ICS - Real Improvements

I am on a release-day Bionic ruining 6.7.246 and it is not root-ed. I ran for about four days and then did a Factory Data Reset and am glad I did. It is the only thing that makes sense in an environment this complicated.

I am UNFORTUNATELY in a 3G-only area 99% of the time.

There were improvements in ICS over GB that I really appreciate ...

1.2GHz ... thank you.

Dual core operating system ... thank you.

I always thought the slide lock on the Bionic was simply dumb. Using it for over a year there was one period for three hours where I wanted it locked. The fact that I can FINALLY turn it off is great.

There are some absurd pr-installed apps that I just had to have because I wasn't rooted and could not disable them. Now I can.

I had three buttons on the home page to control Airplane. WiFi, and Bluetooth. Now they are so easy to get at under settings I deleted the buttons.

Numerous improvements to the user interface added to the snappier 2 cores and 1.2GHz make it a new experience to use.

What changes GB to ICS really make you happy?

... Thom

The improvements for me is that the Bionic is behaving normally and doing the things its supposed to do efficiently.
I got this phone on launch day and it has never worked so well since then. I have had loads of problems, especially stock and 905. However, I would not be exaggerating to say that I feel like I have a brand new device....
Previously, my phone was not comparable to the S3, and now, it is a lot better than the S3 IMO....yes I have used the S3 extensively over the last 2 months with thoughts of getting rid of my Bionic.
Not anymore.
Hope all issues get resolved and everyone enjoys an efficient Bionic.

Honestly, I love how the phone behaves. It is fast, very easy to use and does what it's suppose to do.

That said, do I trust Verizon not to screw something up in the future? Not at all. With Verizon's track record the past year or so I fully expect them to make changes which will once again bring up data drop issues and other problems, especially since they will be trying to get voice over LTE up and running this next year.

But Punit Soni's apparent dedication to make things right for Bionic owners since he took over at Motorola will likely mean I will try to stay with a Motorola phone regardless of what carrier I go to in the future.

actions speak louder than words. his "dedication" didn't prevent the update from bringing back the infernal headphone whine. he could use a bit more dedication imo

Sorry, but I don't have the headphone whine. If it was the fault of ICS then EVERY Bionic would have the headphone whine. If it was the fault of the phone in general, then EVERY Bionic would have it regardless of the OS.

Likely what it is is one of two things. Either there is some incompatibility with headphones being used that are too sensitive to whatever sound settings are used, or the headphone jacks in some of the Bionics were slightly faulty to begin with and can't handle some of it.

But stop blaming ICS for it, not everyone has it and if ICS was the problem we all would. Just like with every product made, there is going to be some defects with some individual models or even batch runs. Not every Nexus made is perfect, not ever Razr is perfect, not ever Galaxy S3 is perfect. Verizon should very well make it right for you and give you a new phone, but the constant blaming of the wrong thing is getting silly.

... I like being able to set a default number of a favorite contact. Then just click on the picture of the contact and it dials the default.

... Thom
Actually you could do this in GB too, I know, I accidentally set my friends home number as the default on the photo contact widget when I bought my Bionic and she always uses her cell so had to reset it.

ICS brought back the whine. Would you prefer that I blame the postman, or the moon? geez. You dont' need to characterize my opinion as "silly". that's bordering on being rude.

No, I prefer you blame it on something realistic, like possibly a bad batch of headphone jacks that made it into a batch run of Bionic or something much more realistic. Just as you blame the Bionic in the other thread for the data loss we all experienced though you saw the link and all the evidence that EVERY Verizon 4G phone has had data issues and why it seems linked to how Verizon demands that 3G CDMA and 4G LTE be authenticated identically, you still seem bent on blaming just the Bionic, which to me is silly when it clearly isn't the fault of the phone but the fault of Verizon tinkering with the network.

To me it is silly, and just as rude, to constantly blame ICS for what you experience. Are you claiming the ICS on my Bionic, as well as the Bionics of other people who don't have a whine, is somehow different than the ICS on your Bionic? Because using your logic that it is ICS's fault, then our ICS must be different since we don't or else we would ALL have the whine.

I am not disputing you have a problem. Just like you can go out and get a TV set by, let's say Samsung, and you may get one that was manufactured badly, have a some bad parts in it, that doesn't mean every Samsung TV is bad or even most are. It just means you were unlucky enough to get one of the few that had issues. We all get that at times with various products. And yes, Verizon should by all means make it right for you. But to constantly bash a product for something that is clearly not the root cause of the issue is by defintion silly.

Long press one of the photos in the Favorites display. This will show the numbers.

Long press on a number and a menu appears ... select set default.

Now when you are press on one of the pictures it will dial the default.

... Thom
Thank you. BTW, long pressing the picture didn't bring up the numbers for me, short pressing did, but long pressing one of the numbers does give the menu.

Sort of ironic that setting a number as default is actually more difficult under ICS LOL. I don't use the default thing myself, but nice to know how to use it in case I ever do. Thank you.

Now that I have had ICS for a week I can say this phone is rock solid.
1. Speed. Not sure how much the 1.2ghz or dual core is responsible but it is
twice as responsive as before.

2. Stable. I am no longer having to reboot my phone once a day to keep a
connection.

3. Battery. My extended battery now goes 3-4 days before needing a
charge and even then I still have 20%-30% of the battery left.

I am using the stock OTA after coming from 886. I did perform a FDR after
ICS install and can say this phone is better than when I bought it new in Nov.
2011.

I used No Lock sincelaunchday

there's nothing in ICS that makes up for the headphone whine...

the update ruinedmy phone for what I used it for (music)

Having read many of your posts regarding the whine in your headset jack, I would respectfully submit that you have a hardware problem and should work with VZW to get it fixed.

I have a later version of the Bionic (manufactured in early March 2012) and I do not have any audio issues.

I am 100% pleased with the improvement. I've had this device since the day after it was launched, and feel that it is now finally working the way it was intended.
Positives:
-The connection problems I was experiencing appear to be gone.
-Overall, it seems to run not just faster but also smoother.
-I like how multiple app shortcuts can be combined into one spot on the screen. I was using Apps Organizer to do this on GB and always felt that it slightly slowed the overall responsiveness of the device.
-The camera also seems to work better.
-I have a lapdock and like the new desktop interface. It is much improved over the previous version.
-I actually like the new screen lock. For any who aren't aware, it can be unlocked in one motion by sliding to the right.

Minor Downsides:
-I had one App that I really liked called EarthNC lite (nautical charts) that wouldn't reload from TB, and is no longer in the App Store. Can't really blame this on the phone.
-I liked the previous version of the e-mail client better than the one that comes with ICS. I'm now back to using K-9.
-The Weatherbug temperature notification now barely shows up at the top of the screen.
-I liked the look of the old calendar better.
-I liked the look of the phone in the bedside dock under 905 better than on ICS. The new one doesn't get dark enough even once it dims after a few minutes. This negative turned into a positive as I found an app called Clock Dock that provides almost infinite settings, including display brightness and color.

I've seen little to no change in battery life. I am sure that part of this is because I'm "playing" with the phone much more than before. I'm running a motorola extended battery that I've had for about a year, and get about 18 hours worth of moderate daily use and usually have +/- 50% left.

if you have read everything as you mentioned, you would know that I'm just biding my time until the Note 2 comes out. i want a larger phone. I suspect, giving the rave reviews coming from countries all over the globe, that I'll most likely like the N2. If not, I'll get something else pretty soon. I'm not married to this phone.

FYI, I've had several bionics with the whine. a launch day phone. my wife's phone from October last year had the whine. the whine went away with the december update. fast forward to the ICS update--both my 3rd bionic (current) and hers, got the whine back.

read the posts from others with the whine: http://forums.androidcentral.com/droid-bionic/217829-whine-back-headphone-output-246-a.html

note I'm not the only one. also note that a reset doesn't fix it, except for ONE person, so far. ONE person in the universe. amazing, eh?
