Help Does Sprint charge you extra for tethering?

I remember last year when I wanted to tether my blackberry to my laptop I read that i would have to get an addition to my plan that was like $25 to tether or something. What's the deal now with Sprint and tethering phones. I currently have the Unlimited plan with 450 minutes.

Thanks guys.

P.S. I totally realize this might be a noob question.

Actually sprint no longer allows tethering.

(They want to sell data plans)

If sprint catches you, they kill your account.

Just don't tether alot, and you'll be fine.

i use to tether all the time and used well over 200 gb of data and never got a warning and did it for a few months. now with that being said i ave heard of sprint calling and "checking up and giving warnings" but i never got one and like i said i used to dl alot of torrents and other things with no problems at all.

The cracking down has been a semi-recent thing. And they started really enforcing it after the recent 5GB cap has been added.

I used to tether before 'tethering' existed. When I was a rep with AT&T back about 10 years ago, we used the data transfer cables they'd send for transferring numbers out of an old phone to a new one to hook to our laptops - then use the internal WAP connection on the phone as a wonderful 56k modem!

As far as today goes though, there's actually a procedure that most carriers use for tethering prevention...

5GB is the target number they use - unless you crank up over that they won't flag your account. Once you are flagged, you will first be throttled (data speeds will be cut) and they will monitor you for 90 days. If you continue to go over the 5GB mark, they will supposedly begin checking the IP's of the sites you are visiting. If they find things like MegaUpload, LimeWire, RapidShare or other Torrent sites, you will get dropped like a rock...

Other than that, with the streaming apps now, there's not much they will do to you - except for charge you for any overages over the "mythical 5GB cap" that they use on their Mobile Broadband Devices. Unless 4G gets here before then, in which case, they may not even care at all with the cheaper prices that affords them.

As far as the 200GB's? 200 GB's is a gigantic amount of data and will get your booted off Comcast, Xfinity, Fios, DSL or just about any other non-business carrier today. I have no clue how you snuck that much data off on a cell connection, but on Sprint I can't even download fast enough to get to that number. I think if I ran mine 24/7 for 30 days, I'd probably be able to hit about 40GB per month simply due to connection speed limitations - could just be the Moment is that slow on the data transfer though?

been there don't believe for one second that they can tell you how to use your plan if you pay for unlimited data phone and everything else like i do and have for over 6 years, sorry but if sprint was to call me tomorrow and tell me that i needed to quit using my data plan then i would just cancell my entire plan which by the way costs my almost 200 a month its not like they can tellur tethering they just see that ur data has gone up.

Actually, yes they can. Tethering is against the ToS.

Also, the moment speeds are just fine. I get a steady 3meg down and .5 to 1 meg up. Same for my TP and mogul.

Before my moment days I would tether constantly with my sanyo 9000 amd all winmo devices...I always exceded the cap when there was one but was never questioned about it other than a tech rep saying wow you love the web don't you...I replied with yeah sprint tv and radio are my fav apps...he came back with yeah I can see those apps adding up the data...so unless sprint wants to look deep enough...they can't really tell nor do they care if its not abused...if they do ask justify the data usage by saying you use the sprint tv/radio app a lot and they will leave it at that.

Wow I used over 2,687,198 kb this month and haven't herd anything from sprint. I use the same amount of data each month. I'm on a unlimited plan so I doubt there is a 5gig cap, maybe for other plans who knows. Ill be the first to leave sprint if they were to tell me anything about my data usage.

Ummm, 2.6GB isn't enough to trigger anything with Sprint... You need to at least double that for them to start looking at you...

Ha stole the words out of my mouth.

How do they determine it? Packet inspection. They look for ips you've visited etc. Also, they watch the history. If you suddenly spike out of nowhere, that grabs their attention.

zcarman posted that the limit on comcast, verizon, and acouple other was 200 and thats fine but he was wrong.like i said i have tethered with the past 3 devices i have owned "the tp and the pre" and i used the shit out of the data including about 100 wii game downloads and more than enough movie downloads.within about 3 months time i have used more than 100 gb worth of data so how can anyone even say that there is a limit sry i just don't see it!!!!! if they were so worried about there 5 gb cap then what i guess i just flew under their radar right!!!!!i also have the the mifi from sprint and no there is no 5 gb cap on it the deal is that if you go over the 5 gb cap you pay for it but like most people i have the everything plan so i can and i will use as much as i want and if thats a problem with sprint then they need to change their plans to say just that"its the everything plan just don't go over the time limits we set" cause if thats the case then i want a refund plus a lower monthly plan.......

Besides, how, exactly, do you tether to a wii?

If this is true, id expect a phone call soon. Sprint aso reserves the right to charge you par per nyte for an excess of the 5gb softcap, if it is deemed you are abusing the service. 13 times the limit, is clearly abuse. At $.05 per kb, at 94000000 kb, they could legally charge you 4.7 MILLION dollars. 100% legal. However, they realize that would be ludacris, and they cap it at $250.00. Your treading dangerous waters bud. Is it really worth it to tempt them?

Also, you don't know much about technology I assume. Even if your using a wireless router, that doesn't mean you have wireless internet service.

well when u assume you really do make an ASS OUT OF YOU AND ME but anywho i do understand that a wireless router doesn't give you a wireless provider.how am i treading on dangerous waters i pay for my service just like everyone else i should be able to use it any way i want.i don't use that much now because i got into a conversation with one of the devs at pre central and it's like this if i'm using that much and say 10 others are using that same amount its clogging up the towers and its not really fair to everyone on sprint but i did do it as a test just to see if i would get a call or "warning" from sprint i used those same number roughly for 4 months and have never heard a word from sprint!!!! thats my point this question has been brought up on every fourum and there is always the same answers 1 says yes the other says no wether there is or isn't.... well in my own study no they don't charge anything...i can't speak for anyone else...

Mmm no, I just believe your the one who looks like the ass here.

And you pay for your service, and can do whatever you want right? as long as you abide by the terms of service

Perhaps you should read your terms of service. Which is legally binding by the way.

You you lease a car, and they say you can drive it for up to 36000 miles, for x amount per month, and its .10 a mile after that limit, well, if you go over the limit guess what happens?

YOU GET CHARGED FOR OVERAGES

same exact thing bud.

Class Dismissed.
