hi all, my samsung galaxy ace keeps turning my text messages into multimedia messages when i go past a certain ammount of text characters, maybe around 200 i think. is there a way to stop it from doing this or is this the max ammount of characters before it defualts to multimedia messaging ??

That is the maximum amount of characters you can use for normal text in the default app.
Search at play store, there may be some other apps that allow more than 200 characters in a text, i think gosms and handcent allow that, i am not sure though, i am rooted and i use a custom app for this so i don't have this limitation.

Have you actually tried this?
Are you using ACE?

i am asking because i don't have the option to increase it to 900, 200 is max for me.

hi yes i have an ace , and have the option to change this, when you goto messages, press the left bottom button by the middle front square, select settings, it should then show a list, select text message limit, a box should pop up saying 200 with + above this and - below this number with cancel - set, can you see this?

I see 'select text message limit' but when I tap it nothing happens. I am on 2.3.6

Did you actually try it out?? That really surprizes me. So you're sure that a text message won't turn into multimedia message after changing this limit?? With my carrier it doesn't work like that for sure.

Apologies - I was wrong.

Sent a very long text and didn't see the usual message that it had turned into a multimedia message, so I'd assumed it had worked.

However, on checking my balance today, I was obviously charged for it.

Hi All,

please be aware that if you go over your text character limit it will then be processed by your provider as a multimedia text messgae and they WILL charge you, mine is 40p a message which is the same as a picture message, i sent 8 and saw them on my bill at

I'll try to elaborate it more Marcha, you are absolutely right.
shannianni, the 900 setting you are talking about does not refer to 900 characters in a text message, that setting refers to the number of messages/conversation you can keep under a thread/contact.
For example, i send a message to you and you reply me back and we keep on a long conversation, now the 900 means that i can store a maximum of 900 messages in my messaging app under the contact shannianni, when the limit is reached the older messages will keep getting deleted from the thread in order to make space for new ones. It does not refer to the character limit at all.
