Q about $30/mo 100min. Walmart plan: What is "new customers only?"

Hello T-Mobile users! Believe it or not, I'm thinking about moving to T-Mobile's prepaid $30 data plan from Walmart and have a couple questions. I tried ordering the prepaid SIM card online tonight but it looks like the previous owner in this house had a T-Mobile account so I'm going to have to call in to get it cleaned up.

My question is this: What does it mean by new customers only on the plan? Because this address was registered to a previous account, am I ineligible now? I bet not, but just want to make sure my bases are covered.

Also, if I order another SIM card in a few months for my wife's phone to make the switch, will that not count as new customers only since we're both at the same residence? I'm thinking about bringing my whole family over as contracts expire if all goes well with T-Mo over the next few months.

I could be wrong but I don't think your address would have anything to do with it. So you're saying when you tried ordering the sim online they would not let you because of your address? Did you try ordering from T-Mobile or WalMart?

Do you already have a GSM phone? If you don't have a T-Mobile account already you should be able to just get the sim from T-Mobile for that plan and put it in your phone. You then activate it and you're all set. No need to go through WalMart. That's what I did using a Galaxy S2 I bought off Craigslist.

If you do have to call T-Mobile, make sure they set you up on the $30 plan. I've seen others who called and were set up on the more expensive plans.

First, and from what others here have said, all "new customer" means is that you have to use a new sim card/set up a new account. Others here have claimed to have had a previous T-Mobile account, some even saying they managed to transfer their old T-Mobile number onto their new account.

Also, to expand on what Atmazzz said, you need to make sure you request the Walmart $30 plan if you have to call to set it up. You need to make sure you are clear, as there are two $30 plans and the other plan does not come with data but 1500 minutes or texts.

In my case, I tried to register online but had a problem, so I had to call. To get me on the Walmart plan, the phone tech set up the plan, then had to get her supervisor to actually put me on the $30 plan (since it is a Walmart or online only). It took a bit more time than I would have liked but I am on that plan, now I'm just waiting for them to transfer my old number from my previous carrier.

When you called into T-Mo for help with your activation problem, did it take very long or cause any problems? Based on a thread here they said just to call T-mo's back office # 800 672 5390 and they can fix it easily.

I'm having a debate of porting my number to GV or to T-Mobile. What do you guys think would be better?

I didn't have any problem. I think it originally took 5 minutes for her to activate the phone, though instead of keeping me on hold when she had her supervisor put me on the Walmart plan, she instead called me back. It was about 40 minutes before she called me back, though checking from my phone I was on the Walmart plan fairly quickly.

I already use Google Voice. I though about not transferring my number at all, just registering the new number on GV, but I use my mobile number for texts and am moving it for that reason. In your case, I'd probably transfer my number to GV. I also had them turn off my T-Mobile voicemail and will instead rely on GV.

I am also running a G2x on the tmobile $30/month plan for the past 4 months. I have had no issues. The setup was easy over the computer when i got my sim from the tmobile website. My friend did the same thing but had issues with his activation code. Called tmobile and they fixed it and got it running in a couple minutes on his Samsung Galaxy. I also set up the same plan for my little sister on her unlocked Iphone 4. The only issue there was that i had to cut the sim card down to micro size. Everything works great!! GREAT VALUE!! I wouldn't run a data plan if it cost me $50/month or more.. Everybody is always shocked at how much bang i get for so little bucks!! lol My brother is on tmobile post paid with the G2x also, pays almost $100 for his plan, and is throttled at 2gb down to EDGE/2G speeds.. while I get 5gb.. which i have only reached once my first month..

Thanks everyone! I got my registration kit last week and everything setup easy as pie online, no calls needed! Nw that I'm on this great plan, I just have questions about how to get VoIP calls working properly without tons of lag building up after the first minuteor two into a call.

Anyone have experience with sipdroid or groove ip on this prepaid plan? I have full bars of service on 4g and whether I'm outside or driving I get choppy and then laggy connection at best. I have played with a lot of settings too on both groove ip and sipdroid. Thanks again!

You are spot on! The SIM kit took about 4 days to arrive and after activating online the plan page showed the $30 plan as an option. Just bears that if you want to use voip calling it may not work very well. at least it's worth a try though!

Yes, you can activate the SIM online, and the $30 "Walmart" Plan will be one of the plan choices. Another thing to be aware of, T-Mobile ships a Standard (Mini) SIM, you will need to cut it down to a Micro Sim for it to work in the iPhone. If you don't feel comfortable cutting the SIM with scissors, you may want to buy a SIM card cutter (such as this one).

I added money after the the SIM was activated and I'd selected the plan.

hey i just got the activation kit and everything and im going to use in on my iphone 4. i activated it via online and i did choose the $30 walmart plan but it been 3 hours since i activated it and i still havent gotten the txt saying that everyting has been activated and also with the my phone #. how long did it take for you to get the txt saying it was activated?

I had to call the number, that showed on the screen, and activate it that way. My understanding is that the text should pop up fairly quickly (within minutes) -- so call and have them activate the phone for you. Just make sure they understand that it is the Walmart plan you are wanting.

If you call them, they don't ask for the IMEI. But I'm sure you could put in the one from the phone, even if it's an ATT phone. T-Mobile is fine with BYOD, that's why they sell SIM card kits.

You can buy the activation kit from Walmart or a T-Mobile store but they are typically a lot more expensive. The cheapest way is to order the kit from the T-Mobile website for $0.99. From what I've seen, they typically take a week, or less, to arrive in the mail.

And I would call the difference between 100 MB and 5000 MB more than just "a little more data".

Yes, the kit is the same. When you get the kit, go online to the prepaid activation page of T-Mobile's website to active your SIM. If you have any issues activating the SIM or it does not activate quickly, there will be an 800 number to call to finish activation -- if you need to call, though, be sure they understand you want the $30 Walmart plan.
