Root Evo lte...root?

I Started a thread a while back, around May. I was going back and forth between the evo lte and Samsung galaxy 2. Being a happy evo 1 owner, I chose the lte.... Well... I kinda hate it now. I have issue after issue after bugs after..... I just want to punt it off a cliff.

1. Going to home screen I get a 10 second lag
2. Gmail won't load, just a white screen then asks me to report an issue.
3. Navigation, same as 2 but black screen.
4. Media, music players, it comes with 2. I use Google play the most, I download mp3s of a talk show I listen to, I must have had 20 under the recent tab.... Suddenly, they don't show up. However they show up under the stock music player.

I end up doing the equivalent of the battery pull out to reset the phone at least once a day. (hold power for @ 15 seconds)

I'm beyond frustrated, I have done some research some say it's sense crashing, others hard reset, others say return it for a new one.

Any suggestions? I may root it to get rid of this sense garbage. Any recommendations for what rom is best and or reliable?

I don't know what your problem might be or if rooting would help, but have you talked to Sprint about it yet?

The phone REALLY shouldn't be doing all of that stuff.

Weird, I haven't had one issue with my device.

You've rebooted and made sure the device OS and firmware is up-to-date.

1. Are you using the Gmail app or another app to access your email? If so what application? There could be a problem with the settings.
2. Google Navigation? Do Maps work? You've updated to the latest Google Maps app?
3. Do you have podcast to play in google play? Or in another player.

Maybe its a bad unit?

I check for updates all the time. Seems its up to date. I use the stock Gmail app to access Gmail only. Navigation didn't work but maps didn't either. I have some podcasts as well, those don't show up either, however I usually use pocket casts to play them streaming.

I'm no lt having any of those issues.. Sorry but it sounds like you have a lemon to me.. I would bring it to Sprint. They will most likely replace it for free.. You wouldn't want to go through the trouble of rooting it to find out its doing the same thing.

First thing I would do is a factory reset.

Next thing I'd do is root and flash a custom ROM. Its sounding like a software problem. That would easily be fixed via root.

i agree with rxpert here. it does sound more like software then anything else. a factory reset should fix it. and i say root the phone anyways regardless. with my phone rooted i am getting pretty good battery life and performance now that we have some custom kernels out. plus you can get rid of all that bloatware and maybe even try some Jelly Bean

If you have Wallet set up, make sure you reset it from within the app before you do a factory reset or it might not ever work again.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll try a factory reset now. What is jelly bean btw? Also what is the best rom and kernel for the lte?

Jellybean is the most current version of android. Its major improvements include project butter and google now. It's crazy smooth. The jellybean roms aren't quite 100% yet but they are def worth a test run to see if it works for you.

Viper4g and MeanROM are probably the top 2 sense based roms out right now.

There's only 3 custom kernels available so far, and there's not worlds of difference between them yet. Check out each one before flashing

JB has not been released yet, officially. But there are a few JB roms out now that you can try. And just so you know, all things like ICS and JB are just software upgrades and all you have to do is find a rom that has them cooked in and flash it.

basically,kernels are a piece of software that acts as your go between the hardware(phone) and software(a custom rom). they tell how much juice to pass on to the phone and when to do it.

One last question before I move forward. What's a good backup app that I can use. I used titanium in the past but the only version I see is one that only works with rooted phones. Isn't the backup needed before the root?

i would try My Backup Pro. it backs up everything and it is not root required.

Plus, you can start by rooting with the zedomax method (perm root only, not full root, but a great first step) and then use that access to backup with Titantium or MyBackup Root.

I also endorse MyBackup Pro as a great alternative.

but the issue here is that the op is not rooted yet. you can't use TB until you are rooted. MBP can back certain things without needing root access. it is a good way to back things up prior to rooting the phone.

Small update. I did a factory reset, then a major update. The phone worked a little better.... Still apps crash all the time. Or they just load to a blank screen. I called sprint, they have no idea (no suprise). Should I call and see about getting a new phone all together? Then root the new one?

yeah if you have not rooted the phone and it is acting like this then i would take it in and get a replacement, if they can't fix it. try to get them to fix it first though, not really sure what your hboot is. they may give you a new phone with the newer hboot which makes it harder for you to flash roms and such. rooting it is easy though.

If you go under your settings and select power, uncheck "fastboot".

Now power the phone off. Wait for it to completely shut down. Now hold the volume down button and press and hold the power button simultaneously for a few seconds, then release the power button, but continue to hold the volume down button.
A white screen should appear with a bunch of gibberish on it. The number at the top is your hboot number.

This screen is called the bootloader or "hboot". Has a sweet image of Andy riding a skateboard too.

If you've got a newer hboot you can still root with HTCdev, and flash roms. It's a little more involved this way because your security is still turned on. So you can't flash to the .boot partition. This is where the kernel is located. You'll need to flash that separately through fastboot.

The process to do this is in the root guides at the top of the forum. I'll link you when I get on my PC.

Ahh that's the trick. I was trying to get to the bootloader and the buttons just flashed a bunch of times. I Remember when I had my evo 4G i didn't have to unchecked fastboot.

yeah you must have been on froyo. the gingerbread ota for the og evo introduced the fastboot function. i believe going forward you will continue to see fastboot being used. i always keep it off.
