One Of My Favourite 'Improvements' That Came With Jelly Bean is The swipe up that launches Google now.
A brilliant feature that perfectly ruins use of dolphin in landscape mode.

As I never want to use it, is there a way to permanently remove that action?

You can permanently disable Google Search (therefore, Now), but I'm not sure that's what you want. Even with the app disabled, the swipe from the right (add-ons) doesn't work in landscape mode. I had to go to the menu to access that panel while in landscape mode.

That sounds likewhat I want. I have never used the search thing at the top of the home screen,so if that is what I lose perfect!
I always Google in a browser.

I have it disabled nicely ever since this thread. Can't use the free screen space, but it's nice not having it there.

Another question on it.

I'm sure I saw the latest jellybean update, 4.1.2,that I am getting nagged to install has removed the option to disable this.
Can anyone confirm this yes or no?

Yes, but you can uninstall updates and then disable it. I just did, at least. :)

I don't know if you can do it with a non-rooted phone. JBSourcery ROM has the ability to add five. You can also removed Google now.

If you want to use the extra space, all you need to do is download a custom launcher like Nova or Apex from the play store. Once installed, press home and set it to launch the custom one always. Once set, you can go into options->home screen setting. There are options to allow you to set how many rows and columns in both portrait and landscape mode you want to have available. Also, further down the list is an option that says show persistent search bar. If you set it to never, it should delete them. If not, they become normal widgets that your can delete and then be able to use the space again.
