Is it possible to sync directly between Mac iCal and Address Book to Android (Motorola Droid) without using intervention from Google sync? (and keeping the information from syncing to Google)

I don't want my contacts and calender lying around in Googles cloud.

Thanks
Ken

I don't think so.

*that's why you don't use macs*

wow windows fanboy. did you read his question?

your phone is google based. in order to activate it, you have to have a google account. how does this become an issue with mac? everything on the phone side is based on google so how would you be able to sync without using google?

to CA-Ken, sorry to say it, but the moment you activated your phone, you immediately placed your contacts and calender on a google cloud.

Completely incorrect. you can bypass the google sign in.

then obviously we didnt know that, so why didnt you just say that the first time?

if thats true, then bypassing the google login, he could then use a mobile me account and keep everything synced over the air, or i am sure there are other ways that things can be synced, even down to plugging in the phone on a regular basis.

maybe sometime within the next week or so we can actually help this person with their question.

I thought that was common knowledge o.o

Now there *are* ways to sync locally on windows, although I think the only one that works well is htc sync.

Could we re-wind just a bit? I am a Mac user and have considered an Android phone, but my understanding is that there is no fool-proof way to sync (TWO WAY sync, please) the Mac's iCal and Address Book with the corresponding Google applications (contacts & calendars), and that third-party software like Missing Sync that claim to do so is both buggy and pricey. *Is* there any way for long-time Mac users like me, with tons of info on iCal and Address Book, to use an Android phone without constant fiddling and frustration? Anyone? (And yes, I know, I *could* just get an iPhone -- but I like having a phone that works, so my mobile service provider is Verizon)

it depends.....the OP wants to do this without using google's services. however, if you dont mind using google's services, you can easily sync your macbook/imac to do this:

address book is as simple as going to preferences in address book, choosing the accounts tab and then choosing "synchronize with google"

ical, you have two different options: you can subscribe to your google calender. very easy to set up, however you have to make your google calender public in order for this to work. some people arent down with. the second option is using CalDAV to setup your google calender with ical. click on the link and it will walk you through.

Vandyblackandgold: Thanks for trying, I appreciate it.

However, making my iCal calendar public is out of the question, and CalDAV (a) doesn't work as indicated (it just hangs and hangs) and (b) only allows an existing Google calendar to be imported into iCal, not the other way around ... so, unless I'm totally off-base here, syncing iCal and Google Calendars just can't be done.

i am a little confused. i just added an event in iCal and it immediately showed up on my droid, in my google calender. i guess i dont understand what you mean? did you try using CalDAV? are you saying when you tried, nothing that was already in iCal showed up?

I'm a little confused, what exactly is the problem with storing your contacts and calender in G-mail? I mean, unless you are publicly criticizing a major communist regime (;)), What exactly do you think google is going to do with your info, start cold calling your friends?

I use both the contacts and calendar features and overlay my calendar with my wife and daughter's, and for me it is one of the selling points of the service. If I wanted it to be locked on my desktop, I would have gotten a blackberry, not an android device.

Last I checked Address Book only displays the 'sync with Google' option if you've connected an iPhone to your Mac (as have done so at least once at some point in the past, rather than having to connect an iPhone every time you want to sync local/cloud). There is a plist file hack to set the flag manually so that it shows up.

I am running Leopard though, so it's entirely possible that in Snow LEopard the feature is universally available without the hack or an iphone.

i believe snow leopard has the sync option. im running snow leopard and i dont have an ipod touch or iphone and i have the sync to google option.

i apologize for my previous post... i thought what was asked was a calendar sync with ical.

but not syncing to google? a manual sync may be possible... but why not just go through google when you have a google phone?

Is it possible to sync directly between Mac iCal and Address Book to [any] Android (T-Mobile 3Geee) without using intervention from Google sync? ...

I don't think so. ...

Situation: Two brand new T-Mobile myTouch 3Gee 'Droids and several iMacs and Mac Minis plus a MacBook. ...

Anyone? ... anyone?

With or without Google in the loop?

(I suppose I could "export" to ThunderBird format, email that to my PC and sync there. :( )

And as everyone knows, AT&T sucks a big one. I have and want to keep my T-Mobile and my Macs.

I don't have Snow Leopard (but I think I'm going to upgrade. $30 is too cheap to pass up for an easy sync option and getting back 6GB of space on my HD) but I know that it DOES have a built in sync option with Google Contacts and Google Calendar.

How does the sync work for you? Is it worth it?
