An accident happened in front of me on my way to work last night and I dialed 911. I wasn't paying much attention to the phone at the time, but after I dialed I think the emergency icon was showing on the screen, a red plus sign. After i hung up, I looked at the phone and there was a red notification in notification bar. I pulled it down and it said something about emergency and there was a timer that I thought said it was going to redial in 4 minutes or so and all apps were disabled. I was able to choose to stop that and things went back to normal. Anybody know what was going on? Something to do with calling 911. With all the other things going on, paying attention to my phone wasn't a priority at the time. Also, when i look at recent calls, that call isn't in the history.

When you dial 911 your phone is put into Emergency mode. Basically this activates your phone for GPS and stops all other communication on your phone until you exit the mode by pressing "Exit". Let's emergency response units find you quicker.

You can receive calls but cant place them except to 911 and all data apps are locked out

It is FCC required on all modern cell phones.

What he said.

Had the same thing happen to my phone when I called 911 to report a bad accident out in front of my house a while back.

Yep..happens every time you dial 911...even when your RAZR Maxx decides to piss you off and not connect to 911. Roll over accident that turned into a vehicle fire and fricken phone acted like it called 911 all 3 times but failed to connect. Just lucky someone else was able to get through and come up with a fire extinguisher. Sometimes I hate technology.
