I was at the footy earlier and tried to use 3g or whatever was available to go on the net. It wouldnt work. It made me realise that there should be a symbol in the notification bar that tells you what radio type the phone has access to, and if none are available there should be a symbol letting you know.

I've not had this phone long but when I've used mobile data before a symbol has appeared. But I'd like to see exactly what's available even when the phone isn't using it.

So is there an app that can do this?

if you select the network type as "gsm+wcdma auto", it shoudl automatically select whichever data type is available. you dont need an additional app which would to the same thing, imho. but do mind it that being on the auto mode would mean that your phone keeps switching to the best data type available thereby consuming more battery power...

I do have my phone set to GSM / WCDMA auto, so yes I believe the phone will automatically switch to the faster connection. But I'd like to know what's available even when the phone isn't using it.

Does 'mobile network' mean EDGE and 3G? GPRS as well? Because although very slow, GPRS has far greater coverage than 3G, yes?

WCDMA is basically 3G, GSM is basically GPRS.

GPRS does have greater coverage but is, as you said, considerably slower.

So, the phone uses the fastest radio type available... if 3G/EDGE aren't available, then it should revert to using GPRS, right?

I know it's slow but it's still useable - I was using it on my old phone to read reviews about the DHD before I bought it!

There must be a way of finding out exactly what's available - like I said in my original post, I was trying to use the net and (although I had very good 'normal' signal) I couldn't. I accept that the high speed services aren't deployed everywhere... but the phone should have reverted to GPRS or something.

You can't search. Your phone will automatically pick the best one it can find and use it. If the phone lets you pick or see the available networks, then it will constantly just popup giving you options to pick and that and that just not going to work. If you have good signal then most likely you were on GSM as 3G doesn't give great network coverage, hence the very good signal you have

I understand that - I'm not saying that I want the phone to ask me what type to use, just that it tell me the fastest type available at that point in time.

Like you say, I was on GSM - but shouldn't that allow me to download data via GPRS?

no reason why gprs shouldnt allow you to download, and if you select gsm/wcdma auto option your phone automatically selects the best option available. if you are unable to see 3G or E or H symbols on your phone while having data connection on, you may want to switch over to gsm only option which would tell your phone to use only gsm i.e. gprs data network. and conversely, if you do see any of the three symbols above, you might want to switch over to WCDMA only option. sometimes the phone keeps switching between gsm/wcdma under the auto option causing delays in data transmission and perhaps you experienced that...

Thanks. I'll try that next time. Does a 'G' symbol appear if the phone is using GPRS? My phone was just saying that there was no internet connection available.

And the signal bar refers to the GSM signal strength right? Would be kinda cool to see signal strength for 3G etc. :)

The signal bars are the signal strength of 3g/gsm.

3g is just a better type of signal, so you have one or the other in most cases.

Hey I am from Trinidad I just wanna know if i have an unlimited network package but the signal network signal always on e for edge and then i went in the settings and change mobile network to gsm/wdmca (auto) and an h signs appears as my new network signal and its faster does it effect your unlimited package?

If you have unlimited data, the speed at which you are getting your data should not make any difference :)
