Root [CDMA] Hboot 1.5 versus 1.58...how to get 1.58

So my phone is rooted a s-off on hboot 1.5. Currently, I'm using MeanROM v2.6. I obtained s-off using the wire trick (juopuntbear...sorry if misspelled) method. I understand there is a difference between 1.5 and 1.58, and I would like to how to get to 1.58 from where I am now. I've different "solutions", but can't tell if they're right for me or will cause issues with the phone.

Also, are there any pros vs. cons between these two hboot versions.

*the easiest way to install the recovery is as a PG86IMG in hboot.

-download this:
PG86IMG-recovery_ext_4.zip

-check the md5 wich should be:
PG86IMG-recovery_ext_4.zip ede71ca8a3e02664ab002b0054487c6a

-plaCE it on the root of your sd card, and rename it "PG86IMG"

-boot to hboot. it should find your file and ask you to update. tell it yes :)

-reboot. immediately remove or rename PG86IMG from your sd card,as its presense will keep you from entering recovery thru hboot in an emergency

-now you can go back to recovery and wipe cache and dalvik cache and flsah superSU.

That is a very easy way to flash your recovery. I keep that on my sd card along with supersu. Just remember to change the name of the recovery file. you can just add .bak to it or anything you want really.

Here is the SuperSU Patch

Once you flash that recovery, just boot into recovery and choose install zip from sd card. then choose that supersu patch and it will root your ICS!

Cool. So pretty much just download and run RUU, then re-flash MeanROM or any other ROM, correct?

The RUU will return you to stock.. So you will have to re-root per my post above. it's very easy.

Here is where things get tricky. On hboot 1.5 you aren't able to flash ICS roms. Yes there are some roms that "are ICS" but they are built with the GB base. You can't flash anything that has an actual ICS base.

If you update with the RUU, you can flash any ICS based rom but not GB based roms.... Since you are s-off though, you can run a GB RUU if you decide to go backward on your software version.

Ok...now I'm confused a little. So the second post (embedded from Scotty85) discusses "the easiest way". Is this different from what you suggested about the RUU? Or is it meant to be used in conjuction? Also, when it says, "place file on the root of your sd card", what exactly does that mean?

This is in conjunction with the RUU. The RUU is what will update everything on your phone and it will put stock ICS on your phone.

Then you have to gain root access again. I used the post from Scotty85 because it really makes it simple.

On the root of your sd card simply means not in any folders. Just place it right on the SD card.

Basically you just put that recovery zip file right on your sd card. name it PG86IMG. Then start phone into bootloader (volume down+power).
Then just say yes when it asks and your recovery is flashed.
It's a lot easier than using the fastboot commands to flash a recovery. Now that you are s-off you don't have to use those fastboot commands or connect to the computer.

You also will need the superSU patch on your sd to flash. Flashing it will root your phone. You could flash any ICS custom rom instead of supersu.

The supersu patch will leave you stock but with root access. But if you want a custom rom feel free to flash your choice in place of supersu.

Why want the new bootloader? Don't have your guys' device so I'm not aware of the differences, but I've always recommended never to update it on my devices

Just curious

I did it on my phone so that I could put stock ICS on my phone. I wanted to check out the real thing rather than use a GB based ICS rom.

With the GB bootloader it won't allow you to use ICS... But being s-off you can downgrade right back to 1.5 so it's not too big of a deal really.

Okay, I got it. Some of the newer ICS ROMS, I've noticed, mention that the radio version can be upgraded to the 2.89 version versus the 2.17, but in order for this to work you need to be on hboot 1.58. This is why I started this entire post. Should have been clear about that to begin with, but then again I am on a learning curve and appreciate all the useful information I can get.

Running now. Took me awhile, as I kept getting error code 170. Once it was running, it verified my current radio version as 2.58. I went ahead and did the update even though it's the same version, but will it update my hboot in the process? I'm presuming yes, as this was the point of my post. I guess MeanROM v2.6 loads completely as radio v2.89.

I agree, I would upgrade radio but not boot-loader myself ;) The only reason why some want to upgrade there boot-loaders is to use some of the latest Kernels which require the latest BL

When you say "it will need to be rooted again", does this imply that a trained person would never be able to tell that the phone was previously rooted? I ask because I know I've read different things about "un-rooting", just wasn't sure if it was possible. Personally, I could care less if Sprint knew and all that "voided warranty" stuff. I'm still gonna root the phone again with the process you suggested. Plus, like mentioned earlier, I'm still a newbie and prefer to gain as much information as possible so that I can help others as well. Just the way I am.

In your case since you are s-off now you would be able to send your phone in without a trace. I wouldn't unlock your bootloader again because then if you lock it it will say "relocked" instead of "locked". S-off put your bootloader back to "locked". If you ever need to send your phone in you would run the ruu to return your phone to stock. Then you would use fastboot to run the command that turns your phone back to s-on. That's it. You would leave no trace.

It will need to be rooted again because the RUU returns it to stock. Like the day you bought your phone. It won't be rooted after the ruu because your bootloader will be locked and you are s-off. Your phone won't be able to grant root access or super user permissions until you root it.

All that will involve is flashing a recovery, and then flashing a rom or supersu patch.

I haven't really learned yet about just updating radios. I definitely wouldn't be comfortable giving advice or instructions on this as of now. Hopefully someone will ask questions about it soon so I can follow the thread and learn some new things.

In your case it is not needed as you upgraded to the latest RUU which had both, Radio is simply to flash, put on the root of the SD card and flash in bootloader, see below also will post a video for you, if I recall in the video he had trouble getting into bootloader, but it will give you the process

Thanks Don. I figured it would be easy. I just heard you can royally screw things up if you're flashing the wrong ones. I'm actually back to gb now. I ran a gb ruu and flashed ZR3D 4.3 gt. :p

Yep you could brick your phone if you flash a GSM radio to a CDMA phone and visa versa, so it is important the correct one is flashed. I myself would flash freeza's one that has with or without Hboot 1.58 but the latest firmware 2.89, but you need to be S-Off for the bootloader to flash the radio, those that are S-ON need to relock the bootloader and run the 2.89 RUU exe like you did from windows. The files in the post I gave you above are radios only, that is why I posted it for you to see.

These are Freeza's with or without the HBoot, Freeza's thread with the new firmware forget the second file that says it will write the s-on for anyone s-off, thus is not the case

About SuperSU...I have the paid version of SuperSU, however since I put my phone my back to stock, it's no longer in my apps. I know I can go back to the Play Store and re-download it to my phone. Is this okay?

Forgot to update: RUU process was completed and am now on hboot 1.58 and on radio 2.89. Phone is LOCKED, but is s-off. Moving forward with re-rooting the phone.
