According to Engadget, April 26 is D-day:

HTC Hero update to Android 2.1 on April 26th in home country of Taiwan -- Engadget

That's ONE MORE MONTH... you're not the only one thinking it.

And not that I feel entitled to demand (let's not forget HTC never made any promises), but is it just me or is this eternal waiting game getting ridiculous to the point that is even worse than Ryan Seacrest's teasing techniques?

Can anyone confirm whether or not it would be beneficial at this point to move to Taiwan in order to get 2.1?

The problem being... People get their hopes up based on rumour and speculation, then the rumour changes and people feel like HTC are letting them dowm, untill I get an official date from HTC im hoping for nothing!

Exactly. The question thus remains: Why is it that HTC seems to be completely incapable of giving a solid official release date?

The rumours and the speculation have the 2.1 update happening any time between next week and the beginning of May. I'm willing to bet that one of them is right, therefore it's going to be relatively soon, therefore it's pretty much ready and HTC know when they're going to release it. So why can't they simply tell us?

Oh dear. You've got yourself over excited based on your own assumptions which are based on rumours, and then you're disapointed when nothing materialises.

Here's the reason why there isn't an official release date - because HTC arn't ready to announce a release date. They're probably still testing it.

I just wish people would stop posting "2.1 release data" threads, and getting me all unnecessarily excited.

I'm not expecting a release until HTC officially announce it will be so.

I've never known any release to be hyped up so much. Perhaps HTC marketing are taking notes from Apple. Just suggest by Twitter that maybe something will be released at some point in time, and let the rest of the world do the advertising for you via unfounded rumors.

Could it be that HTC is awaiting the release of Desire before they release the update to the Hero in order not to risk that many choose to keep an recently updated hero? just a thought.

In Sweden we are getting rumers every day now about Hero update and we are looking forward for the Desire release on the 8th of April. Placed an order for the Desire today and hopefully i will be satisfied.

I've sold my Hero and bought a Desire.

Am I the only one here who thinks that's exactly what it is all about? They've just released two brand spanking new phones. The latest and the greatest version of the OS is one of their selling points. Why on Earth would they risk of even the slightest adverse affecting the potential sales of the Desire and Legend by releasing the upgrade now? Right now would be the worst possible moment from their business' point of view. I want the update too but I'm not surprised at all that they rather wait until anyone who thinks of going your way, does that.

I completely agree with you. If they release the update now, then the beautiful legend & desire are no longer the top dogs in the mobile phone market at the moment

I really can't see why on earth the Legend & Desire would be "out classed" by the Hero. Its the old hardware. Both Legend & Desire are brand new hardware. So keeping us old customers waiting it a bit OTT.
I for one can't afford to upgrade to the Legend/Desire & i absolutely love my Hero i just wish it was a little quicker. I'm really looking forward to this update. I totally agree that having several threads about 1 thing is taking it a bit far. Can't we just have all this in 1 thread so we don't have to sift through pages of them.

Well, nobody said they'll be 'outclassed'. I meant they wont enjoy the privilege of being the only phones with the latest Android OS in their first week of release. The Legend is not much better than the Hero, at least some might think its not worth the additional

Looking at some of the comments on this and other threads it would seem phone owners are quite happy to bin their phone every in order to get the latest HTC incarnation.

I'm beginning to understand why Apple are so successful with their iphone.
I have quite a different impression: Whenever there's a new incarnation of the iPhone (original model, then 3G and then 3GS), a great chunk of owners jumped on the renewal wagon... but that's only my impression (don't have actual evidence of it)
