ZTE Optik Testing

I'm testing out the ZTE Optik (Sprint) for an application we're running at work and I'm having an occasional problem with the device randomly shutting down. Then it seems to continue to reboot (on it's own) every minute or two after that. I have to catch it right after it reboots, then make sure I shut it down properly, and then it seems to work fine when I turn it back on. This has happened a few times over the last couple weeks and I'm wondering if anyone else has experienced this. ??? I've read that there is already an update available (build 09) but I haven't received it yet, and from what I read about it, I'm not sure it'll fix my problem. Any other users of this device, I'd like to hear what you think about it.

I've had mine for about a month, and so far I've not had any issues.

I've got a ton of apps installed, including 3 different browsers, lots of games...the only problem I have on a fairly regular basis is a mysterious 'launch crash'.

Sometimes I'll launch an app...it will start...but then immediately go back to the desktop. It's almost like hitting the 'Home' button...I can immediately re-launch the app and it's fine.

I do have a 16GB flash card, so maybe that's the issue, but it's such a minor issue I haven't bothered moving any apps to test that theory.

The Dolphin browser is the only app that I've ever had crash in mid-use...the Kindle app used to crash pretty frequently, but a recent update seems to have solved that problem.

I use my tablet almost exclusively on WiFi, and occasionally turn 3G off to get a little more battery life.

A few of us at my store are interested in it but we have definitely seen this "rebooting" problem. My first Optik sale came back because every time he went to download an app the system froze and had to be restarted. Not sure if this is an issue with the Optik but there seems to be some glitches.

I once bought a cheapo android tablet and the expirience was awful. I was hoping the Optik was the middle ground but not sure if its worth it yet...

I just got a ZTE Optik. In my experience there are significant problems. On a daily basis they system will crash. It will do this in one of two ways. 1) Shut down and sprint logo will appear like a restart. This process will repeat over and over until I force a restart then it seems to be ok for the next 12 to 24 hours. Or 2) I will launch an app such as browser or Gmail and will crash back to desktop. This will repeat until I force a restart. The other major problem I see with this device is the Clock. It’s never right It will set itself after a forced restart but by the end of the day it’s as much as an hour off. This is a constant thing since day one, every day. Today is my last day to return it so I think I will be doing that. It’s an inexpensive device but it’s too costly for something that simply does not work as it should.

Thanks for the feedback! Glad to know that others are experiencing the same thing I am (and it sounds EXACTLY the same). Have any of you received the update to build B09 that I've been reading abou yet? The description that I found of the update doesn't say anything about resolving this locking up/shut down problem, but you never know.

Have not experianced any crashing issues with mine. Been working great. FYI #1 - I also have a Motorola Xoom, rooted Kindle Fire and 3 Android phones so I have a lot of devices to compare the Optik to. FYI #2 - Never recieved the B09 update but just got updated to B10 this morning. Have no idea what has changed as Sprint does not have any detail on thier site for this update.

Actually I think this is a nice little tablet. Build quality is very good, much better than I expected. Hope to see ICS update some day but I'm not holding my breath.

I also received the update to B10 on Friday (everything I read online said it would be B9, but ended up being B10). I've done very little testing since then, but so far so good (fingers crossed!). If this ends up resolving the shut down issue, I agree...this is a VERY nice tablet. What we're planning to use the tablets for requires a wireless plan, so this is perfect...especially for the price.

Just to update you, Sprint replaced the Optik that I was testing for a new one. The new Optik has the latest software (Android 3.2.1) and one week into testing, I have to say that I'm very impressed. No random rebooting, no browser force close, etc. I realize it's still reasonably early, but so far this one is surpassing my expectations, thankfully. :)

I too purchased a ZTE Optik and have been using it since mid-April. I originally purchased the device to read electronic versions of newspapers, magazines, etc. because I got tired of the eyestrain from my HTC Incredible. I didn’t have any real high expectations for the device but the more I used it the more I wanted to expand its capabilities. I have not experienced any real problems and think it’s a great little tablet. Most of the time I use Sprint’s 3G network; occasionally I will use WIFI. I like the Optik. I use it every day. I have version B10.
I’m not a gamer so I don’t have too much feedback in that space. My grandkids use Kidspaint, Angrybirds, Giraffes Preschool Playground and Railmaze --entertainment while at restaurants. All work fine with no problems.
I use GoogleMaps, Beat the Traffic and Gas Buddy when on the road all with no problems.
I’m an IT person working for a domestic car company so I also use it for work. I live with Evernote and Documents to Go. I use Cisco WebEx to attend audio conferences (I actually use my HTC Incredible for voice and the Optik for data because Verizon’s network doesn’t allow simultaneous voice & data). I use the default browser plus Firefox (initial WebEx requirement until the latest download corrected that need). I forward Outlook meeting notices (vCalendar format) to my Yahoo account so I can post the WebEx meeting notices. I had to download an iCal importer to post the meetings to the Optik calendar. I used Skype a couple of times and it seemed OK.

From what support told me, there is another maintenance update coming but there are no plans for ICS or JB. Personally I think that's bullsh*t for a tablet introduced in February and still being sold, well given away.

I'm running JB on mine, and it's pretty sweet. Unfortunately it kills the data connection so I"m wifi only which is fine. I have an overdrive pro and wifi most places or can tether from my Epic in a pinch. It's built like a little tank, and the smart cover is nice. Wish I could find the HDMI dock they make for their other tablet. They use the same dock connector so I imagine it would work for the Optik as well. ZTE seems to be pretty lackluster with accessories and support. Shame.
