Help 2 different behaviours in android 4.2 compared to 4.1.2

Hi. After upgrading to 4.2 on my Galaxy Nexus, I've discovered 2 things that bother me:
1. In 4.1.2 (google factory image) I used to use the volume buttons to wake up the phone. Now in 4.2 (again google factory image) it doesn't work anymore - only the power buttons wakes up the device. Is there a way to wake the device up using the volume buttons?
2. I set the screen to turn off after 30 seconds. Before the screen turns off completely it dims a little. In 4.1.2 it was dimming slowly and consecutively, but in 4.2 there is a bug and ugly "jump" in the screen brightness. Is there a way to go back to the old, nices, less "brutal" behaviour?

I personally prefer a device not wake with volume buttons, and I dont think I ever even noticed that, but I can understand if you did appreciate it.

I would think with root it's possible but I dont know any apps that do this.

As for #2:

I think they did this to save battery. The dimming was a bit of a drain. It may not sound like much but every little milliamp helps :)

1. If true, that's awesome. I only want the power button to toggle the screen. You may have to look into custom ROMs to do what you want.

2. The word you're looking for is 'progressively', not 'consecutively'.

progressively, gradually, yes I know......... (bad english, I'm sorry, thanks for correcting me)
However for left handed its convenient to be able to use buttons of the left side of the device (since there is no button on the screen itself)

Index finger presses the power button for this leftie. ;)

I guess I'm old fashioned. I want power to be power and volume to be volume. None of this fancy multifunction stuff.

I didn't even know stock Google ROMs allowed that. My 4.1.2 ROM doesn't have that (Bugless Beast v. icantrememberanymore).

yeah, i also didn;t think this was possible without Root and a custom ROM. you sure you weren't on a custom ROM? are you rooted?

either way, i am sure it is possible to do with a modified build.prop file. I just never really looked into it since the power button is fine for me. but i am sure it is just a line of "code" in the build.prop file and it will enable volume wake.

I'm 100% sure I installed a google factory image which I downloaded from google developers site
I am rooted but never installed anything that has something to do with volume wakeup.
Maybe it was just something they had in 4.1.2 and was removed in 4.2........
What is a build.prof file? How can I edit this file? What do I need to change there?
