Help Potential Moment Customer ?'s

I'm currently a Sprint Customer using the Nextel Blackberry and looking at switching to an Android phone, this is a work phone. I'll probably get some flack for dropping the direct connect but I'm hoping people will get over it since the nextel devices are crap.

Anyways I'm in love with Android and I'm really really leaning towards the Moment out of whats currently available. I like the screen & keyboard and I'm not concerned about the bulk much.

I've seen the announcement of the new 4G EVO phone and what sucks for me is while my city has 4g at the moment when I zoom in on the coverage map both my home and my work are in tiny little pockets of non coverage. I doubt that will change so as much as I'm interested in the 4g I'm not counting on having coverage.

That only leaves the Nexus for whenever that may be coming out and I'm not a huge fan of the design of it, but it does look like a nice phone. While a physical keyboard is not a must for me thats one thing that is pushing me towards the Moment.

Obviously I'm going to get a biased answer in the Moment forums but am I crazy for going with the Moment when newer stuff will be available soon?

I know 2.1 should be available for it soon. Once they push that update out, do you think Sprint/Samsung will still continue to support the device update-wise? I know it's not really an old phone but I'd like to feel like it's not a mistake to go with it.

Any advice/opinions welcome. Thanks

I've had both the hero and the moment. Currently moment user. I love the hero interface. I traded it because of the physical keyboard on the moment. That was a huge mistake. I never use the physical keyboard. I found a keyboard called swift and that's all I use. I do like the faster processor but if I could I would go back to the hero.

The hero interface is what they call Sense right? I really hadn't even been looking at the Hero at all. The Hero doesn't have an amoled screen like the Moment does it? That was one of the reasons I kinda discounted it. And I figured the stock android was pretty modifiable to make it look/feel like the sense if I really wanted to, but maybe that assumption is wrong?

Here is the honest truth:

If you want/need a physical keyboard, get a Moment. I type many texts and e-mails from my phone (and I use full words and sentences) so having a physical keyboard was a necessity. I tried all the soft keyboard apps out there and I still haven't found one as accurate and as fast as the hardware keyboard.

If you think a soft keyboard would be sufficient, I would hold off and get an HTC Evo when it comes out in a couple months.

HTC Heros in my opinion are a little lacking in UI response, you should never have to wait on your UI especially when you aren't multitasking. If you plan on having the phone for two years, you should probably get the fastest one out there. Doesn't make much sense buying last years tech.

Well I suppose you could think since you're getting positive feedback for both the Hero and Moment you could assume both phones would be good no matter your decision. But id say if you start to lean towards the Hero that you might as well go for the Evo as id assume it'd be a better full touchscreen phone with 4G capabilities that are potentially going to grow.

But in my opinion, if you know how to type fast then you can't beat a physical keyboard. I own a Moment and I love the keyboard after I got used to it. Of course if you read through just a few threads on this forum you'd see that the Moment is far from perfect, but I love the phone itself and I somehow believe 2.1 will help make this phone as good as it should be.

(I don't own and haven't used a Hero, so these are just my opinions)

Granted, depending on the soft keyboard you use, you may adopt it very quickly... but then again coming from the BB you may not.

How long do you have before you are going to come over to Android? If it is within a month, then I highly recommend that you wait until the 2.1 update hits both phones. Once the Moment has native CDMA-supported software, it is expected that all of the "bug" argument are going to be flushed. However, it is coming from Samsung... which I why I suggest waiting to see rather than jumping in and expecting it to be great

If you can wait longer, then hold out for the N1 or the Evo. When they are release, the N1 will likely have most of its possible bugs worked out (from its experience on other networks) and the Evo will just be starting out and will likely have a few issues. If you are willing to hold out until those phone are released, I suggest waiting until about a week after the Evo comes out to hear about its problems (to see if they are acceptable). If you can't wait that long, then at least wait until 2.1 hits the Hero and Moment.

I'm not going to tell you to jump one way or the other yet, because the 2.1 update is a huge variable. It's a distinct possibility that it will bog down the Hero considerably, but then again it may not. It's a distinct possibility that it may make the Moment run blissfully, but then again it may not. Sorry to say, but like a magic 8-ball my advice is that the future is too fuzzy, try again later.

My opinion on the N1 is that it's too big, it may be a good size for you but the Hero fits in my pocket perfectly, even with an Otterbox Commuter case. If you can wait and you want a bigger screen/ faster processor that the N1 or EVO has, I would say wait. But for the price it's hard to beat the Hero, plus when 2.1 does finally drop it should be really awesome, rather than just awsome as how I see the Hero now.

The one thing that troubled me about the N1 is the reports of the screen cracking from the inside without anyone even dropping them and HTC's response was to not put it in your pocket. I havn't seen much about it lately so maybe they fixed the prob or it really was just isolated instances.

I've got a BB 8350i. The keyboard on it is ok/decent. My big complaint is with the software on the phone isn't all that great. I use the google mail app on it vs the blackberry stuff since my company uses Google Apps with our domain anyways.

I'd like to move to a different sooner than later, but I'm willing to be patient until summer at the latest if it makes a difference? Though with the current cost of the Moment I'm tempted to get it now and then 12 months from now switch to something else if I just hate it.

I guess I'll at least wait until 2.1 for the 2 current and see how favorably people end up liking them.

It now seems to me like for alot of people the physical keyboard isn't as big a deal.

Yeah, I honestly do not use my physical keyboard very often ever since I downloaded Swype. I cannot handle typing on a physical screen, and if it wasn't for swype I would only use the physical keyboard. But luckily the technology has caught up to those of us with hands too big to peck at the screen keyboard.

Yeah I've seen that. I'd rather get away from Nextel if I can . That'll be great for some guys at work that can't get away from it though.

I guess one last question would be can you carry any of these phones in your pocket and not mess the screen up? Or do you need to have a case of some sort?

As long as you carry it in a pocket by itself... yeah you're perfectly fine with the Moment. Though you do not want to carry it in a pocket with keys

I can't vouch for the Hero though. I don't know the tendencies of its trackball.

No problems with the trackball, even after carrying the Hero in my pocket since October. Not sure if it's something about the design of the Hero's trackball or what, but it doesn't seem to collect lint like the BB trackballs apparently do. I haven't seen a single report about a person's trackball sticking on the Hero (yet).

Same thing with the screen though, make sure the phone's in there alone. No coins or keys. The screen on the Hero is extremely scratch resistant though, but over time it will develop very tiny scratches that are really only noticeable in the sun, as I'm sure any touchscreen will if there's no screen protector on it.

Carried my Hero in my pocket for over a month naked without problems, but I never put anything in the same pocket. Now I have an Otterbox case and love it.

HTC's comment about not carrying the N1 in your pocket would worry me a bit though.
