Root Droid Temperatures

Hello Everyone,

I am looking for some help with my droid. I currently have my droid running BB .9 and it has the Chevy LV 1ghz kernel although the main profile is set at 250/800 (OnDemand). The phone does have a case on it if anyone is wondering. From what I've been told my battery shouldn't be getting beyond 40 and yet when I browse the web, etc. it climbs steadily to 45 at times. What am I doing wrong? I'm worried that I'm damaging my battery and I"m trying to remedy the problem as soon as I can. What do you all suggest? Thank you so much and look forward to hearing your advice.

If you not try running ATK (advanced task killer) there maybe be processes in the background running. Also the phone will run warm when browsing. Anything that changes the screen images quickly will increase the heat. Also try turning the brightness down as well if you havent already.

Test out the theory... while browsing ... or driving with NAV on... watch the temp climb. Now pull the window shade down for a few a minute or so. Once you release it or pull it up.. notice the temp.... it should be much lower but start to climb immediately. Sometimes while driving I do this if I'm become suddenly uncomfortable with the temp on the phone and it actually works... lol.

The GPU voltage increase greatly due to the screens resolution and having to redraw more often due to increased activity warms things up a bit. When immobile it doesn't have to work as hard.


Also ditching the cover wont hurt...

I really wish people would stop advocating the use of task killers for every single little problem that arises around here. They are NOT the do-all/save-all solution to these problems. Some day someone is going to end up killing their phone because of what you recommend... so please, make sure you are recommending the right things.

Imagine, if you will, that you are using a public computer in a library, with 5 others. Now, someone else comes in wanting to use a computer, but there are none left. This person asks the one who has been there the longest to leave. They then collect their things and leave. This happens every time a new person comes in, unless someone leaves of their own volition.

This is android. There are 6 spots for programs, more for resident daemons. When a new program launches, android tells the program that was last used to "collect its things and leave," so to speak.

Now imagine that the new person takes their seat, and then muscles some of the other users out without letting them collect their things.

That person/program is a task killer. Instead of giving a process time to finish, the task killer rips the floor out from underneath it. Normally, this is okay, but there is a high chance for data loss or corruption. Also, it simply isn't needed. Unless you have a G1 or other phone with little RAM, android can handle things on its own.

Experiment with different ROMs, kernals, and speeds and you will find the combination that works best for you (been there, done that, still do that). Again, your current temps are not a major issue (if I remember correctly, my phone would heat up when stock - I just didn't know how to monitor it).

The case on your phone is probably contributing to the heat. Try taking it off for a day and see if it helps

Right now I'm messaging without my case on and I even put the highest oc at 550mhz. And yet its at 40 and will climb after I try browsing again

you should definitely try some different kernels

have you tried medium voltage kernels? Might work better doesnt make sense but some run cooler with medium

well herfe i am running chevys medium voltage kernel and the failsafe profile kicked in cause I'm at like 45 c

Just unrooted droid and it got up to 44-45 during browsing still, so now I'm really outta ideas. Any suggestions?

Fade... a less offensive path would have been to just post your quote. Instead of more or less attacking someone who's just trying to offer some advise. This is the first time I've ever heard of... or even the suggestion that a phone has been damaged by using a task killer.... but thanks for the heads up.

I'll tell you the one key factor that no one else here has yet. Or maybe it's not common knowledge... I don't know.

In any event: There are TWO variables you must account for when trying to determine how how your battery is running. Not just one. The first is battery temperature. This seems to be the number everyone follows as absolute law... but it isn't. The second, equally important, is ambient temperature.

Here is an example:


I could say that I have two batteries. One is running at 50 degrees c, the other only at 40c.

If you are only accounting for the first variable, the battery that is running at 50c would inevitably be the more concerning. But now what if I told you that the first battery is operating in an area where the ambient temperature is 48c whereas the second battery is in an area where the ambient temp is 22c.

Suddenly, you have a second variable. When viewed together, you will see that the second battery (running at 50c) is actually only 2c above ambient temperature. Not a very big deal. The other battery, however, is running 18c higher than ambient. That would be something to maybe worry about.

Not one single person on here who is giving you advice about what to do even knows just how hot your battery is running. See where I am going with this?

Now... with that said, do you know what the ambient temperature is of the room you are using your phone in when it is coming up to 50c?

The phone never makes it to 50C it was sitting around 41-42 and at times it can get to 45 or so.

I wouldn't even be worried about 45 degrees. 40-45 is where mine runs when I'm using it.

Also remember... if you have it plugged in, it will run hotter. Charging batteries always run hotter.

Ok well the only reason I was concerned in the first place was cause Fabolous made a comment that his didnt top 40 C. But he also has a naked droid so I'm assuming my case might add a couple degress on. But if you're is running the same and you arent concerned then I'm good.
