i bought a boost galaxy prevail off craigslist. i didnt have much intended for the phone except for using it around the house for internet. i'm not going to activate etc.

i'm having problems playing videos from ice stream and netflix is a joke to say the least with the sync issues. it would be awesome to get that working right. i didnt expect much but i do want to watch movies during travel. youtube is the only access i have to videos which requires wi-fi and i may not always have it.

i currently have mobo player but even it doesnt seem to want to play avi and mp4 files. i have a few other apps like pandora that run smooth. angry birds is choppy from time to time but not much.

how do i get multimedia content working up to par?

i'm not rooted and have a small 2gb microsd

Another great choice of player is : PlayerPro, however, it's a paid app, but well worth the money. This is my daily player for music ( and video ).... I don't think the Prevail is able to play .avi, but I am not too sure !! Never tried.

Another ghood app for streaming around the house is BSPlayer...... they have a free and paid version.

Good luck! :)

MX player works great on the prevail and is capable of playing .avi

Once you DL it, it will also ask you to install its codex... do so and then make sure its set to software decoding by default in the settings.

Edit- why do you assume that YouTube is WiFi only? I stream it from my 3g connection all the time

;) you missed his statement " i'm not going to activate etc.", so if he takes the phone with him and he wants to watch Youtube, he NEEDS WiFi ! ;)

EDIT : Even my old eyes catch sometime something ! Grinzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

i loaded BSplayer and put netflix back on. for a few minutes i had a glimmer of hope that netflix would work but the choppiness and sync issues came back fairly quickly. i even tried older versions of netflix apk's i had found on other forums but i couldnt get past the auto update

Have you considered rooting and roming it?

Cm7 has done wonders to improve the video quality with the updated adreno drivers you can install... might be worth looking into... I know for me stock was a painfull experiance...

BTW, LV, do the Adreno drivers work with CTMod too or are they only for cm7 ???

Tbh.... I'm not sure.... I'll dredge up the thread and see of it has any specifics...

Come to think of it... I DO remember seeing a flash able zip for ctmod...

Edit- Here's the link to the post containing the adreno drivers.... the ctmod version is for 3.3 and contains the updated build.prop from that version...

http://androidforums.com/showthread.php?p=4092614

I'm not sure if blood changed the build.prop in that time... but there is also a link to where Hroark got the original files with instructions on how to manually add the libs and the lines that need to be added to the build.prop

If you need any help, shoot me a pm

This guide is very 'noob friendly' if you follow it through, you will have a rooted prevail and a top of the line custom rom.

http://androidforums.com/showthread.php?t=537889

This should improve the overall performance of your prevail by leaps and bounds and hook you up with near unlimited storage for apps :)

What did you download for a base band ? FE16 or FF19 ?

You need to unzip ( extract ) one of them and there should be the phone and pda file inside !
PS: In Odin you need to navigate to the extracted files !!!!

CTMod3.68.zip ( your ROM ) you DON'T extract, just copy to the sd-card and follow the guide !

EDIT : LV........ maybe your eyes are tired, but you're still speedy !!! Grinnzzzzz So it's o.k. !!! hahaha

Hi,

first of all, this is a thread about : Support suggested players/codecs to play videos?

So maybe asking in the "All things root" section would been better ;)

But anyway, here you can find everything : http://androidforums.com/3528753-post1.html

Well, it's a matter of taste, some like cm7 with kato kernel better, other ones use CTMod3.68 with kouma kernel ( CAN'T mix kernels and ROMS if they are not made for each other ! )

PS : FF19 Stock is NOT recommended. If you really want to use FF19, you need a custom ROM and kernel !! With FE16, you can use stock or custom ROM/Kernel !!! ( Samsung put some goofy crap into FF19, so I would not use it ! Except for maybe the phone/radio part of it, but it doesn't give me any advantage ! )

here's something i meant to ask.....

i have a 4.3 inch tablet from big lots that runs 4.0.4 ics. it will run netflix quite well. not perfect but certainly watchable. neither of these devices have flash support. so what does it take for netflix to run? i will have to run down the specs for a comparison but is it internal memory? i have moved every app possible to the sd card.

second, still cant get any players to run avi or mp4. i may try to side load one just to test.

i abandoned the root process because of it getting late but i still have odin. i just dont have the other files for the phone and pda fields yet

O.K., download this : http://db.tt/ORBp3o3J

Extract the .zip to a folder. It's the FE15 rooted base band with CWM. All files you need are in there. Start the Odin what came with this .zip and navigate to the other files to put them in ( ops, phone, pda, etc.) !!

+Then download CTMod3.68.... DON'T UNZIP IT !!!!! Just copy the .zip file to your sd-card.....and follow the guide !!!

For the MP4 problem : Are you trying to use a full blown HD video ? Won't work, you may need to convert your MP4 video down.... I always convert to 480x320 and they all run perfect ! I use "MediaProSoft Free HD Video Converter" : Video to HD | HD Video Converter | Convert HD Video

Hope this helps !

i will give that a shot. i tried the other way mentioned earlier and didnt get super user so i have to assume the root didnt take. i used the FE16 files but my fone says it is using FF19. now it gives me a weird beeping tone every 20 seconds or so. no clue what that means. it seems to be running a bit slower too.

as far as the videos go they come from ice stream and are labeled dvd rip so i will have to investigate the quality. and of course netflix streams like at whatever quality it is and i'm not sure if i can adjust it.

Ummmm one question : Your phone is a Samsung Galaxy Prevail, right ?????

And if you use Odin and use the FE16_Rooted_CWM5 image files, there will be no FF19 on your phone and then, after installing CTMod, you won't get update notifications to FF19 !

( sometimes users get update notifications. But generally : NEVER EXEPT A UPDATE ON A ROOTED PHONE !!!!! )

EDIT : For the Video problem, just try the converter I mentioned above, start it, select the video file to convert and on the next screen, click on "Device" and select the "To iPhone" option, which gives you 480x320...... this works very well for the Prevail !

I dont know if this will help you but I have the comcast app to run tv shows and movies. I noticed that the video was lagging and I too do the same thing as you. I just use wifi and dont use the boost service. What I did was overclock my processor to 946mhz with voltage control and killed any apps running I didnt need to use with advanced task killer. Once I did this the video would lag in the beginning like it was trying to sync the video and audio then played smooth after the initial sync.

Before you continue with CTMod, you should address the "Beep Problem" first.

What exactly did you do when you odined the FF16 ???? I mean, after using Odin fo flash the FF16 base band, you should have a clean, working phone.... if there are any "beeps", you might have a hardware issue !!!! And installing CTMod and other things might only cause more trouble. You gotta fix the problem first !

EDIT : Might want to go back into CWM Recovery ( Vol + and Power ) and do a factory reset or wipe, also, wipe dalvik, then reboot system and see if you still get the beep !
