iPhone Coming To Verizon This Year

Two New IPhones Coming; One May Be Aimed at Verizon - WSJ.com

Interesting...was enamored with the iPhone a few months ago, but I'm more than happy with Android. Apple has a lot of ground to cover with their next phone to recapture android converted users.

Just when I leave the iPhone, this happens!

But seriously, it's a rumor. I'll believe it when I have the Verizon iPhone. In my hands. In a Verizon Store. With a few Victoria Secret models. In their lingerie. Out on a date. After I won the $1 billion Powerball lotto.

For F's sake- This is not going to happen. Get over it. It would make business sense for Apple to go to another carrier, but they're not going to do it. AT&T and Apple are together. For life. This is a rumor to get people to doubt going Android on Verizon. That's it.

I'm thinking Verizon might be a good buy- N1, Incredible, Droid, iPhone rumors, could be good for a nice return.

You're right, it isn't confirmed, but here's the thing. It's the Wall Street Journal. It isn't some kid on the forum that says, "My dad's friend is a tester and heard so and so," or some start-up wordpress tech blog. When the WSJ say that they have info from "people briefed by the company," that means they are huge equity stakeholders, analysts, strategic consultants, etc that have been briefed on Apple's operations.

I don't post random inane rumors on here and think that aside from a press release, the WSJ is as real as it gets.

+1

The Wall Street Journal is a quantum leap in credibility as compared to just about any other news organ in the world, not to mention silly online forum and blog rumors. I've been reading the WSJ for decades.

If they said it might happen, there is one hell of a good chance that it's going to happen.

As a PR person, I like to THINK I can tell the BS from the real news and personally I think this is something that will happen, however not this year...or at least not by September. Christmas maybe but Apple and AT&T are no longer on an EXCLUSIVE deal. That ended at the beginning of the new year. This obviously means that Apple can do what ever they want, and that is usually World Domination. Apple will move to Verizon first because they have the second largest market share next to AT&T and Android poses the biggest threat to the iPhone.

Apple doesn't send BS news releases to the WSJ or Business week to drum up unneeded attention. They send them to these papers and news organizations when they have real news that is the truth. Yes the 'rumors' sat September, but WE were also told the Droid was getting 2.1 back in January. It will happen, just not by September.

I am a long time iPhoner and I switched to the Moto Droid because Verizon had the Droids I was looking for and I will never go back the iPhone. I love Android and everything that comes with it..but one thing is certain, Apple will try their damndest to out sell and out market their products, but so will Google.

Well, also, Verizon will do their best to have devices that cut a broad swath in the marketplace.. the acquisition of the iPhone, previously only available through AT&T, seems to the great advantage of both Apple and Verizon.

I could have sworn Verizon had the largest market share in the U.S.--especially after the acquisition of Alltel.

It's going to happen. The WSJ reporter who wrote the story is the same reporter who leaked the iPad (before it was called the iPad but, ya know..).

Here's my take... Apple is really worried about Android and they are now forced to offer the phone to multiple carriers in the U.S. They know the Nexus One and Incredible are in the pipeline and just about to be announced so... they sue HTC thinking that could slow things up, announce (by leaking to the WSJ) an iPhone for Verizon... they tease that it will be this year (which may or may not be true)... and they have some people, many probably, rethinking the Nexus One, HTC Incredible and Android generally. I say it's pretty slick of them.

Frankly, I've never bought an Apple product but I do own some of their stock, along with a more sizable holding of the GOOG.. that said, we really owe the iPhone some thanks. Phones have evolved more quickly with Apple in the game and competition benefits all of us... drives down prices, spurs innovation, etc.

All that noise and my bottom line is that I'm betting on Android and buying Android.

I think Apple is just as much to blame for trying to choke the life of the competition away and slow down evolution of the phones to Apple's pace. Thankfully they can't take down multiple targets all at once.

I can see the reasoning behind Apple opening pandora's box and unleashing the iPhone to other carriers. They know they continue to stick with AT&T two things will happen: AT&T will continue to pay out to Apple for exclusivity; Android phones on AT&T's competition will take over and flank Apple's iPhone from all sides then all is lost.

It's no longer logical to put all their eggs in one basket, they'll have to try to push their product into the entire market because the rules have changed; instead of people flocking to AT&T to get an iPhone, Apple has to get everyone to adopt an iPhone before the serious Android contenders penetrate the market.

Eh an apple tablet was bound to hit sooner or later. So that's not much credibility.

Good points ^^^.

This reporter, according to what I read, was spot on and first in predicting the Apple tablet and details about its announcement. (I didn't mean to imply that he knew the name "iPad" before anyone else.) I don't think the WSJ would have run the Verizon iPhone story without credible sources. The fact that they name the company manufacturing the phone and provide some other details tells me that they were given enough information to stake their reputation on the story. We really won't know for sure for a very long time but I've placed my bet on it being true.

If the iPhone does come to Verizon, it's great news for us unless the Verizon network is brought to its knees by data saturation. It's great news because hardware and service should be decoupled. This will benefit all of us in the long-run, I believe. As it is, I don't know how a carrier that sells Android devices can restrict a compatible Android device from its service. Expect the FCC to step in and say something like... if you allow the HTC Incredible than you need to also allow the CDMA Android Whatever because your claim that the network could be harmed by the phone doesn't hold water.

Well, wasnt going to post this because it's another one of those "I know someone who knows something" type of deal, but since this article came out i'm starting to beleive that what i heard is the real deal.

one of my clients (i'm an IT Consultant) owns a Verizon Retail store and is close friends with an Verizon Internal IT Tech who comes to his store to setup new displays, etc. When i was there during the final days of CTIA i was trying to poke and prod him about the Incredible, to which he genuinely knew nothing about, but he did offer up some little tidbit, prefacing by saying "I'm not supposed to say anything, but whatever, i dont care"

He said that his Verizon IT Guy had a phone that was registered on the 4G network, because certain testers had access to these 4G Towers. He showed him the browsing on his phone in direct comparison to the Droid on 3G and it was more than twice as fast...

I dont know if that rules out his credibility for the next tidbit, as i thought 4G wasnt even being rolled out until later on. But it sounds like there are towers up or the signal is flowin and only certain people have access..or he had a 4G demo phone...as i assume it's all new tech (new radio, frequency, etc). Anyways, I didnt question him on that because he had more to tell me..

which is..

that his Verizon IT guy told him the iPhone IS coming to Verizon and that he had seen renderings of the new iPhone. He was VERY specific in the detailing of the phone by saying it would be thinner than the existing one, and that it would be shorter but with the same screen size. THis would make basically cut off the bottom and top bits of the phone and make the phone an all touch phone or have some other "home" button somewhere else (or just smaller he wasnt sure) He said it was pretty damn slick looking.

He also said they're trying to get it out before Christmas and to use it as their launch phone for 4G. This is where it all started to make sense...

Can you imagine a 4G iPhone coming to Verizon before Christmas? It's like the ultimate motherload for a phone/wireless company. What better way to launch a phone/service? IT's perfect. It's Genius, and it's everything i would expect a Verizon/Apple to do.

I started looking up iPhone 4G Verizon images and started to find mockups and concept renderingsof a new iPhone and found something similar to what was described to him/me...

I'm sure you've seen this. But all this coming together just seems to make perfect sense. And my guy really wasnt nervous about telling me (for one he doesnt know i belong to a forum that likes to spread speculation) but he really beleived in what he was told..that was clear...and that the Verizon IT Guy was really nervous about leaking info to him....for obvious reasons.

ANwyays, just thought i'd share some speculation..it's the best i got with my contact....

I for one will buy the incredible when it comes out and if/when the iPhone comes out for Verizon... well... i'll reassess...

Phorts, great share. Do you consult for any one of the big three by any chance? I'm assuming the Verizon iPhone story was leaked to WSJ by some strat/IT consultants at M/B/B.

Not to sound like a conspiracy theorist but I betcha is was leaked from within Apple with absolute approval from higher ups. They'r concerned about Android and the Nexus One/Incredible release. If those phones take over Verizon, Apple has lost a golden opportunity. By leaking the iPhone/Verizon story, they've cast doubt in some people's minds about going Android now. Some will wait for the iPhone 4G.

FWIW, I've been watching CNBC during the day lately (work from home) and reports are that the Verizon CEO has an open door for the iPhone to be on the network, "but it was up to Apple". I think they may just be hammering out the details, but all the reports imply that "its still up in the air".

If it is in fact "smaller", it may suffer from the same reception problems on VZ as it does on AT&T.

Verizon has publicly put the ball in Apple's court for several months now.

I hope it's the 4G that is rumored to be announced tomorrow. I may switch after one year if it's true. I'll wait to see a manufacturer's rebuttal with Android.

The Nexus One is obsolete now. Bring on the rumors of the Shadow.

lol how's it obsolete? EVO is months away and nothing has even been announced for the iPhone 4G. With that said, I'm still looking forward to seeing the new iPhone OS.
