I was kinda hoping around 3-5 before needinh am upgrade.

@rolo I have a Cooler Master Storm Enforcer. It's a 500x300x200 ( I think) mid tower with a 200mm front fan and a 120mm back exhaust fan.

I removed the ssd cage so the psu cables are as low as possible and the hdd cage for better airflow.

I may get a cpu fan and / or a 200mm top fan.

Not sure whether to get the one with fans or not....

60 FPS = 30 FPS w/vsynch, which is annoying to run without) on games that you play.

With nvidia's Adaptive V Sync, if you get below 60fps, it turns it off....

So instead of 60,60,30,30
You'll get 60,60, 58,57...

That is correct and I have tried it but I absolutely loathe tearing; it's more distracting than 30 FPS.

I wouldn't lose any sleep over the GPU fan types. My 580 fans make a noise at high-speed; I'm hoping a good cleaning will fix it; otherwise, they need replacing (if I want to run them that fast, which I doubt I will, even folding 24/7). My 260 blower still works well and those fans do seem more resilient.

I bought our GTX260s Aug 2008 and replaced them with 580s Feb 2011 (2-1/2 yrs) and they were a nice upgrade. I'll be looking at GK114-based cards (Kepler refresh, GTX780) probably 2013Q2-Q3, ~2-1/2 yrs. from getting the 580. The 660Ti performs almost identically to my 580 and the 670/680 aren't worth the cost for such a small upgrade.

So would the fan type on the GPU make any difference worth it?

Also, when I said I want my GPU to last around 3-5 years at the max ... I meant before needing low graphics/ being unable to use it .)

Yes, for me, it isn't worth upgrading at this time--and I even thought of just getting the wife a 660Ti or better and putting her 580 with mine but that just feels like sending good money after bad but I haven't ruled it out (I'll see what's what after Kepler refresh is released if I can't wait until Maxwell).

My point is to plan on buying about every other generation and to buy top-tier (x70 or better) and you should be good until Maxwell refresh.

Just before a upgrade, roughly what would you have to play on, on the older card...?
Not sure if that makes sense...

If you have a 470, playing on high graphics.... You might upgrade to a 680, but by that time, the 470 would only manage low graphics etc...

Guild Wars 2 (high settings sans reflections, which will kill any card)

Skyrim (maxed + AO in control panel)

Diablo III, maxed + AO

Yeah... I think I'll get the 670 signature as 10 quid isn't much for the cooler temps and easier cleaning as you said.
I'll think about upgrading when I have to move to medium graphics... And then make the move when I get to low :-D

I would consider a cheaper/discounted 580 over the 660Ti (same performance). Would you buy a 580 right now? If not, then don't buy the 660Ti.

- in performance and on longevity.

The evga 670 is £290, ftw is £30p, ftw sig 2 is 310.
The 660Ti is £225.
The 580 is around £200-240

I see what you mean. I probably should. But like, I subconsciously just want the best card available, and my brain (damn you brain) is thinking about the best price/performance.

What's the spec of the system it's going into e.g. CPU, memory, mainboard? The best-performing GPU on the market will still perform like a three-legged dog with arthritis if the rest of the rig doesn't allow it the necessary bandwidth.

Better to build a balanced system that satisfies your needs now, than blow money on something that will need more expenditure further down the line to justify itself.

I don't really know what this means Well , I know what it means , but , even with a 580/660Ti, there's not gonna be much of a bottle neck , no?

When you build your PC, I suggest you don't install Windows 8 on it.

I've already built it Just in need of a GPU and maybe an extra case fan.
