Is Apple becoming a monopoly?

Apple made a small cut in Android's Samsung area resulting in a little blood loss. However, Android is not a hemophiliac so the bleeding is easily controlled and it will fully heal with no permanent damage.

Meanwhile, Android continues to easily dominate worldwide smartphone sales and make significant inroads into the tablet market.

Moving on...nothing to see here...

As long as Google is around Android will be around. I think someone else summed it up nicely. Apple is a company that has ran out of idea's. There just trying to buy time with the lawsuits. They don't come up with something new and exciting soon. They know there going to go back to being that little boutique manufacture that sells to the "We think where cool crowd".

They thought up the
I-Pod
I-Phone
I-Pod Touch
I-Pad
---------
The way apple has stayed on top is by coming out with that latest must have gadget. The problem is now they cant think of anything. Android is that latest must have gadget really. Compared to the competition its a far Superior product.

To top it off Microsoft is around the corner with there new tablet. Which I have a feeling makes Apple even more nervous. The majority of computers in the WORLD run Window's. Microsoft mange's a hit with its new Window's based devices. Which I am told is designed to interface seamlessly with your desktop app's wise.

Apple can pretty much kiss there butt's goodbye there also not stupid enough to attack Microsoft either. Microsoft might not have the same capital as Apple right now but they have been around the block a time or two. There still arguably the top dog in the computer world.

I guess what I am getting at is this. Apple has to take down Microsoft or Android to continue to survive in the market. Microsoft is out of the question so there going after Android.

Still, I feel like Google is too much of a Juggernaut for even Apple.

I agree but the difference between Microsoft and Google is. Microsoft is old school they been around since the start. They know the in's and outs of the legal system better. They know who to speak with they have friends in high places. That google could only dream of having. I personally think if you compare the two Google is a bigger company. The bottom line is Microsoft has more experience then google does so that makes them more dangerous to attack.

I am really nervous that Apple will try to end all Android products. Believe me, if they can, they will. Has anybody read Steve Jobs' book?

Here is an article that talks about Apple being a monopoly.

I would not worry. I think Android will be with us for decades to come. That said, Blackberry could release something very cool or Microsoft listens to their customers and changes their Windows phone OS that gives us pause.

Remember, there are those inevitable "two guys in a garage" that always seem to come up with something cool that is unexpected.

Apple is a monopoly of sorts. If you own an iDevice, there is only one store you can visit for applications. Forgetting jailbreaking for a moment. With Android, it is easy to DL applications from almost anywhere.

Steve Jobs was quite clear about Android. He HATES it. But Jobs is gone now. I will go out on a limb and say that Apple without Jobs will be free to do anything they wish, like license iOS to others or release three or four new phones every day like the Android side does or perhaps release budget iThings like a cheaper iPhone or iPad.

Take comfort in the fact that Android is getting too big to fail. Apple will not take out Google/Android. About all they can do is use and we all know how much Apple hates suing people.

Eh.. I think Apple has reached its peak in popularity and has shown its true colors to the public. They have their heads stuck too far up their own a$$es. When they sued Samsung they basically said that people were too stupid to differentiate between and IPhone and a Samsung Galaxy. Really? I remember IBM was huge in the 80s, then Dell was huge in the 2000s, I predict a similiar fall for Apple.

Only time and sales figures will tell the tale. Not sure the general public really cares about the suits or even knows the details. They want iPhones/iPads and that is all many/most know.

Again, lets wait until the next iPhone hots the ground running. Then we will know just how much the public will accept from Apple.

I think IBM lost market share in part because of competition. Basic assumption and sure, there is/was more to it. I remember the cost was high and there were other manufacturers beginning.

As for Gateway, I remember them. Weren't they powered by cows? Something like that.

We did not help. We went from purchasing hundreds of their desktops and decided we could build our computers for less $$$. Even though we got a discount because we made hundreds of thousands of modems for them.

But I got lost in the constant firing and their clanging their minds about our quality. I think they dropped us several times because of QC.

There are many reasons GW lost and I am not so sure you can compare them to Apple and their current business model. I owned several and they were never up and running all the time.

In the legal definition of monopoly, no they're not.

If they forced you to use nothing but apple made accessories, apple search apple maps now you're getting into a grey area. But you don't need an apple product to live.

The word 'monopoly' is not a legal term, so there's no such thing as a legal definition of the word.

And a company can be a monopoly without 'forcing' you to buy anything.

The only requirement for being a monopoly is that you are the only entity that sells a particular good or service.

When a company can raise prices with impunity due to lack of competition (lack of consumer choice), they have a monopoly on the market for that product.

Apple is not becoming a monopoly given that on both phone and tablet markets, there are more and more choices available to consumers. The iPad enjoyed monopoly status for quite some time, and it's still in a darn good position, but it's trending away from being a monopoly.

Every empire falls, though. Even tech empires. Greed and overreaching has brought every empire to it's knees, and there's always someone looking to supplant the empire. TBH, I don't think it'd be Google (at least in the long run) that takes down Apple. It'll likely be Amazon.

Microsoft didn't prevent you from installing other web browsers than Internet Explorer, and yet they were called a monopoly and forced to divide their OS and Internet divisions into separate companies. However, public perception of Microsoft was negative (and still kind of is) and Apple is perceived as a good American company. Once that changes, it could mean politicians and lawyers are more likely to go after them.

Yup indeed. Even Apple can falter if they do not mind the store and pay attention. Not sure what it would take for Apple to fail. I am sure the Romans thought their empire would last for eons.

I will suggest that Apple is not like the Romans in that they know they can fail so they likely take steps to minimize the risks.

You might be right as far as amazon goes. They are much like apple in that they have the Fire and the infrastructure to handle media downloads. Not sure what Google can do.

Perhaps Apple can purchase Amazon and drive the world of haters nutso. If the gubberment would allow it.
