Sprint getting LG Optimus G

The lack of enthusiasm/participation in this thread about this phone is really making me lean towards getting the Note 2, but I still think it's worthy of discussing the details that were revealed today.

Sprint, AT&T getting LG Optimus G

I'm starting this thread primarily to discuss the Optimus G on Sprint. Sprint is getting the 13MP version of the Optimus G.

On top of that, both Sprint and ATT seemed to have persuaded LG to add a microSD slot, which is a huge plus! The battery still seems to be embedded (non-removable), so that's a downer...but, if somehow that has changed as well, I may just be giving the Optimus G a good look, prior to getting the Note 2.

I am leaning heavily toward the Note 2 but I must admit this phone is giving me something to think about. If they do indeed add an SD card for sprint, that is a huge plus. But as you point out the non-removable battery is a major drawback.
Having never had a phone with a non-removable battery what do you do when it wont charge adequately anymore? Do you have to send it in for replacement or is that a store thing they can do?

We'll see what happens. The "Nexus" rumors are swirling like crazy, so the Optimus G may actually be introduced as the next Nexus phone. It would seem extremely odd to me, if Sprint and ATT released both the Optimus G and the Nexus Optimus (based on the Optimus G).

There have been other Nexus phones with removable batteries, so maybe that's another stipulation that Google has placed as far as device creation (to be considered for the Nexus line).

It'd be hard to ignore a Nexus Optimus G with 32gb internal, microSD slot, & removable battery. On top of that, a Nexus phone, which would ensure quicker updates to the newest Android OS. Because of all these rumors, I've held back my plans on pre-ordering whichever device is released first.

that really sucks, I thought for sure this was coming to Verizon, since LG already released it in Asia, where CDMA is dominant, and the CPU has an LTE chip built in. (plus I ditched Sprint for Verizon this year... )

Adding the micro-SD card slot means that either LG is paying Microsoft royalties, or they will be the next one Microsoft goes after. (SD cards come formated by default as FAT, this means LG has to add the FAT FS to the system, as Google does not include it to avoid the patents that microsoft holds). This is the reason why the Nexus phones do NOT have SD card slots (anymore).

As for the non-removable battery, I am also upset by this, as I have not owned an Android phone yet that I have not purchased an extended battery for, nor have I owned an Android phone yet that has not had it's battery maximum charge capacity decrease by 60% before my contract was up (allowing me to buy a new phone subsidized, which I will continue to do as long as I cannot get a discount to my monthly bill for buying a phone outright).

Also not happy they went with a smaller image sensor on the camera to "save space" as good as they say it is for those that have used it, anyone who knows anything about cameras knows a "good" quality larger image sensor will ALWAYS provide better images than an equal or even moderately better, smaller image sensor..

Other than that, this phone is freaking awesome.

The possibility of my getting this phone died when it was announced that Sprint would have the exact model that was released in Korea, but in case there are any people interested, it'll be $199:

if this phone had a better camera, i'd buy it in a heartbeat. i even prefer lg's UI over htc and samsung... unfortunately, it looks like they've decided to play the deceitful megapixel-number-game rather than using a quality sensor and lens. i have a feeling that this phone's camera will be it's achilles heel, otherwise a superior phone imo. at this point, i'd sacrifice all of the lg's advantages to go with the much better camera on the evo 4g lte instead.

benchmark results from the Linpack benchmark. All the results posted are from the Sprint Optimus G and they're above the Note 2 (listed at the bottom of the screen).

Do you mean the overall UI or just the surface level homescreen skin?

With the non-removable battery and no SD card, it's definitley not superior to the Note 2.

i meant the overall UI. agree 100% that the note 2 is way better imo (if you like the size)! it's also $300 vs $200 (not a perfectly fair comparison but worth the extra $ imo) i didn't realize that it was being released tomorrow!!! that's why i said "at this point"... i was assuming it wasn't coming for a while .

i'd have to play with the note2 and see some thorough camera comparisons before i call it my favorite, looks like a winner though.

Technically, for Sprint, it's releasing on Thursday. Tomorrow is just the general US announcement. But Sprint already advertised it as the "first" quad-core phone w/ LTE on Sprint, so that means it has to be released prior to the Optimus G's 11/11 release date.

If you take a look at the Note 2 forums, there are a bunch of good discussions going on. At a mall near my work, they even had a Samsung booth where I was able to show the size (in my small-medium sized hands). My hands are closer to smaller size than medium, so I was a little worried about it...but, in comparison to when I tried to wrap my hands around the Note 1...it's WAY more comfortable. Also a nice tidbit that I thought was wrong is that he Optimus G on sprint is a worldphone . soon enough photon q won't be the only worldphone available on sprint
