Looking to cool things down

Wifey is concerned about our 4 year old playing with her hot Rezound. Are there any cases that dissipate the heat better than a naked Rezound? Or does one of the extended batteries alleviate the issue? Any help would be appreciated.

depending on the form factor of the phone, you can get otter boxes, shields and whatnot
check out your model on amazon im sure you can find something, you could also under clock the device so it doesn't have to run so hot.

As stated above, just do some research on your phone, you can find batteries AND cases on amazon or any site like that for that matter, i'm sure any durable case possibly one with a rubber piece will decrease the expulsion of heat, but id also again suggest Under-clocking the device so that the proccesser doesn't get so warm.

I thought it would be easier to ask, as I assumed heat was a fairly common issue. Researching each case and battery and comparing them to each other in relation to this issue can take a long time.

I would also flash the Global Mode RUU leak, it has a tendency to run much cooler. This is getting back more the issue at hand, not if it can cause injury, but why it is getting so hot and and the real temperatures involved. The heat typically comes from the battery, what kind of temps are you seeing? In excess of 130F internal battery temp? if so, I would factory default and see if the problems continue, if they do I would seek a replacement.

Rooting isn't an option. It's my wife's phone after all. I'm guessing temps are running 110 to 120. Nothing extrodinary.

Nothing I said had anything to do with rooting, voiding the warranty, installing custom ROMs, or anything like that... The Global Mode Leaked RUU is an official, digitally signed firmware package from HTC, it just has not been officially accepted by Verizon as of yet. It does not void the warranty and requires no special installation procedures other than a reset holding a couple buttons down. It will do a factory reset in the process though.

110-120 is a little on the high side, but well within the normal range of the Rezound under heavy use (gaming, mobile hot spot, etc).

Thanks, I'll look into that and weigh the pros to doing the factory reset.

Mobile Hotspot is the official VZW app and is a paid feature with most plans (some newer family plans include it at no cost though). In order to get WiFi tether to work bypassing the VZW hotspot, you must root the device.

I have my Rezound + Extended battery in an Otterbox case (with back skeleton left out so that extended battery fits). It would feel pretty hot with the VZW-branded case, but with the rubber back of the Otterbox, it just feels warm, so this might be a good option for your wife. Plus it won't matter if your 4-year-old accidentally drops it.

As far as heat goes, keep in mind that putting a hot phone into a case will only make the phone inside the case hotter, reducing the life of your battery and phone as it will not as effectively dissipate heat.

Considering that people change phones every 2 years or so it may not be a problem, I have not seen actual data on heat vs. phone life, but it's a simple fact of life with electronics.

No worries, it's not an iPhone. You can replace the battery and cheaply too.

So far I'm thinking of either a tpu case from Diztronic or the hard shell case/holster combo. The triangular texture of that one gives it more surface area and more surface area makes for more efficient heat dissipation.

Years ago my sister was worried about plastic baby bottles harboring germs and was desperately looking for glass bottles. Glass is actually more porous than plastic, but since neither are inherently bad did I go and try to convince her otherwise? No, I helped her find glass bottles. (Oh, and I would have been faulted, in real life, for telling my sister that there were no problems with plastic baby bottles!)

Feel free to offer your advice, wisdom, experience and solutions, but it will behoove you to not take offense if someone chooses not to listen.

@T35RK ... my handset does get quite toasty. I'm not concerned about my skin and being burned, but I am concerned about the health of the battery at the higher temperatures. I am also monitoring the thread for an answer!

Thanks. Out of curiosity, what temps are you seeing? A recent lg Lucid that I had would get to 130

I haven't been tracking the temperature lately (I did a factory reset after ICS and never reloaded the batter widget) when I was monitoring it I would top 110 quite often ... it's amazing how hot it can get while streaming videos!

As for tablets ... which size are you interested in? The Thrive is 10" and the Nexus is 7". While the 7" is great for my mom who bought a tablet to read on and play Words with Friends and the like; the 10" is preferable for me (I edit pictures and read PDF construction drawings) and my daughter who uses it as a "Gameboy" of sorts! I haven't done any tablet research since buying the Thrive last Christmas season. I do use the full size ports that both the Thrive and my Acer Iconia offer, and that's important to me. That may not be so important to you, so it's up to you to do that kind of research. Good luck with your decisions!

Even if you don't believe it's unsafe in the first place or whether or not you think the child should be using the phone anyway is neither here nor there (FWIW, my 4 year old uses my phone all the time). t35rk has asked us a reasonable question about how to make the phone safer for his child to use.

If the OP thinks the phone is getting too hot, that should be good enough for us. So, either answer the actual question or don't, any other commentary isn't needed. Our rules are quite clear about that.

Lets move on and try to find a workable solution please.
