure it's a long and convoluted process and considering how often I switch ROMs, I'd have to go through that process every other day!

LOL...really I read this and started laughing.

But my thoughts on this subject are I also wanted to root my Droid but did not know how and was scared of messing it up. I can build a PC from scratch but I’m no programmer. I found out about DMUpdater and thought damn I might have to give this a try. Then when I started I canceled it a few times because of the warning…lol.

This was about 3 weeks ago, since then I have read all the forums out there learning all I can and now I’m flashing new recoveries, changing ROMS every other day, running scripts, nandroid backups, switching kernels, trying JIT, and removing stock apps.

DMUpdater is a good program to start with but learn all you can after.

I’m currently using NexBeast ROM (thanks Fabolous) with ChevyNo1-1.1Ghz-LV-7slot kernel, JIT enabled

Had the same problem. Ended checking the debugging box and everything works again. Weird, though.

How good is this? It's a thread on DM talking about Cyanogen...you know...Cyanogen...regarded as being among the best ROMs if not the best ROM currently available???

I read this post here on AF and people have their own opinions. I don't like DroidMod 1.0...but I wouldn't chastise people that do. This is some sick cult BS that just had me laughing. It's like their forum is a bad rendition of the children of the corn! lol
