I cannot fix this. Nor can I figure out any way to work around this. It is extremely annoying. For some reason the ringer on my phone will randomly turn on. I have no clue why. I keep the phone on vibrate at all times because it annoys me to no end to hear phones ringing in public. I had no problem with this on the DInc2. I set it to vibrate one time and never had to mess with it again.

On this phone at least twice a day, it'll flip back to full sound. Usually it's in the morning, but yesterday evening it rang unexpectedly as well. I have no clue why and can't recreate it. It's annoying enough that I'm tempted to chunk the phone because I can't stand it randomly changing settings with no input from me. Any ideas why it is doing this?

If you haven't already tried a factory reset, FWIW, on my OG Incredible, when it was still running stock, it constantly reset the screen-on time to 10 seconds (or 30 seconds, I can't remember), which I couldn't deal with. It didn't matter how many times I reset it, or how many factory resets I did. After I rooted the phone, however, lo and behold the problem went away, never to return. Unfortunately, your problem might be similar, a bug that's unique to your device. I've noticed on my Incredible 4G, that sometimes the notification sound rings several times for no apparent reason, when it should be just once. It's a little embarrassing in meetings.

I don't see what a factory reset will do and at this early stage shouldn't be necessary. It seems tho that that is what they always suggest at verizon. That or blaming an app. Take the phone back to verizon tell them it's defective and that you want a replacement. It's not our job to fix a defective phone.

I had issues with my first inc4g. It would randomly shut off through out the day. i could not find out what it was or how to re-create it. I was a little worried cause in my line of work, When sh** hits the fan, some people might need to get a hold of me. I did a couple factory resets and it did not help. I called up verizon and told them the phone randomly shuts off. They sent me a new phone, i sent them my old phone. It has not happened again. i have no problems with the one I have now. Just for what it is worth.

I totally agree with your method. :stickyman:

I don't know about anyone else but I didn't buy a smartphone so i can occassionally do a factory reset and wipe out everything that I installed on my phone. It defeats the whole purpose of the phone and i get very indignant when a verizon rep suggests it. My experience with verizon reps, at least when it comes to the sales people in the store, is that they are not very knowledgeable when it comes to the technical parts of a smartphone so to me a factory reset is just a cop out answer. God forbid they just say they don't know. So if your phone isn't working right let the rep know that you want verizon to do the right thing and replace it. Of course when they replace it you will get a used phone but that's a whole other complaint. But a factory reset is nothing more then a guess. In other words let see how your phone works when there is absolutely nothing on it. What does that prove. You're certainly no closer to knowing why it wasn't working right to start off with.

Bugs like this? It doesn't happen often and went away as soon as I went to a different screen.

I've determined that the ringer turns on overnight. Again, no idea why it does though.

I've also discovered that I have to unlock my phone in order to take a call which is the stupidest thing I've ever heard of and annoys me even more. If someone calls me and my screen is locked, I have to enter my unlock code just to get to the screen that asks if I want to accept or reject the call. What is up with that?

You have obviously never owned a computer... I work on PCs and do software development for a living, and I can't tell you how many times I have had to reimage a machine or reset IE back to factory defaults, or wipe and recreate a profile on a machine. Sometime it doesn't pay to spend hours and hours trying to figure out what setting got tweeked or what program has caused your computer to act up... Factory Reset should be a last resort, not the first option, but I dissagree with you, it is a valid option if nothing else seems to work. You don't own a "smart" phone, you own a mini-computer that happens to make a call.

I don't consider wiping out all of my settings and spending hours setting it back up again as "maintenance".......

I don't have a passion for Verizon reps either. They are not knowledgable most of the time and they simply follow the "troubleshooting script" they were taught to do. (But once I actually met a rep when I bought my latest Dinc4g and this guy was definately a rare find! Wish there were more like him!)

Anyway, weather you like it of not, a factory reset is the only final and valid way to really test a phone. You can only compare apples to apples! The minute a consumer walks away with it, it becomes an orange! Verizon is not responsible for bad or ill-written apps that don't work, and apps don't always uninstall completely either!

BUT.... you should only have to do it ONCE. A factory reset IS A VERIFICATION PROCESS. If the phone doesn't work after a reset, you've proved your point and Verizon should take it back. If it works after a reset, then you need to watch what you load on it, or know what every app is suppose to do when you load it.

Like it or not, that's the way the process works. If you get a rep that replaces your phone without a reset, that means he's a nice guy or he already knows about the problem and hopes the replacement phone works better.

Again... I dislike the reps as much as everyone else, but a reset IS part of the process!

Please let's not used computers as an example, instead let's use almost any other product you buy out there. You buy something and it's not working properly. It's still under the warranty so you return it. Does the store usually say here we have a nice used one for you that was returned not too long ago. We checked it out and it's okay. Or you return it and the store says we'll tell YOU how you can fix it. Factory reset is a cop out, saying we don't know what's wrong.
And I agree there are some Verizon reps who actually do seem to be knowledgeable and do try to help. But they are far and few between and I can't stand it when a rep doesn't know the answer, which I can accept, but instead gives me some idiotic answer that is nothing short of insulting. Too much money has been spent on the phone and on the contract to just blow off a customer with some irrelevant textbook answer who's only purpose is to get the customer out of the store.

But... It is a computer. Which is also a phone. Not a toaster or even one of those old landline thingys.

There are apps that let you backup all of your other apps to SD, so at least some of it can be automated. Other than that, its all app settings and home screens.

Computers have software issues, its a fact of life nowadays. Hardware issues are unacceptable but Verizon doesn't want to ship replacements for fixable software issues.

Thumbs up! They are user-programable devices. You may not particularly like it, but you have to compare apples to apples (or computers to computers!) Face it.... I have a TV that has the option to RESET all settings to default! So what do you think the first thing support will tell me when I have a problem and want to return it? And what about my Canon printer that had a wireless problem and support told me about a key combination so I can reset it all back to "like new" from day one! (before I set up the wireless network)?

.... it is what it is!

I understand the necessity at times for a factory reset.as a last resort option. Unfortunately verizon reps seem to use that as a resolution more time then not. I get tired of going into a verizon store with a problem and receiving a totally ridiculous answer. So they throw factory reset around as a resolution because they dont know what they're doing. If you dont know the answer than just say so. Dont tell me to do a factory reset because yiu dont know what the problem is. Or dont tell me its a problem with an app when its not. Like I said factory reset may be a legitimate resolution but verizon reps throw it around as a resolution because they don't know what they're doing

I hear ya! But seriously, don't just pick on the Verizon reps (or other phone providers). Just about every "so-called" PC repair service at those Office Depot, Best Buy, etc. do the same thing with your computers. ...and why? Quick & dirty fix.

I do computer repair for a living and the only reason I support a reset of any kind is that in most cases, no matter what my clients tell me, they always hold back info on what they've done proir to calling me.... usually because they don't understand what they did and they think that if they admit to doing something, I'll void their warranty (usually those freebee fix-it-yourself programs they tried before they called me!). Reality is, with the millions of code conflicts that can occur with programs and apps, sometimes the only way to prove it's not the device is to start from scratch.
You have to start from a known reference point. I can't fix it properly unless they are up front with me.
So I'm not defending those guys, but I see why they find it easier to go that route.

On a similiar note, I had a client that just happened to also have a problem with his phone and asked me for help. Complaint was that it froze up, or ran so slow he couldn't even make a basic phone call with it.
One look and the guy had every game he could load on it, plus notifications and alerts all on for almost every app loaded on the dang thing.... for email, twitter, facebook, calendar, TV guide, skype, and who knows what else...... seriously???? ....and you wonder why it chokes? (I see PCs with the same issues, too!)

Point being, there are some "not-so-smart people" who are writing some of these apps, and there are some not so smart users that just download anything that sounds cool. Put 'em together and you have the makings of a disaster. But they are usually the ones that scream the loudest because that's what you get with High tech devices in low tech hands.

Well put. Kinda like putting 20 passengers in a rowboat.
