Root Have you donated to a Dev?

I have been running roms since about a month or so after I got my phone. I never donated due to financial constraints. Today, I was reading Pete's thread on V1. I have been mostly using Pete's roms, so I donated $10 today (even with the financial constraints that I have at the moment...ie...My job ends at the end of April.) I'm pretty excited to see what Pete has in store for V1!

So have you guys donated? Just curious...

If you haven't, I would urge you to, even if it's just a few bucks (I know my donation was small). These guys do a hell of a lot of work for us for no charge!

Your donation may seem small in your eyes, but look at the bigger picture.

Pick an app in market. Nearly any app. Let's say, for the sake of this conversation, that one of the apps costs $0.99. If the app is good, that is more than a fair price. Not a lot of people would even notice a pinch from a buck. But then you check the downloads and you notice that app has been downloaded 15,000 times. That probably isn't even close to the number of android users worldwide, so it's not a major portion of the market at that. But none the less... 15,000 people download an app for $0.99. That dev has just received $14,850 for his work on that one single app.

Sure enough, ROM releases don't work the same way. They rely on actual donations instead of charging you and calling it a donation. Regardless, what I am trying to say is this: Your "Small" donation, when grouped with someone elses "small" donation... it adds up. Every little bit counts, and the more people contribute, the more it becomes worthwhile for the devs to continue their work. So in the big picture, your donation was not small at all.

I'm no dev, but none the less... thank you for doing what you can for the community by donating.

@ Fadelight...Thanks for posting that. You put it much better than I did. But I made the post for the same reason. It seems to me after looking around at other Android phone's dev communities, we are pretty damn lucky to have so many quality devs cooking roms for our phone.

I also wanted to clear something up. In my original post, I mentioned Pete, but this is not a "donate to Pete" thread. I am just encouraging people to donate to whomever's roms they enjoy, not just Pete...

I can't quite tell what you mean by this. Just because you can do something doesn't mean you shouldn't appreciate if someone else does it and you use their work.

I always donate to the developer of apps and ROM I use, as I recognize the hard work that has gone into their projects and a touch of my own greed. Developers for the most part are more responsive to my questions and needs when they know I appreciate their work. These are not Bill Gates and Corporate America that are out there spending their time and resources. The least we can do is encourage their grass roots efforts.

I have donated to a few devs. The apps I use the most I toss them a bone cause they deserve it. Still I cant do it for everyone cause the money really starts to add up. Same reason I dont eat out every night or go to the bar.

I don't donate immediately, I first make sure I'm getting something I feel deserves the money. I used quite a few of Pete's ROMs (hell, he's the reason I wanted to root in the first place), so I donated to him. I danced around w/ some diff ROMs and now I'm using quite heavily the Ultimate Droid ROMs. Blackdroid and team have been very busy making live wallpapers and boot animations, and the Customizer, so I donated to them just last night.

The way I see it, these devs, all of them, they're working hard to make our Droids (and all Android phones) live up to their potential and beyond. They not only deserve compensation, but in order for us to keep enjoying the fruits of their labor, we need to keep them in "business". Na' mean?

I donate when I settle on and use a ROM or kernel or app for a while, but not if I have a fleeting fling.

I like what Bekit is doing for his cyanogenmod kernels...he evidently doesn't need/want money himself, but suggests a couple of non-profits to donate to.

His is the first kernel over 1.1 GHz that I can use, have been using it for a few days now, so it looks like I'll be giving the march of dimes some of my dimes in his name.

Good reminder. I just donated too. I love what we are seeing and how even though other phones are coming out that may be "bigger and better" than the droid it is still so relevant and customizable. Props to all the devs out there. Here's one fo' tha' homies!

I just read though these post and I believe everyone of you. Having said that, I think there are a lot of people that blow smoke about how much they donate. I'll keep it real here...I don't donate as much as I should. I buy apps and try to get donate versions of apps when I can. I think ROM devs get screwed...at least from me

I think this post is a good wake up call to support the guys who make our phone experiences so great! I'll donate what I can to a few devs that have long overdue donations tonight!

Really depends on everyone's pocketbook and definition of "fair."

I don't mind sharing my typical donation levels for items where the payment is via donation (e.g., not purchased on the marketplace):

ROMs or Kernels I use: $10

Individual apps: $5 (e.g., Titanium Backup comes to mind.)

Not sure exactly how I came to those numbers...but they seem reasonable to me. I'm assuming, of course, that I'm not the only one donating, so I'm not trying to cover the dev's time all by myself. I typically don't "re-donate" and have been thinking recently about if/when I should do that - more likely for a ROM where something has been added/created that I get significant utility out of.

I have been curious about people's donation levels in general, but people will always puff and fluff data like this when the post on it (and I understand if no one believes what I'm saying about my donations).

I don't donate for ROMs/apps I try out and don't end up using on an ongoing basis. I do believe in a "Try-before-you-buy" ethos, with a strong "must buy" if you keep using it.
