Which phone?

ok first off let me say i have NEVER owned a cell phone haven't had much of a need for it however now i am no longer working from home so i need a phone and well im personally not a fan of apple so no iphone :x im looking currently at two phones both by Motorola the Devour and the Droid. i hope someone can give me some insight on which to get Thank you for reading and a BIG thanks for responding

First off, welcome to AF.

Without knowing more about what you plan to use your phone for, it would be very hard for anyone to tell you which phone is more right for your needs. How much multi-media do you plan to use on the phone? Is price a factor in your purchase? What's more important: performance or battery life? Questions like this only you can answer.

Having said that, they are very similar phones in form factor, however the Droid specs out higher than the the Devour. Among other things, it has a better CPU and a more recent OS than Devour.

I would go with the Droid; the screen is bigger and the specs on it look better. It also runs a more recent version of Android (2.0, soon 2.1) than the Devour (1.6).

I agree with Phydeux that it is hard to recommend something when we aren't sure what you want the phone for.

I'm going to make a couple of assumptions:
1. You want an android phone which is why you came to a website about android phones. If you just want a non-iPhone smartphone, check out the Blackberries, the Windows Mobile phones, or the Palm but I can't help you with those since I stopped looking at them once I decided to go android.

2. Since this is your first mobile phone, you plan on using it to keep in touch with whomever you were contacting while working at home and need it to be a good phone, not just an online toy or a development environment.

Given that, I would recommend the Devour. I see my Droid brothers groaning, but bear with me.

You probably expect your first mobile to act like a phone. The Devour is the most likely to do so as I've learned that the Blur interface has some little tricks that enable you to do voice dialing without a lot of customized gymnastics. Motoblur is also pretty friendly so if you just want to call, text, email chat with people, it will do a great job of it.

Of course I could be completely wrong and what you do is talk to your contacts a little bit while working, but you actually email them lots of documents and you might collaborate with them in an Exchange environment or even with Google Wave or something like that. In that case, you'll want the Droid because at this point it tethers when the Devour does not.

The larger screen and extra power are nice, but the Devour has a better keyboard. Ultimately, you'll have to spend some time with both phones and see which you enjoy using more. Both phones are great and you'll be happy with either one.

Next why are those the phones you are looking at? I would recommend an Eris, here is why:

1. Within a couple years there will be no physical keyboards, touchscreen phones with a keyboard are just to help people transition. If this is your first cell phone, why start using an outdated technology instead of just starting with a touchscreen only phone. Think of a touchscreen phone with a keyboard as a combo VCR and DVD player, you still see them occasionally, but who still uses VHS? VHS = physical keyboard, DVD = touchscreen keyboard

2. My wife has the Eris. It was her first smart phone and she loves it. I have the Droid because after having iPhones for so long I needed the performance of the Droid even though I never open the keyboard. I like the look and feel of the Eris much better just not the performance.

3.Her Eris is running Android 2.1, my Droid is only running 2.0.1, took about 10 minutes to upgrade and much easier to do than on the Droid.

4. If you can wait a little while the Nexus 1 and HTC incredible will both be out soon for Verizon, both of which are better than anything Verizon currently offers if you want an awesome phone with all the power you could need.

I highly doubt keyboards will go the way of the dinosaur. You can't beat ergonomics, and having a physical qwerty has many many many advantages over not having one. Your agrument is completely flawed and useless.

To the op:

Don't forget to look at other carriers. If you really want an end all be all device, look at the evo4g. It is hands down the best phone on the planet. And regardless of what you hear about sprint, and these rumor spreading no gooders, sprints coverage is fantastic. They have led the industry since the digital age and haven't stopped.

Yeah that would help. If he just wants voice, the he should get a jitterbug. =D

The one thing that kills me about the moment though, no friggin accessories. I am an extreme power user, so battery doesn't last long. With my mogul and tp, I had spares everywere. One in the car, one at work, two at home. Charged and ready to go. Just swap out the battery when needed and blam. I even carried a spare battery in my wallet >.<

If you can wait and go without a physical keyboard, I'd get the HTC Incredible (if it's as good as the leaked specs say it is) Otherwise, you will not be disappointed with the Motorola Droid.
