Root Is anyone working on rooting the 2.1 update?

I was one of those people who unrooted back to stock for the 2.1 update and I now realize that I shouldn't have done this becasue the roms were so much better.

So my question is.... Is anyone working on rooting the 2.1 OTA update or are they just working on new roms, etc.

I just have to decide if I should wait or if I should just flash back to 2.0.1 and go from there all over again.

Any thoughts or suggestions?

I feel that there is a need to root 2.1. Its so people dont have to flash back to 2.0.1.

YOU feel there is a need but the people working on it probably don't see it as a priority.

When root is not an option, people will spend hours and hours looking for an exploit. Since there is a way (granted a little more cumbersome now that people will have to flash back to 2.0.1), it is not as big of concern.

You are talking efficiency and most people don't care. I've rooted once...whether that takes 30 minutes or 1 hour, it's of little significance in the big picture. I don't think the people working on this are going to invest all of their time towards something that will only save you a little time. I'm sure someone will get it done...just don't expect it to be done right away.

I feel a need for a 2.1 root exploit too. I realize that may not be the root-hacker's priority right now, but they're short-sighted in not offering it. Pretty soon all non-rooted droids will have 2.1 on them. People are going to want to root and not have to flash back to an older version first. If the root community wants to grow they're going to have to accomodate a 2.1 root, otherwise the userbase will stagnate at what it is now.

I'm included in that group. I considered rooting a while ago, but 2.1 was always "coming very soon now" so I held out for 2.1 to see what it offered. Now I'd like to do some customization on 2.1 that requires root. I'm not willing to reformat my droid since I have a lot of application data, which I ironically can't back up unless I'm rooted first. Go figure.

I don't know too much about rooting but what I do know is that I want to root my 2.1 OTA updated Droid!!!!
I mean I would do the root the complicated way via SBC or whatever but I much rather go straight to rooting my Droid directly from 2.1
I mean I might lose some benefits from the 2.1 update that cannot be attainable by the root that goes from 2.0.1 to 2.1 like the awesome Droid cybernetic brain live paper or the general speed of the 2.1
I heard rumors that the root from 2.0.1 to 2.1 is slower than the actual 2.1 so....kinda scared....
I mean the only thing I'm probably going to do my rooted Droid is allocating SD card space for applications so the internal phone ram does not have to be weighed down thus the phone gets super speedy!!!!
Please someone root the ota 2.1 droid update Please!!!!!

The biggest reason any rooted users would want the "root community" to grow is so we will have more people in a position to help us discover new things.

That said... how much work do you think people are going to do just to give you a hand-me-out knowing that you wouldn't even be willing to flash back to 2.0.1 in order to get root? That shows a total lack of willingness to add to the knowledge pool. It says "I want everything, but I won't give anything back."

Once every single phone has 2.1, as you have stated it will, one of three things will happen. (in no particular order.)

1) people willing to do work to add to the knowledge pool will still be willing to flash back to attain root.

2) Everyone who wants rooted 2.1 will already have it either by flashing back or by having root right from the start.

3) The devs will be MUCH more interested in figuring out how to port 2.2/2.3 over for the 2.1 rooted users so we can enjoy the latest and greatest.

This isn't meant as a slam to anyone around here, but let's face it... the whole point for devs in rooting is to have the latest and greatest. They will keep moving forward. It isn't up to them to give you a leg up so you don't have to flash back in order to get root. Their main focus will always be the latest and greatest things. It's up to YOU to catch up.

I was in the same boat, went back to stock just for the update. Its not the custom roms I missed as much as other things like the leds hack and full access to system files. I knew that I was going to lose a little bit of stuff flashing back to 2.0.1, but I also knew the longer I waited the more I would lose.

So I bit the bullet, backed up what I could and flashed the sbf. What was cool was doing it 5 minutes before I left for work. On my lunch break I rooted with Droidmod and downloaded titanium backup which quickly gave me busybox. Then I got Rom manager and flashed the 2.1 rooted update. Nice and easy.

I would recommend doing all this the hard way the first time so that you learn, and know what is actually going on. But it really nice that the tools are there to make it easy.

And I can't tell the difference between rooted and not rooted 2.1, not sure why anyone would because its the exact same OS just rooted. I'm very happy with it as-is.

I suggest that if you want root and know how to get it, just do it already. So far I haven't heard of anyone working on rooting it, and it may be a very long time, if it ever even comes.

I can pretty much guarantee it will take quite some time if it ever happens at all. When we rooted the G1 we did it on Android 1.5, and when 1.6 came out guess what? No one bothered to look for a root exploit. All we did was use a .NBH file (similiar to .SBF but for HTC's) to flash back to 1.5 and root from there, then upgrade to a rooted 1.6 ROM.

And if any of you think rooting the Droid is "hard" then you should have seen the root process for the G1. It makes the Droid look like a walk in the park.

Not to mention the fact that root was obtained with the droid within what... 2 weeks? 3 weeks? How long did the G1 take to root?

Imagine that, all those who lost root access for a higher ESE base number are now starting to realize they made a mistake. How bout that?

You know, I didn't appreciate the way things were completely before the zero tolerance policy was introduced here, but I can understand why some people would flip from time to time. It's people like this who probably never should have rooted in the first place. If I gave my honest opinion on the matter, I'd probably not be welcomed back.

Don't worry, they'll gain root on 2.1. They'll clean up someone else's mess. And they'll make newer and better ROMs. But if you didn't see that coming beforehand, then I truly hope it takes at least as long as it did the first time (was only like a month or so).

So you guys are saying that....a rooted 2.0.1 to 2.1 is just as fast and has all the features of the ota 2.1?
And if I want to I can go to a stock 2.1?
I'm interested cause you guys are saying that they probably wont root the 2.1...
hmmmm....makes me one to root rift now....!!!!

No...it's faster and there are more features. ONCE you are rooted you can have the 2.1 that was released...but a version that has been modified to keep root access (it is still ESE81). You just can't root FROM the official 2.1...you have to go back to 2.0.1 first.

On another note (not directed at the poster I quoted above...I'm just lazy and don't want to start a new post :)...I see the tension mounting...ooooohhh! lol

Look people here it is...If you want to root, flash the .sbf file and go back to 2.0.1. Then root from there. It's not hard and if you have to spend extra time re-installing you apps...so be it...and be appreciative for the work others have done to this point without getting anything from you in return.

If you don't want to go through that...don't root. Bitching and whining about people not catering to your every whim is NOT going to get 2.1 rooted any faster. In the time it takes you to complain...you could have done it by now and think of all the fun you could be having :)

The rooting community (here especially) is very helpful. But there is a strong "don't beg for handouts" kind of mentality as well.

Please remember that many of you are complaining about people (who don't work for you) not providing something that you yourself can't do...that REALLY doesn't need to be done to get you where you want to be...just doesn't seem right IMO.

If I remember right the droid's root exploit was found when 2.0.1 was released, maybe the same day. Seemed as if they revealed their exploit with that update. So maybe if they put out a 2.1.1 it will be easier to find, but it didn't seem like anyone was really close without 2.0.1. I can't say this all fact, just what I gathered from this forum. Either way I don't see any reason to wait for something that may not happen when the solution is already there.

Also, yes the 2.1 stock with root is the same as the OTA 2.1, the only exception is the root access. Same speed, files, apps, everything. I ran the OTA for almost a week, now rooted 2.1 for several days, no differences. The only difference is in the apps I run that require root access.

The exploit was actually discovered when the update was announced. lol. Google said "signed update.zip" and the devs went "wait, what? Lightbulb!!" The actual update.zip that we used to obtain root was released at 10pm est on the day the OTA started. I was within the top 5 of first people on this forum to root my phone. (a lot of people were skeptical and waiting to see what happens before following suit.)

But the thing is, the way it updated was half the battle to finding root with 2.0, so the likelihood of 2.1 being rooted the same way is virtually none. Besides, flashing back to 2.0.1 really isn't difficult OR time consuming, so the chances of devs working on another way to root when the way we have now is that easy... hmm. Probably not much of a chance.

The problem, in my eyes anyway, is with all of the apps we have floating around now. They are all designed to make life easier... which is a good thing, don't get me wrong. The problem is a lot of people are relying solely on the apps to do everything (including root) instead of learning anything at all about adb or doing things manually. Consequentially, they are completely stumped when presented with a challenge that actually requires them to do something manually. Since a lot of people have been pretty much spoon fed by these apps ever since they got the phone, they would rather whine about not having apps that can do things for them now, rather than learning to do anything manually. If they knew how to work with ADB, attaining root with 2.1 via flashing back to 2.0.1 could be done in probably about 5 minutes tops.

I guess I'm one of the only former rooters who is happy with the 2.1 update. But, then again, I knew what I was getting into (in terms of the pros and cons) and I thought about my decision long and hard before doing it.

Also, before I unrooted I KNEW I would have to flash back to 2.0.1 if I ever wanted to root again (because I figured developers would have little incentive to find a new 2.1 exploit). I accepted that before unrooting, as well. Now that I have unrooted, it is unlikely that I will root again (unless an absolutely insane ROM comes along) but if I do, I'll be using the SBF file to flash back to 2.0.1.

I think everyone in this thread is missing the notoriety that comes with rooting 2.1. Someone is working very hard right now to be "the one" who roots 2.1. Also every time someone makes rooting easier it brings more users into the fold. More users will eventually equate to more potential income to romers. Come on guys, all this stuff is good ol' fashion American capitalism. Get with the program.

By the way, I am using 2.1 very happy with it overall, I just want a black notification bar, tether and overclock. So I am patiently waiting for someone to find the exploit in 2.1.

I'll pledge on the record $10 to the winner.
