Just popped by the carphonewarehouse. They claim they have loads of Desires in Stock. They let me have a play with one. Dear me what a phone! Sleek, great display, comfy in the hand and super quick. I'm so tempted. Trying to hold out for a 4.3" HTC android phone but don't know if I'm strong enough :) Didn't ask about tariffs. But anyone interested at looking at one, or even buying, you can head over there.

Just FYI however - CPW aren't selling the Desire on T-Mob at the moment.

Seems there is a problem with the Desire picking up message settings from the SIM card with T-Mobile SIMs. I suspect this to be the 'firmware' problem that T-Mobile were harping on about.

As a result "to ensure a great customer experience" (pff!), CPW have withdrawn the Desire on T-Mobile.

Despite the fact that you can manually input the number for the message centre yourself. AND that there's already a FW update out for it.

I suspect a T-mobile Desire will have these settings in the ROM, where as sim-free will need to pull this from the SIM card.

The synic in me would say perhaps T-mobile have exclusivity on their network for now, and so you can only get one for T-mobile from them direct. Either that or T-mobile has demanded CPW stop selling it - there are still a number of phones you cant get on T-mobile except from T-mobile. Like the Samsung Galaxy Portal.

I picked one up from CPW yesterday. Really impressed with the phone although the service wasn't the best but I think that was partly due to not taking a contract or their insurance.

You mean their customer service? The guy was ok with me, probably because he tried to tell me about android and the desire, ended up me telling him about android forums, and a few more things about android he didn't realise!

Btw did you have to buy an orange PAYG sim for

Just to follow up on my earlier post - just phoned CPW, and they reckon that the Desire has gone back to HTC to try to 'correct' the problem with the T-Mobile SIMs, and it could be a month or longer before they get them back in stock on T-Mobile. The guy I spoke to simply suggested I go direct to T-Mobile.

They still have the thing for sale on both VodaPants and Orange however.

Haha, poor guy you just lost him a load of commission!
The guy I saw in CPW told me they don't earn commission. This has been confirmed by my friend who knows someone who works there.
Poor guys. What a shit job.

I had a really helpful guy help me.

I know Orange has poor reception but they DO have Orange Wednesdays and they've always treated me well. So I stuck with them.
24 month contract *wince*
500 mins
unlim text
unlim internet (500mb FUP)
unlim calls to Magic numbers
unlocked phone

Ring them to confirm it tho, nothing to lose!

I rang up, and got nowhere with an Indian call centre. So i tried again this time explicitly to get someone in this country. Guy told me he made a note on my system to ensure i never got charged for going over 1GB, and like i said my average has been nearly double that since and no extra charge, including heavy tethering over Xmas.
