Monthly internet download limits

Currently on Vodafone in uk and thinking of upgrading to the desire...

However concerned that the Vodafone limit of 500Mb/month may not be enough ?

anyone think this is this a real issue or is 500mb plenty ?

I know the t-mobile tariff is much better at 3Gb but coverage in Belfast is supposedly poor.

The other network with decent coverage (Orange) also has 500Mb limit

It depends entirely on how you use the internet.

If you browse a few pages once in a while, download some apps and send some emails, you will be fine.

However, if you browse the internet on a daily basis on your cell, download music files and watch youtube - particularly when not using a wifi network often - you may want to consider the higher limit!

But it looks a bit expensive.

As mentioned, it depends on how much browsing etc you do whilst not on wifi.

I have got a 3Gb fair use policy on my T-Mobile contract.

If you click the "things you should know." link you get this:

"You can use up to 500MB each month when you go online with your phone. That's a lot of browsing. But don't worry - we'll keep an eye on things and let you know your options before you go over your limit.

If you think you'll regularly use more than 500MB a month, you may find tethering is a better option for you. It's especially useful if you often do things like making calls over the internet."

It seems to me like they are also offering the tethering as a possible way to expand your limit without having to use it for tethering.

Try calling them and hearing your options - getting a carrier that has bad coverage in your region is a bad idea, both for the coverage itself, but it puts an additional drain on the battery.

I'd say 500 is too little, but you can get away with it. As long as you don't stream music and video, 500 should be enough for mail, browsing, maps, etc.

Bingo, 500mb is plenty for browsing, mail, RSS, Twitter, weather, Facebook but steaming music, video and downloading large files is out.

I'm a heavy user and without streaming I rarely top 300mb in a month.

Spotify will wade through about 60-70mb per hour.

For safety, use an app from market called "3g watchdog" which helps you keep tabs on data use, warns when nearing your plan's limit, and disables data when you exceed your limit or are roaming.

Indeed, that sounds like a good tip when in contract and trying to keep within the limits of the contract.

At the moment I'm struggling with the issue of whether 500Mb will be enough for my needs... I'm confident that the 3Gb on t-mobile is more than enough for me however I've not heard any good reports on t-mobile coverage in northern ireland which is the issue for me....

That leaves Voda or Orange which are both "OK" coverage wise but limited to 500Mb....

I think as long as your not using it for tethering then 500 megs should be enough.
