Tether without service?

Alright everyone, this may be a completely stupid question, but it has been enticing me for a while. I currently have a Samsung Galaxy Player, which is essentially like an iPod: It can download apps, all that good stuff, but it can't make calls or texts without an app like Google Voice. Now, here is the question: Because I don't have phone service, can I tether to make my own wifi signal? (If any of you could also somehow get this to work like a phone, that would be great.) The Galaxy player is rooted, so that won't be an obstacle. I do have a regular phone, but I have the galaxy player for fun. Basically I need the tether because there is no wifi that I can connect to in my school. Thanks in advance.

Ok, just to be clear you're trying to tether FROM the Galaxy player, right?

Does it have 3g/4g/LTE some form of mobile data (besides wifi)? If it does, you should be able to do this. If not, there is no internet connection you could share with the the hotspot.

Nope, no data connection. And yes, I'm trying to tether from the galaxy player. Problem is, there are 2 wifi connections at my school- one is open but has a portal, which none of the students know the username and password to get by, and the other is password protected.

I'm just looking for a way to get wifi in school, so achieving that without tethering also works here.

Yeah. I figured that was the answer I would get. But the question is, does anyone know any way to get wifi in my situation?

I understand that you don't like the answer. And that you prefer to ignore it. But ignoring it, and asking the same question again and again won't change that answer:

you need a mobile connection on a device to be able to create a 'portable' WiFi signal from that device to another internet device, laptop, PC, etc.

If you are asking what I think you are asking, no one here is going to, in a public forum, instruct you on how to hack into your school's wifi. I'm sure that you can find that type of information somewhere on the internet, but a forum like this isn't the place to ask. Now, if you already had the wifi connection, it would be quite easy to get you a tethering app.

sorry for mega bump but im looking for a way to tether internet from my xperia Z without service. long story short i need this layout

router -> xperia Z -> 3ds

i need to tether wifi without turning off my phone wifi while tethering but every tethering app so far turns off wifi to tether. once a long time ago on a custom rom for the xperia play i was able to do this with the native tethering option. it tethered and left the wifi on.

Basically NO. Can't you connect the 3DS to the router? The phone can't be connected by WiFi, and then share its WiFi back out as a hotspot for other devices

Obviously you can do...but that needs carrier service.
3G/4G data > Xperia Z > 3DS.
