Will Divx be my Hero?

Divx playback on the desire sounds like hardware decoding. As far as I know the Hero has no such hardware support, and according to the folks at coreplayer, the reason video playback sucks so bad on Hero is due to android 1.5 having no built-in codecs and no api to directly run additional codecs directly on the hardware. Any divx codec has to go through java which uses up a lot of overhead.

I'm hoping they improve the video api in 2.1 enough so that developers like the coreplayer guys can make a better player. There's no reason why the Hero hardware can't decode divx with the proper codecs seeing how 5 year old devices running WM can do it just fine.

I don't watch many videos on my hero, but I did once compare .avi playback between SD cards. Using a class 6 got rid of all the lag issues I had with the card that came with the phone. So, at least in my case, it was the card's fault rather than the phone's.

That's not to say that the hero wouldn't benefit from improved codec support, of course.
