SMS over wifi

All,

I have a new Android phone (LG Optimus Elite) with Virgin Mobile as my carrier. I have found that I have poor service at my work, where I occasionally need to text from. However, I do have excellent wi-fi coverage.

I imagine that Android should have the ability to send text messages (from my current number - I don't want an app like Google voice, Pinger, etc) over wifi, if coverage is currently poor or unavailable.

Does anyone know if Android phones support this? I also imagine that this would be dependent upon the carrier's support for such a feature. Does anyone know if Virgin Mobile is capable of this either (I am contacting them about it separately)?

I have searched to try and find an answer to this, but in most cases I find the recommended answer is to use some sms app. As mentioned above, this is only an acceptable solution for me if I am able to send/receive messages from my regular number - preferably using Android's default "Messaging" app.

Thank you very much,

Check your carrier's website, some of them have the ability to send texts and mms through their web page. But other than that, there is no way to use wifi to send/receive SMS/mms using a wifi connection.

Hi there.

I was using the google voice app to sms via WiFi.
It's a little confusing because you will then be getting multiple notifications when you get a text, but I think you can just disable notifications of you regular sms and use google voice exclusively.
I would reccomend reading about it first.
