I have had quite a few photos emailed or sent through bluetooth to me.
Also other stuff I have downloaded off the web.
I usually find them and move and rename them.

My question is, can I delete them them from the pull down download list? Or does that delete them all from my nexus 7?
I seem to have a long list there now.

It's fine to delete them from the pull down download list. If I want to remember a photo or app I've downloaded, I tend to swipe the other notifications away, otherwise I just clear it. It's just a notification that you've downloaded it, so yeah, it's fine to remove it from the pull down list :).

Thanks. Have just had a look in my download folder and there's lots of stuff there. Can it all go also?
Most of it is ebooks I have downloaded. But they have also gone to the ebooks folder. Is that because I added them to Aldiko?
Just trying to be tidy lol

Yes, when you import a book into Aldiko it copies the file into the eBooks folder and leaves the original file where it is. Once the book is in Aldiko you can delete the original from the Downloads folder.

Having said this, I always copy downloaded books onto my PC so a have an archive of them. You can get the epubs back out of Aldiko just by copying them back out of the eBooks folder, but this is a pain when you have lots of books. After I reset my N7, prior to the 4.2 upgrade, I simply copied the books back from my PC and imported them all again.

You said you copy downloaded books to your computer. Which ones then... From download folder or from Aldiko folder in folders?

Also I use Calibre on my computer, can I add them into there when I copy them onto my computer?
If so do I just put them into the calibre folder or somewhere else and click Epub to import?

I get epubs from lots of places. Some I download on the N7, some I download on my PC, some I convert from other formats using Calibre and so on. I maintain a single master collection on my PC in a folder called Books, and wherever I get the epubs I copy them into this master collection. I have a second folder on the PC called CurrentBooks where I keep the books I have queued up to read. So after resetting my N7 I just copied back the epubs in the CurrentBooks folder.

So when I download a book on the N7 I copy it from the N7 Downloads to the Books folder on my PC. If I'm going to read it soon I'll then copy it to CurrentBooks on the PC so I have it ready to hand.

The advantage of keeping a single master Books folder on the PC is that I can back it up to my Google storage in case the PC dies.

Thank you for such a detailed answer. Its a great help. Will do that.
Regarding books are you talking about the whole book folder ( for each book) or just the Epub file?

Also with calibre if I copy all my 500 books in calibre to a master Books folder are they recognised if I add them elsewhere? Or are they calibre files?
Do like calibre for organising but don't understand how it works lol

Look forward to the answer

Think I need to ask you about Google storage also lol

You just need to backup the epub file.

I really only use Calibre for converting books, but as I recall Calibre works a bit like Aldiko. When you add a book into Calibre it copies the epub file into it's own folder, but it leaves the original epub in place. The copy Calibre makes is just a copy of the epub. Calibre doesn't do anything weird with the file, it just creates two extra files for each book (cover.jpg and metadata.opf) that contain info about the book. You don't need to back these up as Calibre will just recreate them the next time you add the book. Actually Aldiko also creates these two files when you add a book. have a look in the eBooks folder on your N7 and you'll see those files.

When you read my comments about storing books you need to bear in mind that I'm an old time computer nerd and for me a book is an epub file that I can save into some directory using Explorer. This the complete opposite to the approach taken by e.g. iTunes because iTunes hides the file details from you and you're not supposed to worry about where iTunes has stashed the file. Calibre and Aldiko work a bit like iTunes, and if you're happy for them to work this way that's just fine. use calibre to manage all the books, and use Calibre to copy them to your N7 as required (I'm pretty certain Calibre supports Aldiko on Android). My own preference is to manage the books myself using Explorer and independantly of any software. But this is more work and you do need to be more of a geek.

Well thanks for lots of info yet again
I am collecting lots of EBooks now so it makes sense for me to back them up
As will take me years to read them all (i may not still be here lol even though I am a fast reader lol)

So basically i have the choice, save just the epubs or save calibre folder and epubs I have besides
Can I save Kobo, Kindle and Smashwords books too?

Kindle books are just .mobi files in the same way that Aldiko books are (usually) just .epub files. If you use the PC Kindle reader it will keep the .mobi files in your Documents folder in a folder called "My Kindle Content". Smashwords allows you to download books in lots of formats. I tend to download them in epub format so I can them with Aldiko. I don't know about Kobo I'm afraid.

Like you I now have loads of ebooks, and there are too many to keep them all on the N7, and even in Calibre managing that many books gets to be a pain. That's why I store them separately.

There's a video about Google's file storage here, but lots of companies do online storage e.g. Amazon and DropBox.

Well thanks again Learnt a lot here from you :)

Didnt know I could save Kindle books also.
Kobo books go into My Digital Editions folder. Do you know if I need to copy the whole folder to save them? Or just the epubs?
I know I read somewhere regarding Calibre don't add to folder unless through Calibre itself

So regarding my Nexus 7 download folder ........ I can delete everything in it?
Amazon and Adobe Reader files?

For the Kobo books I'd guess you just have to copy the epubs, but I've never used Kobo so i don't know for sure

Re the download folder, PDF files won't be copied when you read them with Acrobat Reader, so if you want to keep the PDFs you need to manually copy them somewhere safe. Everything else should be safe to delete.

I am not using a kindle reader
Using my Nexus 7 (also Kobo touch) for ebook reading
So is there a way to back kindle files up?
Or do I back the whole folder up? Or don't I need to lol
Don't know a thing about Kindle files.
Also didn't know if to import them into Calibre as I may get different formats mixed up:thinking:

You have helped me a lot Thanks :)

I found that but half the files aren't labelled so how do I know what I am backing up? lol
The mobi files I have been given on a disc Lots it seems ,Don't know what they are either as not labelled
1.Can try and put them onto the N7 (but where do I put them and where do they go?
2. Should they play through the Kindle App?

Think your idea of saving ebooks to a main folder is brilliant and want to do it. As now have 2 or 3 folders.
But if half of the books have no names how do I just save the epubs?
even sending through Calibre doesn't always change the name.

Really grateful for all the advice U r a star

I don't know what created the "Books" folder on the N7. On my N7 I manually created a Books folder because that's where I put books copied from my PC, but I've never seen any software create the folder automatically.

The only way to deal with dodgy epub or mobi files is to open them to see what the book is, then manually rename the file. On your PC I recommend Adobe Digital Editions for reading epubs. You can just double click the file and it will open, so its a lot easier for working through a disk full of epubs. There's no need to import it as you have to with Calibre. If you have the Kindle Reader installed it works the same way with obis: just double click the .mobi file and it will open.

I fired up my copy of Calibre to have a look, and I couldn't see an option to rename a book. There is an "edit metadata" option, but that that just changes the details stored inside the .epub file. It doesn't change the file name. If I've missed something talk me through how you're renaming the book in Calibre and I'll have a play.

Re the Adobe Digital editions, I note the current version is 2.something while mine is 1.7.2. I wonder if Adobe have managed to break something in the curent version. Unfortunately I don't have the installer for the earlier version lying around anywhere otherwise I'd mail it to you.
