SMS Alternative Programs

You could always use something like eBuddy for instant messaging...I realize that's not an exact alternative, but it IS "quick messaging". Also, I know in Google Voice you can send sms, but I don't know if it uses data or texting (i would think texting services, which makes it not an answer for your problem).

The other answer is sending an email to text....usually it's done by sending an email to "phone number@whatevercarrier.com"

Maybe you shouldn't be texting at work.

Ummm, what the hell is the difference between a text, an IM, or an e-mail?

Duh!

And to actually answer the question unlike "some" people. I would just use an IM client. If it has to be sms I would learn how to use the e-mail to SMS gateways that all carriers provide.

For example to send an SMS to someone via e-mail on Verizon, just send the message to (10 digit number)@vzwpix.com. For Sprint it is (10 digit number)@messaging.sprintpcs.com

This is purely a cost issue for our company. We are an IT Consulting company and it would be nice to be able to use an IM alternative to chat live with coworkers regarding work related issues. I have a personal phone that I use for personal SMS. I'm looking for an alternative that can be used for official company use that won't cost the company any more money. I just don't get what the difference is to Verizon between unlimited email and sending SMS messages. They should just be free in my opinion due to the data plan.
