Root Quick question before I root please

First timer here.

I'm following the guide on this sight and very first thing in red is to back up all settings, etc.. Is there any king of settings I need to save with respect to the provider (Virgin Mobile) or is that info safe? Also will the new ROM pick up these settings or do I need to manually enter them somewhere?

Thanks,
Ryan

backup all your apps and progress (game progress for ex) you can do this with titanium backup (play store). when you flash a rom/root, your phone will still be activated and all your vm data will be the same as it was before... so you will be able to make calls/ text/ surf the web without having to save anything... just backup all your apps

I have to second that. I put off buying titanium for the longest time just because I couldn't see paying the 6 or 7 bucks for an app. But let me tell you it was the best purchase I've made as a rooted user. It's easy to say the apps are free so you'll re-download, but it's SO NICE to push one button and have every app restored in one process, with all the settings/progress the way you left them. Titanium Free is good and does the job, but only restores one app at a time. Pro gets you batch restore as well as a bunch of cool features I ended up using a lot too. I even have it do an automatic backup of everything every day at 3am so everything stays current.

I had only a couple apps so no big deal at this point but I will look into getting titanium for future use. IMO 6 or 7 bucks is a no brainer if it makes life easier and saves me a bunch of time. My rooting was successful (yay!) but I'm just running stock ROM at this point. If I had Titanium and flashed a different ROM would it restore all my apps etc. just as I left them in the new ROM?

OT: This is sweet! Got wifi hotspot setup on my newly rooted phone and my (new today) Nexus 7 tethered to it nicely. It feels like Christmas morning, I have so much to play with I don't know what to do first! ... root the Nexus I guess :D

explain please... been through most roms for the evo v and used titanium every time.. no problems with restoring and apps ran exactly from where i left off...

That may be true with games but I've had issues with restoring data because a lot of times system and utility apps change version between different roms. That's why even with user apps you should make sure that you have the latest versions before backing up and restoring. Ymmv.
