Is this what we can expect with ice cream sandwich?

ICS is real smooth and offers unbelievable battery life, because of how 4.0 handles 'standby' battery power. So you'll immediately see improved battery life. Case in point, my D2 on 2.3.6 was getting 8-10 hours a day on a charge; after CM9 (and Galnet Miui) were flashed, I EASILY got 24 hours on the same use. Granted, that was a CDMA and not an LTE phone, so LTE will use more juice, but the savings will be noticeable.

Of course, LG could completely narse the whole thing up and we could have a repeat of the OS we currently have for stock, but I'm hopeful they got their shit together in the 6 months since the phone's launch.

Sounds legit, lets hope we don't have to wait much longer

man i really like that phone. I hadn't heard of it. Shame you can't get it in the US yet. I wonder why the worlds largest economy gets dissed by the cell phone companies so much. It's kinda strange to me why so many phones hit overseas first and in some cases never make it here.

thanks for the thread though jd. Very nice phone and man it sure does run smooth. For me, LG is making the best looking and best speced phones right now. Can't wait until their new 1080p 5in display phones are out later this year.

I agree 1080p will be amazing on a mobile device. I still love my 720p on my spectrum but we need ics asap.

Don't hold your breadth on that with Spectrum. If you look on Razr, Rezound forums, general consensus is their battery life got a bit worse after ICS update. ICS runs faster and smooth, but battery life doesn't seem to be its benefit especially the ones updating from GB. Your experience with D2 is the first that I ever heard battery gets better with ICS. Maybe old single core 3G phones are more friendly to ICS?

Optimus 4X in OP seems like great phone. But without LTE, I don't think it will land in US. But the leaked Optimus G with quad S4 pro, LTE will probably come here this year. I'm more interested in that phone than Razr HD.

... And all of those phones are LTE, where as the d2 is not. LTE uses far more battery, so you have to be more vigilant with the use of the battery. My wife has the same complaint and ya know what? She has Facebook notification, Gmail notification and sms all updating and using LTE all day long. She refuses to turn off Facebook notification, which is the worst offender, so she has to suffer the pain of a dead battery more than I. Using wifi whenever home will cut down on drain considerably, but most drain is caused by the apps you're using, not the os.

That aside, at the core, ics is far better at standby consumption than gb. It doesn't allow the amount of background processes, inherent in Android, to run when the phone screen is off,so all of those system apps in gb that run to check the status of the database and the hardware go into standby whe the screen is off and are only awoken when the screen is; it's even more important to use a lag free governor on ics. The exception for standby use is when a user grants an app that usages, like the notification process in Facebook.

Well, still it doesn't make sense for LTE phone getting worse in battery life with ICS update if ICS is indeed more efficient with background processes as you say. We are comparing the same phone battery life with two OS versions.

Also ICS still allows processes, services, apps in background unless you tweak settings to limit them in developer setting. You can disable some unnecessary built-in apps in ICS though. We had ton of battery issue threads in Gnex section and a lot of times some bad apps causing frequent wakelocks were culprit. 4.0.2 was awful with very high Android OS percentage in battery stats. 4.0.4 corrected that issue and improved battery by about 30%. 4.1 will be even better.

my wife noticed much better life on her razr after the update.

Well, on a RAZR, sure. Everything got better after the update on that phone didn't it? :smokingsomb:

No doubt in my mind the Spectrum was a very good choice for me when I was selecting between phones... Yeah, I expect an improvement in battery charge longevity under ICS... We'll see though.

I have found times where I'll play a game while on the thinking chair and when I check my usage it's been draining my battery more than my display was. Like you said, it's situational but sometimes I can't make it through an 8/9 hour day without it being dead from streaming music with the display off for the most part. That is also when I'm on stock. When I have a governor on the cpu it always does much better.

All I am saying is don't hold your hope too high for battery with ICS update. As far as I see, that's not happening with most high end phones in general though there are some exceptions as always. Battery issue is the most common thread for any phone after ICS update. It's not just perception. So consider yourself lucky if battery doesn't take much hit.

But I hope things go well for Spectrum with future updates. I think LG deserves more attention in android community and the upcoming Optimus G with S4 Pro chip seems very promising if they get it done right.

I think that's purely coincidence though. LTE is a huge source of the problem, but also more and more apps are active and static, so they're using more data and by proxy using more juice.

When we all had 3g, the apps were limited in data use, so in the grand scheme of things, we didn't see battery drains like today. I guess my point is, as with most issues, it's not the os, but is the apps/crap people put on their phones.

Though you're right things like LTE radio, data hungry apps are very common nowadays compared to 3G phone era, it's not like people with battery trouble after ICS update added LTE radio to their phone or started using bunch of new battery hog apps all of sudden. The only major thing changed for them is the OS from GB to ICS. Some even tried factory reset due to battery issues.

I saw this trend with Razr, Rezound, GS2, etc. Of course we have yet to see LG's ICS update ROM as it depends on manufacturer. So possibly they can do better job than Moto, HTC, Samsung. But I'm not very optimistic on that.

I will have to find a reference for this, other than my friend who thinks he knows everything; however, it would appear that LG has a new display factory for the new screens that Apple has in store for their next gen devices (the thinner two layer glass IPS display with built in touch responder. Versus the standard one in use now, where the touch layer is separate.

Along with the factory for these came Apple's exclusive rights to manufacture these displays in any size, as long as they can meet Apple's supply demands first.

As I said, I'll have to find a real reference for this still, but it should make next year's LG phones pretty hot commodities as long as the Samsung trial verdict doesn't scare all the android manufacturers away...
