high quality turn based rpgs?

are there any other professional level quality turn based rpgs currently out for android? all the other games seem to be using rpg maker sprites or have horrible translations. i could so go for a dragon quest 7 from ps2 for android.

Well there is always final fantasy 3 which is the ds remake. Its pretty lenghty and quality rich if you ask me.

There's also some great tactics based rpg's in the form of "spectral souls" and "blazing souls" which were both PSP ports.

If you respect the genre I do not recommend these games. Ff3 is good, try battle loot adventure and traquehack

SS and BS are both good. Not sure why you wouldn't recommend them. If your referencing your experience based on the PSP versions I would argue the experience is far greater on android. Touch controls are both intuitive and responsive IMHO. Though these games of course aren't your traditional turn-based rpgs, so-to-speak.

No. The reasons for the games hate stays true to the android version. Its flawed, incomplete and unpolished. The game has an interesting battle system but if you don't abuse it you wont be winning any battles at a decent pace.

Why do these RPGs have to be so expensive? Oh well, at least I will have something to spend my $25 credit on when I finally get a Nexus 7.

My favorite turn based RPGs on Android so far:

Cthulhu Saves the World
Penny Arcade's Rain Slick 3
Avadon: The Black Fortress (tablet only)

They all have good storylines with solid writing (not cheesy poor translations), are Android ports of PC games from indie developers, and are completely free of IAP.

Edit: I forgot to mention that Avadon was just added into the current Humble Bundle for Android for those who pay higher than current average. Check out humblebundle.com.

I'm playing Eternal Legacy now and I like it. It's very Final Fantasy, right down to some of the characters who seem to have been copied from FFX.

FPSE and ePSXe are cheap and work very well. You can usually get the games on Ebay for a $10 - $15 bid for disks in "good" condition, and they're really easy to rip and copy to your device. Save states are a huge bonus, and while you won't have touch controls, the onscreen controls are fine and both emulators have gamepad support. Just a suggestion.

If you like turn based RPG play you could try Vampires Fall. Its a free game with some nice features: single player/multiplayer/chat/etc.. I've gotten tons of hours out of it and still play. Plus an expansion is coming soon.

also you should try symphony of eternity, end of aspiration, eve of genesis etc. all pretty good old school 16 bit turn based rpg's

What you are asking for is very hard to find and that it has great graphics. Try Symphony of The Origin, Eternal Legacy, Final Fantasy Dimensions, Final Fantasy III...

Playstation 1 emulators are always a good choice.

it convinced me to finally put the credit card details in to make a purchase $3, and it is bloody brilliant

(it may not quite fit the thread, but i am pretty sure anyone posting/reading in here will love it still!)

it's a turn based / real time game. basically if you aren't taking any actions everything is frozen, but while you are doing stuff the monsters will be creeping up on you. This means you have time to conisder your actions (sometimes that may help! ie you're down to one scroll, and about to be slaughtered, will it be a teleport, armor enhancment, or something REALLY bizarre



it's a nethack inspired game, uses unity engine (thats the biggest negative i'd say, had stability issues in the past, but is better at the minute, but often lose the game from phone calls etc). Its a 2d platform dungeon crawler. It's not totally about hack-n-slash (definitely not saying it's deficient in that area), but to me the variety of items and situations you find yourself in is the big draw to me. Seriously try to avoid any guides of objects etc, dont spoil the fun - find out about them in the game (you might need to check general help to ensure you dont miss anything, ie (dont know if it IS in the help) it was a long time before i realised you could tweak the stats rolled for your character at the start)). The most powerful spell of all? Identification (finally got a spellbook for it and then promptly died ). Sometimes you might just chuck some equipment on, and then a few minutes later you're wondering how the heck has this happened? Sometimes you may not even really notice the effects, untill it's id'd later and then you think "OHHHH!!!!! THATS what happened!!"

the benefit to the unity engine is you can get the game on (think this is the full list for now) - Windows, Mac, browser based, and android (and i think there is a push to get it on steam). It has multiplayer (but not true multiplayer, i think you and the other person will each seperately spawn into identical dungeons? not really sure havent tried that yet)

if waz continues to put new features in (and more weird mystery items ) the game could have some serious staying power. I did see a comment about alignements coming into play more.

Before paying you can go down 300 meters in the dungeon, definitely enough to get you hooked!!

Don't let the 2D sprites fool you, Symphony of Eternity is a very good game. It reminds me of Lunar remake for PSX (originally on Sega CD).

I spent 20 hours on the main game & I think it has 7 post game dungeons. I'll be checking out Kemco's other RPGs, prob Eve of Genesis next.

As I said in another thread, hope they make it to the Ouya.

I've been playing a lot of Puzzle Quest 2 on my Nexus 7 lately. Its an RPG with the turn based battles involving a match-3 (or more) puzzle game. You can try out a few small quests in the first town for free, but after that you have to pay to unlock the rest. I think it was $2 for each character or $4 for a full unlock (worth it, imo).

At least you don't have to pay at first, which is good because the initial download when you first start the game could go past the 15 minute refund window, so at least they're not gaming the system to get your money.

Just wanted to say, thanks for the suggestions. I bought Cthulhu Saves the World last week and I am hooked. Not all good either - I've been staying up too late and leaving for work a little late because I can't stop playing. Its really fun, and has a good amount of humor in the dialogue and if you check the drawers and bookshelves in the towns.

Based on that, I'll have to try your other recommendations later on.
Update: Rain Slick 3 seems like a precursor to Cthulhu Save The World, that A button in Cthulhu was really convenient by comparison to none at all. I should have played Rain Slick 3 first, but now it just doesn't seem as good.
